We were actually fairly coolish as well with 22.3C while Bega got to 26 in the end. It was horrendously windy btw but it has eased back a fair bit now. Went for a drive down to Ulladulla and there was a fair bit of low cloud around Nowra and southwards so maybe that was a slight contributor to lower temps. I'd say if I kept driving southwards the cloud would've started to clear again.

There were a few really windy spots like Foxground, while Kiama just 10 mins eariler has pretty light winds. It seems that Kiama often misses out on big winds, maybe because of Saddleback Mtn because north and south of there was very windy.

I was in Nowra most of the arvo and the wind was hectic. I noticed on WxZone there were gusts in the early 40 knots!

Recorded a 80km/h gust just after 1pm, as you say it was hectic! August like winds.

Another Augusty type day coming up. A bit warmer than an av August day, but general feel. Very untypical April that is for sure. Neg sam no doubt. But neg sam at wrong time when interior and NW still so hot. Sydney Obs Hill could do 30 today I reckon. Prob Norah head up this way too. Still crazy

Warm night here of 18.9C which only 0.1 degree off breaking the min record for April.

Certainly will be warm today Knot, I agree that there is a chance that Obs Hill will reach 30, although I think 29 is more likely. I'd go 30 for Norah though.

Btw I don't even think today will be the last 30 at Obs Hill and surrounds if it does occur. Later this week still looks well above average for the inland. I reckon ahead of the next cold front which will be about the 24th, temps will hit low 30's yet again.

Agree bout 30's not over yet WR. Not by a long shot with way more nor westers than usual. North westers, no matter time of year spell higher than av temps unless thick cloud occurs at same time. Which is the exception.

Yeah exactly Knot, NWers are usually absent at this time of the year which is why the 30's are usually over by now. But in the right setup I would almost say that every month could reach 30 in Sydney except June and July.

It is a beautiful day today, 26 and a lovely breeze. Could almost not be better than this.

These NWers have been a bane and relentless each day, just keeps fanning the fires each day(was only allowed to leave my suburb by car late yesterday). Something you would rarely see in April, hopefully we could switch back to our good old easterly flow.
Also for those hoping for a good cold winter with abundance of moisture, behold forecast for a possible marginal Negative IOD and also a good negative SAM.

Speaking of Norah. Current av min is 4 degrees above. Av max is 5.5 above. The number of 30's reached in summer and thru autumn so far sticks out like dogs cods.

Things really cookin in the P&K in WA. Be heaps of ezy 40+ their today with The wind the reverse of what we are having. With the same result. Well above temps for mid April.

Very close at Obs Hill with 29.3C, it may get higher but probably not if that high cloud moves over. I reckon 30 is about a 50/50 chance at this stage.

We are down to 25C under a thin blanket of high cloud now but it reached 27.4C before then. Still partial sunlight making it through.

I've been busy for a while so I'm just now taking a break. I see the crazy April continues, with OH just missing a 6th 30 for the month. Even in the hot January of this year OH only had six. Meanwhile, a few Sydney sites reached 30.

The greatest number of 30 degree days in April at OH might be the six in 1922, OH's hottest ever April.

It looks like the next couple of days migh be a bit cooler (i.e. average max but still warm nights) but then it's back into the high 20s. No real cool down or real rain in sight.

Very close to Obs reaching a 30. Norah almost as well. Cooranbong a dirty 30.5. And sure felt like it at Morriset today. I got it wrong about WA heat today. Good thing I not a forecaster he he.

What appears to be "after the event" analysis indicates that the fire danger over the weekend in the Sydney area was 60 (severe): Serious Fire Danger

The writer seems a little confused. The opening para says it was Sydney's worst fire danger 'in 50 years', but I think they mean in April.

The fire danger in the forecast over the last few days has been given as 'very high', although the weather reminded me of the hot, dry windy weather we often get in Spring which leads to total fire bans.

I'm no expert so won't criticise the BOM. In my memory, serious bushfires normally don't happen in Sydney and nearby districts after January. Sometimes we get problems in February. I can't remember bushfires happening around Sydney in April. Still, I've never lived in a bushfire-prone area. Maybe those who do might say differently.

However, late Summer and Autumn around Sydney and the Coast are normally humid, often wet and normally cooler. I note in passing that Bushfire-prone locations in other parts of the World like the South of France and California do have serious fires in Autumn because of a dry Summer climate.

Anyway, Sydney's South got through the latest fire emergency without serious casualties or significant property loss. Kudos go to the professional and volunteer fire fighters for their efforts.

Yes Steve i'm also suprised that there was no warning for fires given the state of things given no meaningful rainfall since February also the elevated temperatures haven't helped. But one more note is that the North- Westerlies blowing on Saturday felt weirdly cooling it wasn't those hot winds that you generally associate with bushfire days so my guard was also down. Also this the first major fire since 2009 in my neck of woods so we've gotten off light for a good period of time, I've been saying for a while now that these conditions will surmount to this just takes one crazy. Again thanks to the RFS for their great work when you've been hearing sirens and choppers from Saturday you know they've been working tirelessly. Also for the BOM for providing amazing forecasting during the fire helping predict the wind change and providing timely updates.

The run continues of no day or night, at or below av at Nobbys. Dipped just below 20.
Uptick in mid Autumn warmth again from Thursday onwards. No end to Steroidal Indian Summer (you heard it first guys. New jargon he he).
