Hey Dave, think the hurricane force warning was in early April 2008, if I remember it was a deep low that collided with an ex tropical cyclone, leading to the extreme winds that night! Sure was wild from memory smile

Yes April 2 2008 was the date, it was very dramatic to hear the term Hurricane in the forecast, I think a lot of people without the knowledge took it literally creating a bit of a panic/frenzy. Not surprising really..

Hobart got to 128km/hr.

BOM statement from April 2008

Hurricane-force winds: A very deep low pressure system passed close to Tasmania bringing with it destructive winds from late on the 2nd until early on the 3rd. Hurricane force winds have an average speed of 64 knots (118 km/h) or greater: Maatsuyker Island was averaging around 130 km/h from 1:30 am until 3:00 am on the 3rd. Individual gusts well over 100 km/h were recorded at several locations, with the highest being 176 km/h at Droughty Hill* east of Hobart. There were widespread reports of damage, particularly in Hobart's eastern shore suburbs. The atmospheric pressure at Maatsuyker Island dipped to 966.3 hPa, the lowest recorded in Tasmania since November 1994.

Hobart is presently sustained strong wind, a recent gust of 83 km/hr. Mt Wellington summit is up to 119. Maatsuyker has the states top of 122 so far. Scotts Peak 113 inland in the south-west, I usually find when it gets high there it comes on over to the south-east a couple of hours later similar intense force. BoM spokesperson says 5-9pm strongest gusts to hit.

Ec probably more realistic around 100-180mm max. Either way even if forecasts halve looks like a very good drink to come!

Large downgrade for Melbourne regarding precip totals, and Hobart is up around 90mm max over 3 days.
Will definitely be an interesting watch on what areas it falls in.

With all the models on board now, I reckon 50-100mm for most of the SE and East Coast from later tomorrow through mid/late afternoon Friday. Parts of the midlands should get a decent drink too.

A couple of cold fronts in a few days time should introduce some properly cold air before that large high settles in, should see the frost season kick off in Ernest.

EC has consistently forecast 20-30cm. So we'll go with that.

Hi all,

Very gloomy outside with moderate rain starting to push into the Southeast region, cold this morning with the temp dipping to 2.3C at home, also 0.4mm to 9am. Still cold outside with the temp just under 6C.. smirk

Hey DaveM, do you think snow will be a possibility in your neck of the woods up there in NSW? Quite an impressive system reaching from down here and moving all the way up the East coast of the country!! smile

It looks to be sitting right on top of you, when it moves a little further north the east coast will get pounded, hope not much damage, hopefully it might move up the NSW east coast to give us up here a heavy drop of rain the whole east coast up here need rain so bad, after a very hot summer.
