NSW no longer has formal drought declarations (these were done by state governments).

I'm not seeing any NSW sites with more than 60 years of data with their driest January-April on record (apart from a couple which appear to have missed reports), but lots ranking in the bottom few; of a list I was looking at yesterday, Dubbo and Orange both ranked 2nd, and Hay, Condobolin, Scone and Tamworth all in the bottom five.

I suspect they may be referring to NSW Department of Primary Industries Combined Drought Indicator which has 10.2% of the state drought indicated as in drought and 31.2% of the state showing onset drought.

Refer to map in the above link.

Thanks for that Elusive link !!!

There is a dry sandy tide mark starting to appear at Coomaditchy Lagoon) at Port Kembla. Still has a fair bit of water and I have seen it dry, but that dry was a October / November. At present rates if the season runs as normal with bugger all rain from July onwards I predict it may dry again.

Not often you see greater Syd in drought, would've thought it'd be the opposite - no drought there and drought everywhere else in the west. Recent rains have eased things here on the coast somewhat.

Every now and again (mostly in very westerly years) you can get dry conditions on the NSW coast and wet conditions west of the ranges. 1968 (Sydney's driest year of the 20th century) is a particularly striking example:

Spot on with the forecast today, 9-21C.
19C tomorrow, then a whole succession of 5 days of 5C-6C minimums and 21C maximums, pleasant enough without being too wintry.
Just looking at Perth, 12-26C tomorrow then 5 days of 11-25C.
A dead shame I don't own a house over there and can fly back and forth, and going where the weather suits my clothes.

Colder night than forecast last night, got down to 6C.
Says it is now 10.7C in Singleton, which I think is questionable, esp with the likes of Cessnock Airport now at 4.6C.
Maybe a Singo resident could say more on this?

No problemo, I've been using it for the last few months since it launched but have a brain fade as to when it launched. Quite handy link since the other drought maps were decommissioned in the years gone by.

Speaking of the dry, EC going for a paltry 0.1mm in the next 10 days for this area. It's so terrible I could cry.

Notwithstanding the fact that the rain on the weekend was enough to wet the road at 10 am on Saturday morning when I went for a house inspection up the road.

I fear springtime if this continues on when we get the clash of the air masses and resultant wind. Eep.

Or cold pools galore, with a north-west moisture or an easterly feed. Gfs (next15) is going for another blocking high. Whereas Ec has a chance of cold front activity over WA.
The next high seems to be going over Alice Springs good sign unless it is moving south.

If models hold the way they are, looking like a below average May coming up (esp after the warmer start). Below average mins and maxs forecast right throughout.

Meanwhile, 75 years ago today SE/E NSW was being smashed by a savage ECL which claimed a number of Aus solider lives in a shipwreck on Bass Point, near Wollongong:

Quote:
75 years ago today, the Cities Service Boston, a US Tanker hit a reef off the coast of Shellharbour in terrible stormy weather.

With the threat of Japanese submarines out in open water, the captain ran the ship aground on Bass Point.

Soldiers from the Australian 6th Machine Gun Battalion who were at a training camp in Dapto were called for the rescue of the tanker crew in heavy seas.

It was a dangerous rescue but all 62 US servicemen from the tanker were saved but a freak wave washed 4 Australian soldiers into the water.

Later 2 bodies were found and 2 were never seen again.

Today we remember Sergeant William F. Allen-NX 133805 (never found), Private Geoffrey M. Pitt-NX 127791, Private Raymond J. Snell-NX 118174 and Private Bruce M. Simmons-NX 111705 (never found). Lest We Forget

Looks like we *may* get a sneaky shower here in the next 1-2 hours. Damn cold though.

Plenty of shower activity just of the coast here, just might get a light shower or two.

Currently 17.6c

EddyG,you stick out into the sea the most,so any coastal showers you will get for sure, and you have been, you live in a wet area there.I have coucins who live at tea gardens and hawks nest.they used to live here in Ellalong but it was to cold for them with the frosty mornings.

Funnily enough it doesn't feel that cold here, still in shorts and t-shirts, probably because there is very little breeze atm and the humidity is quite high.

And yeah Stormy3 it can be a wet place for sure and we can pick up showery activity in a SW stream here.

I often wax lyrical about Saddleback Range to the south of Wollongong and it's rain shadow affect upon Illawarra weather.

Today is a perfect example - Saddleback Range averages from 320m ASL to 650m ASL and act's like a big scoop in these low level instability days.

You can clearly see the cloud 'piled' up before Saddleback and then after clearer skies right through to just north of Wollongong when the southerlies hit the exposed dividing range just south of Sydney.

It is 100% true ! Would like to either remove it, or make it a 3000m peak - that would interesting.

Albion Park would be a very warm place in a S/SWer if there was a 3000m peak. Already is sometimes warmer than even western Sydney in these winds.

Certainly is chilly today, I agree Kino.

6-20C, still a T-shirt on but maybe a singlet underneath now.
Not pure winter per se, not that winter here is that bad, most days 18C or just above, and less days below 17C.
Looking at a good spell of weather coming up too.
