One push on the lever handle and bingo, a stack of firewood in 10 minutes.

That would take the fun out of it Hickory...I hadn't realised how much I missed the whole process of cutting the logs up in the paddock ,splitting them, loading them on the ute and then stacking them up ready for the fire....

Ron ,We had a slow combustion stove when I was a teenager so I spent a bit of time on the chainsaw and splitter too...when I saw my son trying to use the splitter ..it got me thinking about how different his life is these days to what my upbringing was growing up around farms....bit sad to think how much time he wastes on social media.....I do try and teach him some basic skills but he see's it as me trying to exploit him for free labour.....ungrateful sod..lol..

Fluctuating between drizzle and sun today..looks like the pattern for the week ahead..

Thought the same as Pogo sorry Hickory haha, but yep I've seen a similar setup somewhere. I used to enjoy an hour or 2 on the splitter, or doing a load or ten of logs with the old man. We had 1 bay of our house shed dedicated to wood.
We also had a slow combustion stove Pogo, which had a hot water system heating up a tank in the roof running through the back of it - no power required. Also we did have an open fire, but it turned into a more economical pot belly with renovations and the old fireplace bricks turned into an outside bbq smile.

0.4mm last measure.

Looking forward to a cold blast, after a fantastic wet and not too hot wet season and now a nice sharp blast of winter, love it all

Mighty humid at times, what is ahead, nothing forecast, however some with a kind of white flowering vine/plant say its sure to rain.

Wally's weather says something for 23-25th range

Holy crap, we certainly could have done with a fireplace last night...it was down to 11.5c at the Innisfail aerodrome..not sure what the minimum was here..I was too busy battling 2 shivering Staffies that were trying to steal the blankets..

The Coral sea islands might be the place to overwinter...Willis island with 26c max and 24c minimum sounds very nice ATM..

Ha, Scott, was cold though could get worse. How come staffies don't learn to burrow? I'll share but not 90%.

Despite the chill and dry weather many plants are actually waking up, perhaps from relief from battling alternate rain and blazing sun.

Had a few spits here today already HF...

Damn Ron...mate I can happily buy a few cases of lychees from the Tablelands and do without the cold weather..

Dormant my staffy is all suited up in her hoodie now to combat the near arctic condition..it still hasn't reached 20c here yet...has your little girl experienced sub 20c weather yet..?

Looks like stationary high is going to bring showers and wind for god knows how long...I sure hope its not going to be trend for the winter..

Yep, Scott but she hasn't shivered yet. But I am, already got my woolies on after two days in a row spending 90mins nonstop waterblasting the 'orrible mold on the pavers. Nonstop because I kept expecting the machine to run out of gas so I could quit, dammit. Good machine, I guess, got brand new lately. Next the moldy, slippery black roof. The joys of high humidity.

Drastic pruned a lot of pink bauhinias to prevent so much shading of aforementioned pavers. Need to return gravel from bottom of drive to top, too, heavy rains re-organised it. Hey ho, lots of chores...

Another 22mm from yesterday.

Rained lightly most of the day with a couple of heavy showers last night. The cool change has been nice, even pulled a sheet over myself last couple of nights.

We actually had a light sprinkle yesterday, a couple times. Eniugh to settle the dust for the start of the Wheelbarrow Race.
Cloudy and cool, and a cold breeze from time to time. Currently overcast and a cool 10degrees.

Man I hate this sort of cool weather with drizzly, sh!tty rain.
Either rain or don't. I've seen it go right through to nearly Show Day in july before we get the day after day clear skies.

Same out here, just without the rain. At least the daytimes are quite cool for the moment.

Almost missed winter last year. Don't think I even put the heater on once. But a merino sweater, and ugg boots, go a long way to to being comfortable when it's cold.

May and June. Without doubt the worst time of year up here. Nice temperature but very strong winds and so many showers.

Been pretty cool up here too. Forecast keeps saying mostly sunny but apart from yesterday it has been mostly cloudy. Had 2 hours of sunshine this morning then solid cloud. Been pretty much solid cloud since I got back from Vietnam last week.
Also currently the coolest May since I have been in Mareeba and does not look likely to warm up any before the end of the month.
Not complaining though, love the cool weather while it is here. Got a roast in the oven as we speak. grin

Yeah gets bloody cold once you get to Tolga and beyond. Been hardly any wind at my place yet which is unusual. Touch wood it stays away a little longer.
The lack of sunshine is helping things stay green too which is nice. As soon as the sun comes back it will be brown within a week.

Getting some decent moisture tonight. Probably good really cause the lawn was dying off.

Well 28, if I remember correctly the members of the Nice and Cool Crew stem from Victoria,South Australia and Charters towers so even this rubbish weather is a big step up for the poor bugga's..in fact they are probably lazing around their pools today.. wink grin

Bonkers mate, totally bonkers..!..nuff said.. crazy

So much for my plans today to set up some formwork and mix up some concrete tomorrow for some paths....and haven't been fishing in ages..we tries a fortnight ago and ended up croc spotting in the river after watching some poor other bugga get stuck trying to cross the Hull River bar and pounded by waves..

Peak heat time at 2.30pm and it's a comfortable 30.9 degrees, with a very cool breeze just short of being chilly. I always welcome the change to "cooler" weather now. But as long as I can get by with a woollen jumper and uggs for a couple weeks I'm happy.

68mm over the last 24hrs between 6am and 6am.

Extremely heavy this morning around 5am. I looked at the radar and there was a small dot of light blue over Dunk. Raining like it should at least be yellow. Check the Townsville 256km and the dot is bigger and darker at least. Still not depicting the rain rate.

Perhaps it is because Mission Beach sits at the extremity of the radars reach that we dont often get a completely accurate read. I dunno!

Yes mate, both radars are equally poor for Mission beach area. It's such a hassle in my game leaving from G'vale! Sometimes just gotta take a punt..
Good rain BTW!

Spent 50 years without air-con...this might be the year that changes...at least for sleeping at night..I'm getting soft in my old age.. grin

Some heavy showers here in the wee hours..

Sf, its been many a time I've been caught out by believing what I've seen (or not seen) on the radar...as both you and Ron suggest we definitely are at the limits of the Cairns and Townsville radars...though Townsville better shows weather approaching from the SE...I hope you got your pile of dirt moved before the rain..

Ron..Feel free to ask whats happening down here if you are in 2 minds about making the trip..

Another mostly suny forecast yesterday. Sun did not come out once and we had showers and drizzle most of the day.
I wonder if there is a reason for the inaccurate forecasting as it is never this consistently wrong.

A bit nippy down here this morning too ladies..

Forecasts are predicting a chilly week ahead with the clear skies...low teens minimums forecast for us a few degrees higher for you lucky Cairns dwellers though..

Are we seeing the start of the dry season from now on..?...a quick look doesn't show any rain or even drizzle ahead for the next couple of weeks anyway..

I made a few enquires for pot belly stoves today but $1600 was about the cheapest quote..bit of a conundrum as I'm also saving for a new boat...

To have a frost the grass temp has to drop below 0 C, so the air warmed up 2.2 to whatever height your WX station or thermometer is.
You wouldn't be walking around bare footed on the grass, that's for sure.I didn't get out of bed today until the sun was nearing it's zenith. Was going to sit outside in the sun but the wind was blowing hard.

Get yourself an old split rim from a truck and an old heater base from an old tobacco farm, both made out of cast iron, all you need then is a plain old tin tray to catch any embers dropping out the bottom.

The steel tub from a front load washing machine can be pretty good too. When placed vertically the holes are in the sides and what was a solid back becomes the base. Can rest that on an old rim.

Pretty nippy out here too. Afternoons cool very quickly, nights cold, and mornings hard to get out from under the covers. I have visitors from Armidale NSW wearing shorts, tee shirts and thongs, and I have jeans, woollen jumpers and ugg boots and still feel the cold...

Easy to tell the locals from the tourists yesterday arvo on the beach. Locals, long pants and jumpers, and the tourists, swimmers and T Shirts.

However the water is still nice for a swim, no longer any nets in place.

Absolutely stunning weather. I know Scott would be shaking his head right now😂, but I enjoy the cooler weather.

Wait until the sun has a decent angle of elevation.

You sound a bit like my staffies Hickory..and when they do finally roll out of bed they spend till midday just laying in the sun..

Got your Pm..

Few more freezing nights before the showers roll in again and warm the nights up a bit by the looks of it..

I live on an old Tobacco farm, and although I'd like to think I'm not that old and such as huddling in a doona until the sun reaches my feet at this time of year, I'd be the first to plead Guilty of doin such.

We do have a few old tobacco heater stands down in the bottom's of our old drying sheds though and could probably muster up a few (three or four at least) for those who feel that paying through the nose for a simple heating source that will die quite soon after purchase is a waste of time.

I'd prefer to drop them off at Biboorah or Mareeba at the cost of a warm second hand blanket for our Dog's for winter if anyone is interested in them.

We just lost a good 12 years old Blue Cattle Bitch through Tetanus of all things today, chose to put her down after two weeks of fighting infection and blood loss through excising a wound in her chest we don't know how she got.

All that aside ,one of these stands and a decent wheel rim will beat anything that you can find at Bunnings or elsewhere, you could even plonk one of those stainless washing or dryer tubs on top like C@28 reckons? and get a better result than the $200 dollar Chimenias or whatever they call them clay things from Bunnings.

None of these things are good for indoor's though, Balconies and stuff are good if you have somehting underneath to catch ashes and embers and stuff but they don't suit indoors at all, even the bunning's ones cant be used indoors.

I've bought (under pressure from the Missus two types of the bunnings ones and both are now broken artifacts)the commercial ones, and for the fourth year in a row for the State of Origin will be using the old Stand plate and tire rim, the same old one.

There really is no need to spend a fortune on those (sorry to say ) Crappy [censored] third class expensive heat sources that locally available second hand and locally available materials that will last at least a decade can provide. I have a plenty of it available here and I'm sure others have too.

Sorry Ranting again, but I hate those clay rip off things from bunnings.

Just Pm Me :), I'm not really that scary.

Worst part of your post, Marakai, is your dog. All of us that keep dogs will be affected by your news - going too early from unexpected and painful to pet and ourselves illness is horrible. Was in same boat last June.
Feel for you, dear.

Too cold even to have arms out to hold the phone. grin

So sorry about your dog marakai.

Sorry for the lose of your dog Marakai.

3.8c here this morning to finish off this string of very cold nights though I think single digits for tonight and possibly tomorrow night are still likely here.

Definitely a really early start to the cold nights C@28. My coldest month for night time temps has been August for the past 3 winters so not looking forward to this August. Would love these kind of day times all year though.

August is not a nice month anywhere I reckon. September is always my favourite: in the tropics there's a return to humidity in the air, and in southern climes it's *starting* to feel a little bit warmer.

Reckon that this is our coldest year for a while, already - last year I don't think we dropped below 11 degrees around town.

I don't mind a bit of "cold" as long as it doesn't last for too long. Any as long as it doesn't get windy. grin

About 40 years ago, I had a real Eiderdown with feathers from the Eider duck. You can still get them, but I believe they are about $1000.
Takes a lot of Eider ducks to make one, and I read somewhere the greenies and do-gooders are the cause of the price hike with all their bleating.

A fair bit of action in Tully today around midday...search parties and the chopper buzzing around on the mountain..a few people wondering why she wasn't reported missing till yesterday, despite the fact that her belongings lay around untouched for days..wondering if she could survive a week with temps down to 9-10c...wondering why she would even climb the mountain by herself..but a great result in the end..she is the longest lost Ive heard of the backpackers and locals getting lost on Mt Tyson...the next longest I know of was a girl up there for 4 days..

Last night was lovely. Warm enough I didn't have to pretend to be a polar bear with all the rugging up. Cool enough I only needed the thin blanky to keep me more than warm enough.

I like this weather.

19mm and still drizzling.

Fishing looks good through to about Thursday. A mate went out Tuesday last week and it was rough as guts through the shipping channel but they got onto a golden patch and cleaned up.

Its pretty slow here this time of year Hickory...works out perfect as its also a good time of year for fishing when the weather allows and it gives us a break and lets us catch up on stuff before things get hectic again come springtime..

What was your mate catching SF and were they fishing the gravel patchs around the shipping channel..?..

I had plans to flick some lures this morning, but the drizzle dampened my enthusiasm😢.

Spent a week on the Coast north of the Starcke last week, the forecast was for it to drop off by 10 kn's by the middle of the week, it blew it's arse off harder than ever right about then and the water temp plummeted.
Still picked up a couple of nice Barra and Jack before that, but it all went to (Geeze I need to Squeeze one out) right about when BOM forecast the improvement in both the wind and water temp.
We had our ever trusty 55% home brew Vodka to console us and nature provided the fresh coconut juice for the Pina Colada's so not all was lost though and we struggled on through the last few days of being creek bound in the boat.

BTW have also found a REAL sandly/Midgie proof Mozzie net if anyone is interested, makes for a beautiful nights sleep in such places and you dont even have to spray $10 buck's worth of Bushman's on yourself before retiring for the night to keep the little buggers off you all night.

Loving it. Cool nights and over the last 10 days or so some incredible days on the water. Very un winterlike, windless days. Whales have already turned up. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts

Looks like its going to turn to crap again by the weekend Brett..

Sure was good on the water this week though...we got out on Tuesday and decided to head out again yesterday...it was probably the best ever return trip from the reef last evening ...nearly the whole way in was just perfectly flat and often glassy..not even an inshore afternoon breeze to chop the water up..didn't see a single whale though..

Hope you got to enjoy the outdoors Slipperyfish...this week has been about as good as it gets weatherwise..

Hey Marakai...you need to head a bit further north to around Bathurst head/Bathurst bay..the shape of the coast helps create a bit of a lee around some of the headlands there and you can can even sneak out around the Flinders islands if you are keen..still gets blowy though..

and whats the sandfly net..?..I bought an oztrail tent because it was supposed to have finer sandfly mesh...I can testify they can still get through ..there is nothing worse when you are trying to sleep..

Stunning weather Scott. Just got home from a hiking trip down to the Hull River mouth. Had a nice cuppa atop Tam Oshanter. Views were a million bucks, so blessed to live in paradise. Long walk though and Lugger Bay looked so good for a swim I just had to do it😁. Kept a good look out for the resident big lizard however.

Time to kick back and enjoy the arvo.

At 00:15 hrs it's still 20.6. A far more pleasant evening than the 13 crap.
It looks like Sat and Sun the cold pool of air comes through S.E Oz, then maybe two or three days later will be up our way.
Sure hope the forecast is wrong.

Yeah I'm dreading this coming cold snap too hickory..forecast is not so bad for you Cairns dudes but we might have some sub 10c temps down here...brrrr..

SF..there are some other nice spots around here to check out....my boy has been out and about over the last year..some of the hikes/places he has visited are Bicton Hill, Laceys Ck, Aligators nest, Nyleta Ck, Murray falls, Kirrama range road to Blencoe falls..if you are keen Mt Tyson on a clear day is supposedly great and the Thorsburn trail if you are really adventurous.....also on the dead low winter tides you can walk out to King reef.. we were planning on checking it out this past week but fishing got in the way..

Been to most of those Scott. Blencoe is beautiful.

Went flicking lures for an hour or so this morning just down the southern end in and around the rocks near Lovers Beach. Nice 68cm barra for my effort. Threw it back, no more room left in the Kelvinator.

Conditions have been absolutely magic.

Temperatures are expected to drop this weekend in Queensland's south before dipping below freezing early next week.

The Bureau of Meteorology said cool, dry air coming from south of Tasmania was predicted to make the mercury drop in the Sunshine State and cause widespread frost.

The BoM are still backing this in, so maybe it's going to happen.
All indications on the charts are very certain of it. Flanny shirt has been on since late April, now the trackie dacks and maybe a shawl too. laugh

This has been the coolest June so far. Average Min currently 8.3c and max 24.7c. Bugger all wind too which has been amazing. Perfect days.
Usually I get an average 2 nights in June with mins below 10c. This month 13 times so far and with more to come.

This would have to be my favourite winter in FNQ. I hope it stays like this till September. grin

That feels set to change 28...

There is a definite chill coming down the hill this evening..

Strange though that WZ has minimum for Cairns this week at 14-15c but down here 8-9c...that's a big difference..

A fella I know in Cardwell said he measured down to 6c just one street back from the water during the last cold snap..

The winter solstice is this Thursday..its always good to get that over with..at least increasing day length is something to look forward to..

I dunno, if you look at the weather maps, we are right at the cornerpoint of 3 different districts - we have no weather.....and most weather events seem to stop before they get here, no matter which direction they come from. grin

We heard a few people say that it got down to 5 deg at Cardwell during that last cold period,we were down there that morning and can attest to the fact it was bloody freezing!
You could feel your ears starting to ache it was that cold.

She's dry tonight - 15%RH

Was somewhere near 20 this morning, already down to 20 now. Been down Mission for a couple of weeks now on and off,S Johnstone or thereabouts always seems to be coolest. Although had a day in Atherton last week, it was cold, but lucky no wind that day.

You're right about daylength Pogo, can't wait to be driving in daylight laugh

Dammit I wish I had a bottle of nice Port on hand to fortify my belly tonight...

There is a serious chill factor coming down the hill here already.. 8c forecast for South Johnstone in the morning..

Hey YS are you heading down to Cardwell sightseeing again in the morning..you never know, you may even see some coastal frost this time.... eek

Whats worse Ron..? leaving in the dark and getting home in the dark or having to work last week while watching all the boats heading to ramp on those perfect weather days...

Very mild here. Been close to perfect really.

Currently still 26 degrees, and the humidity made it down to 17% this afternoon, which I would rather not experience too much of.

Cannot find a single speck of cloud in the brilliant blue sky.

27.4 outside, 25% humidity, and a cool breeze.
The house is still a nippy 23 inside.

My tin shack stays cool for hours, but once it warms up it takes forever to cool down. Nice in the Dry Season, not quite so pleasant when it's been 38 degrees.

There are fires multiplying in the Featherbeds to the nor-north east of Almaden. Thankfully the smoke's not blowing this way, at the moment, not so good a couple days ago.

Yeah. I figured I had misinterpreted the racecourse reading for the airport. Certainly felt well under 10deg this morning at the base of the hills on the south side. Almost thought about putting a jumper on. Didn't do it but It was an option

I saw few photo's of frost at various locations on the tablelands including Mareeba..I wonder how Simmo got on...?..he likes it "nice and cool" so I'm sure a bit of ice underfoot would be quite a treat..I bet the goats were not real happy though.. wink grin

Hey YS, do you guys have an indoor or outdoor fire...?

No jumper needed Brett...Wow..!

Lololol. you guys.

I'm considering a snuggie, the pup has chewed holes in my plaid wool blankets, maybe way to rescue the parts. Good thing they were only a couple dollars at the opshop, good nick too, lots more in storage though.

Am so over this cold weather.

Nah Scott, was the old outside bonfire, complete with roast veggies and a cup o' tea heated by the fire.

This year has been much colder than last, i wore a jumper only once last year, and this year i have had one on nearly everyday!

I'm attempting to break the record for cycling from Innisfail to Cairns tomorrow morning, looks like I'll be getting wet, but as long as there's a half decent tailwind I don't mind!

We've been in Tully since 2pm yesterday and it's been raining/drizzling almost constantly.

Nothing of course out here - but a bit of weird (for this time of year) cloud around.
Last year we got 4 continuous days of the very lightest unseasonal rain, and same in the previous year. So it could happen again. I have visitors who have a rooftop tent.

Yep I'm in full agreement Dormant.. everything has had a good water and it would be nice to see a bit of sun as the ground around here will just turn to slush .

The synoptic charts show that we are likely however to be influenced by the highs and the associated showers and Sou'Easters for the next week or 2..

I expect that this time of year but generally hope that there is 2 or 3 days break between Highs every week or 10 days but it doesn't look likely ..just totally sucky weather all round....but at least its not freezing cold I guess...

The forcasts look like a week of drizzly weather. Cowley looks no different.

More places to grab a coffee in Mission, if that sways the argument.

It did actually try to rain, sort of, late yesterday afternoon, and produced probably the absolute best full rainbow yet.

Fires in the Featherbeds near Almaden, and closer, have dropped the occasional bit of sooty bits of what must have been grass before it burned...

Overcast since Saturday, very cool evenings.

I was in Townsville but yeah Mareeba had frost, I recorded a low of 2.7c. A mate about 5kms away went down to -0.8c. He had a lot of frost. crazy
Funny thing is goats love this weather. They play, fight, run and just generally have fun all day. During summer all they do is lay down and only get up to eat or hide from the rain. grin

WooHoo!! First rain recorded in 4 1/2 weeks. 0.6mm frown

I hope GFS and CMC hold true for Mareeba. Over the next 10 days GFS is 35mm and CMC 50mm. EC, who will probably be right, is saying just 4mm. frown

June will be the third month in a row of below average rainfall at Bilyana (3 month total is 182.5mm below average), however the huge falls in March more than make up for this.

Glad you're so chirpy dormant..I'm sure you would be happy frolicking in the fields at Mareeba with Simmo's happy goats.... wink.. .every step I take at the moment feels like stepping in sloppy dog crap...I don't want to work outside and the weather is way to crap to go fishing...

I think once the last child leaves home after this year we may look at holidaying somewhere dryer at this time of year...the plants look after themselves with this weather..they don't need me at the moment..

Ha, Scott, can't help it, my slavedriver is away for awhile so.. no schedule, no rules and no chores until it stops raining and I can patch the roof. You're getting a lot more drizzle than I am, not mired in mud here.

Cavorting with goats sounds fun, Diane Cilento offered me a couple long years ago but we hadn't built enough house to live in, let alone look after pets.

Are we the only ones getting this rubbish weather...?..been averaging around 20 mm a day of drizzle and showers for the past week or so...below average for last month but about as wet underfoot as I have ever seen it..on top of it, we have these incessant Sou-easter's... its bloody miserable..

Simmo, can I come up and cavort with your goats please..?..I'm even happy to sleep in the barn with them as long as its dry.. crazy grin

Dormant, it was a good decision to not take the bugga's ..they need super good fencing or tethers, otherwise your garden and your neighbours would be toast..!..

Pretty crappy weather up here too, Scott. Only a 3mm in the gauge today and 7.8mm over the monthly average last month. Bring on the Cairns show so we can see some dry season weather!!

Lol, Scott, woke up and looked on radar and thought, Gee where did this blob come from? Yet another creeping south, sure hope it doesn't reverse and return as they're sometimes wont to do.

Got a little laundry hanging inside for two days as wet as ever and think maybe it should be outside getting renewed rinses or it might turn mouldy.

Bought a chunk of jap pumpkin for the seeds, washed em in sieve, left on counter to ahem, dry and they've all sprouted. Do the two of us need 50 pumpkin vines? Are they even submariners?

Yeah but the weather we had a couple of weeks ago wasn't cold. Cool mornings for sure but gorgeous days. That's the best weather NQ can put on. I am with you now though. This s#$t SUCKS!!!!!!!! I have said it before and will say it again. Late autumn and early winter up here produce the worst weather.

Haha slippery , I was just telling my father that I expect this sh#t to hang around till the Cairns show...
He road up from NSW on his BMW 850GS , got here Last Tuesday arvo and it has not stopped with the drizzle since, then yesterday it set in and down it came.
Hope this clearing we are getting holds for a day or so so he can get out the driveway Wednesday with out falling off, it's a bit slippery for road tires, lol .

Yeah Scott it's funny how at this time of year small amounts of rain consistently seem to make a bigger mess than 200mm over night. Can hardly walk around up here the place is just slop..

Cheers

Hi weather watchers ,

While us on the south side of Thorntons Peak only got around 80 to 90mm on Sunday night the rain was a bit heavier on the Northern side with over 120mm reported.
Local photographer Dean Jewel captured a shot of a new landslide on the Mountain.
Amazing that this did not happen in the wet but only after a good night of steady rain, will see lots of runoff this wet I would expect.

Please credit Dean Jewel if reposting.

Cheers

Thanks for that, Bunyip. Nature is strange, no rhyme nor reason except rain. Just like the slips on the road to Cairns a short while ago, slips I've never seen before in over 30 years of driving that weekly.

I could understand the slips on the Cairns road , I actually drove home that afternoon was one of the last cars coming north, had to 4x4 up over slips as they were coming down in the torrential rain, Port had over 600mm that day I believe, so totally expected.

I've read that Coopers Creek is flowing red , I wonder how long that will be like that. Maybe the council can put up some shade cloth to stop the run off and save the reef.

Cheers

Lol, yep, just like the requirement for rockslides/slips to be trucked away instead of dropped over the edge of the highway.

And I thought it was clearing today but got in line with a strip of showers so didn't see the sun - I keep hoping.

We were certainly happy on this side of the hill to see some sunshine also Dean..

Nice photo Bunyip...that's a doozy of a slip..My thoughts were similar to yours Ron..I wonder if that march rain started a bit of subsidence..?

I was also waiting for an update on your dad Bunyip...poor old bugga...that's not a great way to start off a long journey...

Wow, it almost looks like we might get some fishing weather on Friday/Saturday..

Interesting that Dean Jewell's photo of the Thornton Peak slide has been picked up by several news services - I hope it gives him a professional boost.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, still drizzling...

After posting the above, I belatedly googled Dean(I don't get around much) and found his website with some fine wildlife photography with commentary. I learn more about this place all the time...

He made Greenvale yesterday arvo , and is stiff and sore with a bit of bruising around his right rib's but in good spirits about it.. He is heading to Moree to soak in the thermal pools for a few days before the final leg home to the blue mountains.

Not sure about the fishing weather up here , but am hanging out to get back out ...

So nice to hang the washing out in the sun smile

Well yeah Hickory..I'm a pretty ordinary fisherman and the missus certainly loves her fish...done a couple of 6 hungry person fish dinner meals this week and a couple of lunchs as well so its surprising how fast it goes, particularly when the freezer had been bare for some time.....

Hey Bunyip ..glad he is ok..all part of the adventure...that sounds like a great road trip...he will want to avoid heading into Moree late in the evening or early morning...we have had 2 trips down that back road from Charters towers to Moree this year and around an hour north of the border around Garah it was absolute Roo carnage..at one stage we gave up counting after about 20 fresh dead roos in about the same 20 km stretch every trip past there..its a well known Roo haunt but it was just madness....early morning and evening it was like playing dodge the roo and many were very large animals..

and you know the deal..its always 5-10 knots windier up your way this time of year unfortunately ..10 knot forecast for Townsville..15 knots for Cairns.....I guess we will see..I got some Quells for the wwoofers just in case..

Scott just drove to Lightning Ridge today, one section of the road near Dirranbandi was like doing that exercise where you have to weave around the witches hats except it was dead Roos and it went for kilometres

Some days it's like that from here to Mutchilba, thankfully not too often.

Sadly yesterday saw the carcas as of a beautiful big wedge tailed eagle I'd seen when driving in on Thursday. He was beside his road-kill. They don't like leaving it at all.

Saw a black pig too, but that's no loss.

Yeah guys..I never like to see dead critters on the roads, regardless of whether they are regarded as pests...the boy thinks I'm a nutter because I just lay on the horn well in advance, whenever we see raptors eating roadkill and beeping at cassowaries when they are teaching their chicks how to get a free roadkill meal..I'm also at odds with local cassowary warriors on this as they recommend stopping on the main road to let them feed and cross....I feel this is encouraging a death sentence for them and the chicks..

Yesterday was a lovely half-day out on the water out at the bait grounds..about 10-12 knots..a bit choppy but not much swell..we got half a dozen Doggie mackeral as well as a bit of fun jigging Trevally and Mack Tuna in with them..but it was very quiet for the Spanish and spotty's..hopefully they will turn up in the next couple of weeks...though the rest of this week is a washout...

One of the wwoofers who caught a Bludger trevally, wanted to take it home to eat...said it was delicious cooked with butter, onion and garlic....normally throwbacks for most people but it seems the French are easily pleased ..I wont be defrosting Trout or Sweetlip anytime soon if that is the case.. wink grin

Agree Scott12, Cassowary's need scaring away from roads, not encouragement to stay on them, any interaction between Cassowary's and high speed vehicles is only going to end up badly for the birds.
I also do the same with road feeding Raptors, we get a heap of road kill feeders on our 75Km round trip into school each morning out here and I lean on the horn even if it's just the Crows having a chomp on the fresh Wallaby squashed by a truck, It's not only them I care about but a decent sized Raptor can make a mess of a windscreen as well.
Weather wise, we have had a decent 30 MM Plus up here over the last week, drizzly grey sky's daytime with overnight intermittent heavy showers. Got down to 8 C overnight last night with a current 12C at the moment and dropping due to a clear sky and lack of wind right now.

Lucky to get out Scott, I probably could of got an early couple of hours in but it was work days for the misses and she gets pissed if I go without her, lol

Yep Cassowary needs lots of horn banging on doors ect ect , to learn NOT to hang around roads.
I almost ended up in a punch up with one dickhead bus driver , after I blasted the air horns while he was letting tourist out to photograph one, He was blocking the road, idiot tourists all over the place not looking around at traffic , imagine if it was a passenger run over how his CV would read, duty of care ect ect.. Same with any that come into our yard, bang and crash stuff and tell them to stay in the forest Away from people..

As for weather , the sun is nice after the rain last week , but this wind can go away please , I've been trying to weld bull rail fencing the last few days and think I'll have to go and buy welding rods if it doesn't stop soon, as the mig is just hopeless in this much wind..Years since I welded with a stick ...

Cheers

All mine fell off last year. Got a few started this year, but not holding my breath.

My lemon tree amazed me, removed about 100 tiny lemons last year, thought I left about 5 but there ended up being about 30. Looks like another big crop again now, but will have to thin them out again somewhat as the branches still aren't strong enough.

Perfect weather up here at the moment and looking likely to stay that way for a little while. Bugger all wind too.

My mangoes are flowering like crazy. Might be as good as last year again. Avocado has its first fruit on, lychees flowering for the first time too and ice cream bean tree looks like it will be covered in flowers soon. Most of the trees in the orchard have been in nearly 3 years so expecting all of them to flower, hopefully!!
I think that 4 week stint of really cold nights has helped too.

That's nice to hear Trav..Any size to them..?...last year was pretty ordinary for the Spotties up here and the weather was also ordinary....I'm looking forward to a bit of Spottie mayhem of some double and triple Spottie hook-ups in the next few weeks.....it looks like the High Pressure Systems are losing a bit of intensity so maybe the Tradewinds will drop off a bit..?

No Spotties about today ..just the usual suspects but at least the Doggies are pretty nice straight out of the ocean .. was about 10-12 other boats where we were ..and about 10 knots again today..

And yeah Bunyip ...not so lucky to get out..the missus pretty tells me go if the weather lets me..lol..either she is sick of me or maybe she has a boyfriend on the side..lol...who knows what goes on in the mind of a menopausal woman..spending 24 hrs a day with each other can be a bit wearing at times..fishing is a good bit of alone time for us both..

A Cassowary father and its son were killed in separate accidents on the Mourilyan road last week..I just don't get whats the hurry..!..Do you get them up where you are Marakai or are you a bit to far west...?

Just above 60cm mate, got about 3 on Sunday with a few small doggies thrown in the mix until the Hammerheads came in.

Got a 150cm Barracuda on Saturday though! That thing was not coming in the tinny haha!

Hopefully another cold snap and then some lighter winds for a while!

A pro fisherman mate just uses a cane knife and a bit of 10" x 2" hardwood and lops the heads off at sea. Very little waste on Macs.

(The beer to accompany it goes without saying.)

Hopefully this next cold spell will see the winds drop out and give us some of that spectacular FNQ weather.

Yep the old mackies sure are easy to fillet bone and skin..easier still if you first chill them well to firm up the flesh...

The sharks sure do get annoying Trav...we were hassled by a few Bronzies and Black tips last trip..and big Bull sharks make it near impossible to land Spanish at 40 Foot Rock off Dunk Island..

Havent had beer batter for ages Hickory..I would turn into a fatso...just rolled in some crumb in one and pan fried here with a squeeze of lemon..

Its getting a bit gusty down this way today but yesterday was perfect...had the boat all hooked up the night before but the flu beat me...

I'm wondering if we get a cloudless evening for the eclipse.

Very quiet on here...hopefully everyone is out enjoying this run of amazing weather..we could use an inch or 2 of rain but apart from that no complaints...El Nino looking ominous though..

To be getting 2-3 days a week of small boat fishing weather this time of year is also amazing..I have never seen such constant congestion at the Mission Beach ramp ever before..on a couple of occasions last week we sat on the water for up to nearly an hour waiting in line to retrieve the boat..

We watched a 15m Humpback breach more than 10 times today a couple of hundred metres away before he cruised past less than 50 metres from our boat...what a magic time of year it is..!the missus was complaining how hot and still it was out there today..obs say 28c max which is about as hot as its been this winter down here so far I'd say..

Low 30s for the last week or so.

Added my second doona to the doona cover a few weeks ago, but it's been way too hot. Back to one doona since last night, and way more comfortable.

Yesterday at 2pm my car said it was 38 degrees. It was probably about 34 I guess, and my car temp not to be relied upon.

Couldn't ask for better weather really.

Looking back to 2010 it was warm like this in August. I'd just moved to Chillagoe and was living in an unlined shed in the middle of town. Thinking I'd have to find somewhere else, when someone turned up on my doorstep and offered me a lined airconditioned shed...

I think we had our winter for a couple weeks in early May, and for a week maybe in June? But that's usual for here.

Grey clouds to the north and west, blue with high puffy clouds to the east and south - half an hour ago. Now it's full cloud cover, with dark grey to the west. Not expecting it to produce anything. Nothing showing nearby on the radar.

Nice weather, seems a bit humid at times then just goes back to the normal. Sometimes quite warm when going to sleep but then quite fresh on the wake up

And I've been lamenting the fact that we've had yet another sunny day. Dunno why it won't let up...

meteye has Gvale forecast to hit 30c next Fri/Sat, seems quite early but at the same time it does feel like that sort of weather. Enjoying the cool mornings.

There were a few drops yesterday, but wasn't measurable.

Regularly in the low 30s this last couple weeks. I'm not sure I saw winter. It was even warm for the festival, unusual.
