Move 100km up the road then...you’d triple your rainfall instantly. Can’t blame the weather for your poor local geography.

We have the opposite, we have no real "dry" season, usually Sept,Oct are it, then the rains return.

my suggestion, if you really are a journo from the Mackay Mercury, don't use Higgins or Brisbane Weather as sources. try contacting weatherzone for comment if you wanting to speak to real forecasters and meteorologists.

considering that our rain in the so called wet season comes from east and north east flows, the local rain shadow effect means little.
cant remember the last time we had a decent NE stream off the coral sea. so this isn't about geography, it is about the weather.

all models agreeing with a massive area of low pressure forming over SE Australia, firstly upper system and then at the surface, will be the first injecting of cooler, drier air into the tropics. Already seeing min temps next week dropping in the mid teens on our forecast.

Has to be geography Mick, you only have to look at the vegetation once you travel south past Ingham, right thru to Bowen, it's dry, as soon as you get to the whitsunday area it's very green again, Townsville is a beautiful city, but meterogically speaking it ain't great
And here in Mackay we r not that much better, too far south for consistent wet seasons and too far north for decent thunderstorms, however we get good se stream showers

talking about wet seasonal weather. yes tsv is in the dry tropics, the rain shadow only stops the weather from the SE and ESE. as mentioned, we havent had a decent NE flow for years, this is where we get our wet season rainfall from. this is weather, not geography.

As expected the dry air moved in around 11:00pm last night. Should be the coldest morning of the year so far tomorrow.

^^It's Townsville Field Training Area, specifically Fanning River Station. There are coordinates on the page that you can put into Maps to see exactly where it is - 19.7829°S 146.5005°E

Gawd its boring in here at the moment. Light misty rain this morning. So light it didn't even register in my Nylex.

Knee is healing. Too slowly for me as I'm itching to get driving again but I have to wait for another week or two yet.

Last winter Townsville only had 3 days that dipped (just) below 10.0C, and we've already had 3 in a row in the first 4 days of June. I hope that bodes well for a nice cool winter.

great stuff, jewel in our crown locally would be Magnetic Island, you can either take passenger ferry or go over on vehicle ferry if you plan on staying a few days. Plenty of places to stay over there, but large chunk of the island is national park, so be careful with the dog if you take it.
Day trip wise, Billabong Sanctuary is pretty good, you have to go up Castle Hill and walk Jezzine Barracks and The Strand. Reef HQ and the Museum of Tropical Qld are also worthwhile if you are interested in that sort of thing too.

Gday guys. Over this bloody cold weather....however I have a question, we are in El Nino watch but the outlook in the ENSO wrap up doesn't reflect this. Am I reading this incorrect? Pretty much all models show a remain of neutral.

Finally some "sanity" returning to local temperatures. Townsville minimum 13.9 today. All official mins. in Herbert and Lower Burdekin above 10 even Woolshed and the inland defence stations!

The forecasts don't seem to stack up do they? Whenever there is a setup like this with a north westerly flow the models (and by extension the BOM forecast) seem to overcook the rainfall.

Still Bom claims El Nino watch yet outlooks don't support this...please someone explain why there is a El Nino watch when only one model is showing El Nino in the outlook graph. Am I missing something somewhere.

"The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) remains neutral—neither El Niño nor La Niña. However, warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean and recent model outlooks suggest an increased likelihood of El Niño developing during the Australian spring. As a result, the Bureau's ENSO Outlook is at El Niño WATCH, meaning there is roughly a 50% chance of El Niño developing later in the year (double the climatological average)"

Bored into numbness by this weather.
Roll on the Wet.

I sincerely hope we get a large Gulf Cyclone that heads south and brings a shed load of rain to the middle of Queensland and NSW to break this drought.

I read that but going off the outlooks, it shows remaining neutral, no indication of El Nino...all models minus 1 are within neutral phases.

Yeah its shaping up to be another dud of a wet season. Man we need a cyclone like a red headed child needs a friend.

My predictions for the up coming Wet;
1 Rainfall 200 to 250mm
2 No cyclones within a bulls roar of us.
3 We will have Level 3 water restrictions mid Feb 2019
4 I will be 100% wrong.

Yes, extremely dry. Between 0730 and 1130 today we experienced a drop in DP of 28.3C (+18.1 to -10.2). Townsville is one of DP extremes. In summer we regularly have DPs in the mid 20's and higher. In winter dry nonsense like this. I do recall seeing a -18 DP sometime in the 80's.

just the 1mm in downtown kirwan, would have taken that 4mm though, the 20mm on northern beaches would have been even better.

Does anyone know of any good webcams to view in Townsville? I can't seem to find any decent ones (or working ones for that matter) that give a good view of the city or suburbs.
