Does the forecast for Rocky/Cap Coast/Emerald come from Brisbane now.. because it seems to never be as accurate as it was a few years back. Night temps in cooler months up here for example, forecast has changed to 18 deg tonight here but still had 20's every night before.

Is there no human input anymore?

Another example is saying Yeppoon has a 90 percent chance of rainfall in the wetter months and yet not one place in the region was wet. Some days it has been sunny . If it says 90 percent chance of showers in Yeppoon under Yeppoon I expect something but when nothing falls at all not even a drop it seems like they have got it all wrong.

I know forecasting isn't precise and is subject to error but a few years ago it seemed more accurate if that make sense?

I know that the rainfall forecasts from Rockhampton have been grosely overstated in the last decade or so.

If the forecast rainfall is 10mm I usually estimate we will get 1/4 or 25% of whats stated by the BOM. Seems to work out pretty well on most occasions.

Ok so looking ahead looks like some sort of shower activity on Monday and then next Saturday more winter like night temps, SW wind 13 deg night for Yeppoon predicted , will see what happens .

Good day for the lagoon to open, above average temp of 27 deg today.

Yeah gonna be 12 deg... hard to believe as it is still quite warm at nights. Still feels like April .

From memory May last year wasn't cold or cool at all.

What did fall seemed to be the usual these days of just south of Gladstone , all the way down the coast.

Bizarre how that persistent barrier is there this year. Then it ends around south of Mackay.

The south westerlies weren't string enough to keep the seabreeze coming in yesterday i imagine, today is a different story though I think.

Humidity in the teens, nice dry clear day.
Minimum of 10.4c at my house this morning.

Currently 9.3c

I'm not sure how the BoM figure we would've only dropped off to 10c tonight as today was 4c cooler max temp wise and even lower humidity compared to yesterday.

I'll estimate a minimum here of 7.3c wink

They're going for 15 tonight so I'll say 12.

If we're getting temps like this now at night and it's not even winter yet I wonder what winter is going to be like.

My guess, it is going to be cooler than last years.

When will it rain next in Rocky?
Anyone care to speculate?

My guess is we will get a storm, with about 8-10mm towards late November.

Dry, dusty and freezing.

If you wear a coat, out of the wind you get hot, in the wind you get cold. I always hated winter.

0.7 deg at my house this morning, the lawn is completely frosted. We're about to go into a fairly big water shortage on our block. Sunwater have cut our allocation back to 10%. So dry it's not even funny.

Bleeding heck. Herd a loud noise outside and had to go look. Did see a plane but then saw the flash of blue to the north west. More loud noise.

Yes, there is a storm. Might get lucky and get a drop or 2 if I am lucky. Pity it can't all go west where it is so desperately needed.

Another 20 deg night in Yeppoon, warmer than Cairns lol.

Looks like some sort of rain/storm is about to pass over us.

Just a 30 sec heavy shower this morning around 6am.

Perth has had more rain this year than Yeppoon , that's something you don't see often.

Last year felt like the first year in a while we had more storms .. this year it just seems too dry, though we did get a rumble the other day with that showery event.

The last six years or more the weather has been quite erattic Vinnie.

I would say we are in a long term dryer period at the moment. Long term as in many many years long.

Or for all we know we could be returning to normal years from a long term wet period. There are no long term records going back thousands or years.

31 deg in Rocky 25 in Yeppoon but most of the day around 22-23deg.

Livio's outlook doesn't seem so pessimistic compared to the BOM outlook:

Some heavy falls last night. Very very isolated though. 75mm+ at byfield.

A narrow heavy shower at Gavial/Gracemere road today at the highway roadworks.

In saying that, I am slightly concerned about the forecast maps, they seem to be following a similar pattern to last year.

During the past week, or so, we have scored 2 good showers. One with 32ml then the other night woke to the sound of rain. Scored another 4ml out of that.

The grass is looking greener though I am sure it won't last long but better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick.

Starting to think a drought is nearly upon us in this part of the world as well.

I would have hoped to have seen storms in the south east corner by now.

We can not expect too much yet as it is still September, but I can remember three years in a row we never got a break until January.

From memory, didn't last year we see more storms around October and November and it was wetter ?

Rocky has only had 300mm , instead of 600 year to date.

Yes, last year spring was what I would consider more normal, then summer was a bit of a flop.

Two previous years, spring was a failure but there were large deluges in summer.

An older person thought in his opinion the seasons have lost a bit of consistency. Long dry spells and short deluges is the order of the day at the moment.

It was certainly unexpected but very welcome especially as I had mulch sitting here ready to put out. All tanks are back to nearly full although the dams are all still low.

Looks like the action tonight is more inland.

Storms in the west the past few days. Looks like a normal build up to the season.

Is the dry weather beyond us now, and we have returned to a normal situation? While it is still dry, that is normal for this time of year although should become wet within a few weeks.

Some people got some good rain out of those storms yesterday. We got 7 ml of steady rain so my garden is looking a lot less sad than it was a few weeks back. Grass is greening again.

I just really wish I could give my rain to those who are desperate for anything

Looks like forecasts are sticking with quite a substantial rain event for coastal Queensland from Gladstone south starting arounf Friday. It stubbornly seems to be refusing to move north.

What a weird night. Coming home late and watching the road for roos I see a little half grown one in the middle of my lane. He aint budging. So I wonder if he is ok and pull over to the shoulder of the road. He is still there. I open door, get out and he is still right there. Bent down and touched him and he bounded into life. Straight across the road towards the scrub.

Then he does a u turn and bounds right back to the car and slams his head into the front wheel which is still stationary. Then he bounds around to the other side of the car and bangs into it. Then back across the road, and back again to run into the car for the third time. I did try to catch him as I am sure he had got a knock to the head by a car before I got there.

I ended up managing to herd him up the paddock bit after a few tries with him continuing to go up the paddock a bit then back to the road and hope he just stayed there to recover before he got cleaned up on the road.

Not sure hubby believes my story. He is sure I am setting him up for damage I did to the car but it really is the truth. Isn't the truth stranger than fiction.

Hoping that we all get a bit of the forecast rain this weekend.

I thought the cool nights had gone but last night was quite chilly. just under 14 deg. Well below average..

Would be great if the region could get 50-100mm evenly spread between Emerald to Rocky to Yeppoon. There is no rain in the forecast here predicted for the next week.

Looks like the stuff inland of Byfield could make it to the coast? the cell north of Rocky is slowing disappearing.

As expected the models are pushing the heavy rain to fall further and further south with each run.

Interesting update to the forecast at 621pm

Yeppoon Forecast

Forecast updated at 6:21 pm EST on Tuesday 9 October 2018.

Forecast for the rest of Tuesday

Shower or storm likely.Chance of any rain: 70%

Rockhampton:

Chance of any rain: 80%

---

That's the problem with storm season, might be days of storms but has to be the right conditions to get one here, seems like we get maybe 1 or 2 storms a year if that !. Isolated being the key word.

Looks like the northern side is fading fast. Not enough instability yet for decent storms.

13mm here.

Unfortunately forecasts have really moved the heavier general rain for Friday much further south. Now down to coastal south Burnett region.

About 2mm last night, not much ...

Higgins says Storms this afternoon could rip roofs off, bring trees and powerlines down while dumping giant hail up to tennis balls which will wreck your car.

I guess they have to make it sound worse than normal to get people to read their posts on Facebook...

Bundy's best single rainfall total for quite sometime to. Most areas in its line got around 20mm or so. I am currently watching that cell they re-issued a STW for around 200 k's west. Satellite shows it is exploding as it tracks east.

I ain't liking that at all. I do not like big yellow and red blobs heading my way. I am wondering if there is room under the bed for me and my dog. Don't think they worry her too much, just me wanting the company.

What does an El Nino mean for CQ considering it is usually dry at this time of year anyway? Does it mean a delay in the wet season ?

I have been busy stocking up under my bed with rum. grin I really don't like this daily attack on my nervous system. I much prefer gentler things in nature like steady drizzling rain to violent storms.

Yea hail I would say as well. Moving quite fast though so no massive falls in it. The northern edge is rapidly disintegrating.

Hope all in the path of these scary storms stay safe.

Just checked Boms observations and Blackwater is showing some crazy wind gusts of up to 145km/hr at 6.23pm??? Thought maybe it was just a typo and it was meant to me 45, but the knots were over 70. Could this be right? Has anyone heard of bad storms out there?

Heaps of tree damage here but thankfully we missed the tennis ball sized hail that occurred near Gin Gin. 79mm from that cell.

Powerlines have a tree leaning on them and ergon are aware.

The winds were incredible BB.

Here is the radar sequence for those storms yesterday for anyone interested. The cell that hit here was born nth west of Miles around 1.30-2.00 pm and hit here at 8.00pm. Quite a journey around 310 k's.

Tansey near Gympie copped it the worst. Houses totally ruined. I spoke to someone out at Booyal this morning and she said one of the staff only has two dry rooms his house from hail damage. He also had a work vehicle that had the windows shattered and large hail dents. He lives just south of Gin Gin.

Nothing initiating out west where it'd need to for it to hit us, even the light stuff is both north and south. A proper downpour wouldn't be too much to ask, would it?

Some heavy falls last night from Gladstone south and inland as well.

Much as was predicted.

Radar shows all clear at the moment, yet forecasts still say up to 50mm for Rockhampton area.

It hinges on the development of the possible Low near the Sunshine Coast.

Yeppoon's forecast says a 90% chance of a shower or two and a possible storm?

I am doing well at storms just passing us. We are getting more than enough rain to keep us happy, our needs are little. Gardens are looking so much better. Tanks are full, dams are not.

I would willingly give it all to the drought affected if I could.

Can hear rumbles here.

Apart from the downpour this morning we had a couple of light sprinkles just before midnight the last couple of nights.

It's not much but better than nothing.

Just light showers and a little bit of wind here with rumbles to what sounds like the west. Will Yeppoon get any storm ?

Looks like it is heading to Pacific Heights and north of Yeppoon.

Can't believe 2 months ago it was really chilly at night and now a switch has gone on and it's changed.

Rain and showers has been on and off all day here. Picking up a bit now .

And lightning too but not much thunder.

I wonder why it's not going north of Yeppoon. Only south . Very selective. Lucky I'm not north.

You would not believe it if you saw it.

Seems nearly everywhere in CQ and the Burnett got a decent drop except Gladstone to Rockhampton.

It's not even officially registering in the Yeppoon Esplanade gauge because it is just fractionally too far south .

How exposed to rainfall is the Yeppoon gauge do you know Vinnie as only recording 22.4mm seems a bit low. Or, it goes to show just how isolated the falls can be. South of Yeppoon fared much better than Yeppoon itself. 11km south at Kinka Beach I recorded 124mm. How about you, about 1km north of me?

Plants have grown and the rain gauge needs to be moved out to the open. Yes 1km north give or take.. I think i need to move it , trees blocking the flow.Prob more like 80.

Very tropical at the moment like nothern australia has moved south for the past few days, mosquitoes, high humidity, geckos, birds swooping, flies seem to be multiplying, plants growing fast , jellyfish etc and 38 deg already inland.

Feels like we've jumped ahead to December/January?

Just over 30 degs here. It looks like areas around Longreach were the hottest in the state. Certainly not late October weather. I look forward to the south easterlies tomorrow night into Monday.

I was only one at our beach in July must have been 22deg in the sea. Once you get in it was fine just felt a fraction cool but it was just right.

I dunno if it's the humidity on the coast or the angle of the sun now that makes it feel intense without a strong breeze . Rocky's heat feels drier every time I have been there at times throughout the year but the sun doesn't seem to feel like it's as strong? I dunno how to explain it. Perhaps the humidity and breeze reduction intensifies it on the coast.

They say it's going to be drier over summer but I think if this sort of buildup? keeps on going we might see an ex cyclone or some sort of big rain event in the next few months.

Did not really get a massive rain event last summer in Yeppoon. Was just a month or so where it rained a couple of times in moderate amounts but not enough to flood anything. I don't remember if Rocky got flooding last summer or whether rains in summer were sporadic or moderate.

Happy to have those storms to the north. Peaceful sleep for tonight, I hope. Although a few drops to refill the tank would be nice. Came home from a day at the beach this week to hear the house pump running flat out. Pipe that runs between pump and house had split sending a great gush of water out. Garden liked it, me not so much.

An interesting hypothesis, but I am not too sure. The amount of energy in a storn is huge compared to the tiny amount of heat Stanwell would put out.

Well they didn't. surprise surprise. grin

Some good falls inland though.

Some isolated places have done very well with rain over the past three days. But as we are for all intents and purposes in an El Nino lack of widespread rain features is par for the course.

Since this is coming in from the coast I would say the Berserker ranges would be blocking it from getting to Rockhampton.

Iím happy we got a little bit this morning but itís hard to watch the wall of heavy rainfall thatís been sitting stationary just 5 km north of Gladstone for the last 3 hours. And then more heavy stuff just to our south. Canít win.

Good stuff bundybear, I would really like to know what has caused the 20km wide ďriverĒ of no rain between these two rain systems. Check the radar and you will know what I am talking about. It has looked the same for the last 8 hours. My uneducated guess would be dry air being funneled somewhat between the middle of all this convergence. Targinnie and around Mt Larcom(the peak not township) must have scored between 100-150mm today.

Gladstone power station. grin

I just put it down to an on shore flow. In the past you get under one of them and you can end up with big falls.

You see the remnants of another one on the radar just north or Mt Larcom, then there was another one earlier in the day around Yeppoon.

It is really weird how those dry spots appear. Left home today in the constant rain for the shop. No rain when I got there and not soaking wet. Usually runs the other way here. Shop is on a different side of the hill to us.

Son is in Rocky this week for a course, camped in his swag with a tarp to keep him dry if need be. He is hoping he hasn't taken the rain with him.

Does not look like much joy for this region. Forecasts are still predicting all the rain events will be mostly south and or inland.

This must be four or five years now of erratic rainfall events.

Need a volcano or something to erupt to get the atmosphere out of this groove it is stuck in.

Some great falls in the Callide Valley region. 50 to 90mm are figures I have heard for those lucky enough to be under a storm.

Also 90mm at Riley's crossing east of Emerald.

A paltry 6.5mm for me. The storms, like the day before never got over the coastal ranges, just not enough oomph in them, and I suspect the stagnant weather situation we have of constant easterly wind all day every day is not helping.

YTD for us is 344mm.

Rained lots around Moura. So much so they called work a non event for hubby so he was home about 2am.

We got 12ml last night from nowhere. That will save me starting the pump for the garden for a bit.

Yeah looking dry for Yeppoon too which is good.

Not sure what Rocky has been like but although it has been kind of dry today it has felt like oven winds today having said that it only got to 30 inside and we havent had the air con on.

12mm from last night's storm around 5pm for about 20mins.

Also a seabreeze began around 11ish this morning but died off and now back to inland breezes and up to 34 but 22 percent humidity.

So how come the winds are from the inland today but the humidity is back? Shouldn't winds from inland be dry? The only other similar day to this is Wednesday i think coming up.. is it to do with the positioning of a trough (guessing ??)

I would not mind a severe storm here to cool things down.

Do not get days like today in November very often, and a full week of it is very uncommon in November.

Bundybear believes she is probably homeless as of this afternoon.

I packed the important stuff into the car this morning when ash started drifting into my yard. Then when I figured it was a good idea to leave I did. Not long after that they gave the get everyone out call.

There is going to be a lot of hurt round the place. Those without council approved homes will not have insurance and will lose the lot. There will be stock losses.

I am lucky. Fully insured and alive and so are my loved ones including the dog.

Be nice if the house that I raised my children in, gave birth to the son even, spent so many loved filled years in stands. If not there is nothing I can do. Posessions can be replaced. I have lots of pics in the cloud. I will be sad to lose things that do matter to me but am grateful I have a loving family who offer me shelter and a wonderful husband who will rush to me if need be.

Thank you. I am rather amazed at the amount of people who have contacted me one way or another to offer a bed, just to check we are safe. Then those who have contacted my kids to check on me.

Gives me warm fuzzy feelings. smile

That is such a kind offer. I am sure we will be fine. I am lucky that my kids are actually both very happy to have me stay with them so I will spread myself and dog between them so neither get a chance to get sick of me. grin Hubby is coming home today so I am not alone in this.

As of this morning I am losing it. Pretty peed off.

The only information we can get is 'There is a fire burning in the area. Get out. Stay out. Houses may or may not be lost in the area" Sounds like they are planning the equivelant of gender reveal party for after it only a 'You still have a house" reveal party.

Whilst we locals can't be given any information AT ALL pics taken by the firies can be posted on other brigades pages half a state away.

We're somewhat lucky in that we're a few hundred metres from the sea so somewhat are spared too much of the heat...

Having said that the humidity today is not nice. I'm constantly buying those cupboard dehumidifier containers from the cheap shop 600ml ones and in 3 weeks or so they are full of water !

First our Daikin aircon worked but only one room the vent wasn't working (not a major issue from what I researched)

Now we tried to test it the first time since March, yesterday and the thing even though the touchpad is ok , putting it on does nothing to the compressor outside...

Have fans on 3 and luckily we have plants all around the house. Is 28 in the house.

Also last night was 18.7 deg BELOW average odd eh .

38.5 deg yep broken the November 1995 record in Yeppoon... humidity in the last hour dropped from 76 to about 36 percent which is a bit of a relief.

Got to 39.5 deg humidity dropped a little to 30 percent (still humid in my opinion ) and now the with has gone NE but the damn humidity is back again at Darwin levels .

Ducted aircon not working either... luckily our home has plants around it and we have fans .

According to the BOM with the lower humidity and winds it actually feels 4deg cooler in Rocky !

41.8 in Yeppoon , damn didn't think it was going that high. Never experienced this temp in Yeppoon before. Maybe at worst a couple of 35/36's a year

Humidity down again which is good.

at 3.30pm Rockhampton weather station
42.5C
9% humidity
wind gusts of up to 85km/hr recorded earlier this afternoon.

Atrocious weather conditions for bushfires

From what i've read, first time Catastrophic rating has ever been used in QLD?

Until today the Catastrophic fire rating was never used in Queensland. Other states of Australia have had similar conditions before and history has shown how devastating they have been

(I grew up in the Melbourne / Macedon Ranges area in Victoria)

Queenslanders are not used to this type of extreme weather

Edit: moved to Brisbane during 1997
I have never seen 9% humidity before in Queensland for any area from any weather station. Near Ipswich (Brisbane) the humidity has been down to 18%

at 4pm for Rockhampton weather station
42.3C
8% humidity
wind gusts of 69km/hr with stronger gusts to 85km/hr earlier today

comparing with Bundaberg weather station
29.3C
76% humidity
wind gusts 37km/hr (up to 67km/hr earlier today)

Summary: the extreme dry near Rockhampton is driving catastrophic bushfires. the humidity is exceptionally low - meaning there is no moisture in the air. this is the worst case scenario during bushfires

Edit: Wide Bay ABC radio is broadcasting from Bundaberg on 855KHz AM radio. Rockhampton ABC radio frequency is 837KHz AM radio.

listen to local radio for continual information about the bushfire situation

There are so many bushfire alerts for Queensland it is somewhat difficult to keep up with. Several areas in the Capricornia are affected and there is a "Watch and Act" for a fire in the Gold Coast area

Woke up this morning and the air in Yeppoon feels different, a lot dryer. I mean in Rocky it was dry but here it was more humid and today has gone down a lot , with the SW winds.

Not particularly unusual to get single digit humidity way out west in the channel country, I've seen it on meteye a few times recently. Near the coast is another matter of course, the last few days is the sort of weather that creates the horrific fires down south and I didn't think we would experience it up here.

Breeze has stoked up fires again at Kabra/Stanwell and the caves.

Like how accurate is that latest outlook from the BOM ... it almost reads like we aren't going to see much rain over the next few months ?

What sort of rainfall do you think Rocky / Yeppoon can get if we have El Nino does that mean necessarily dryer than average Jan-March?

Didnít know which thread to post in as I see we have another one. The Dry season thread still seems appropriate lol. Wow what a horrible last couple of days and looks like another 5 days at least of heatwave conditions. Was 36c last night at 9pm! Last few runs of GFS look tasty for our area in the long term but will have to wait and see I guess. For those still in fire affected areas stay safe and listen to authorities advice.

I have seen below 10% humidity here in Rocky at least once or twice every couple of years since I started observing over the past ten years or so. Definitely more of an occurrence during our driest months. Not to mention how often it gets below that out west.

Yesterday was a new experience for me definitely. I surely felt like I was living in NSW/Vic with how strong those winds were, and the fire conditions coupled with it. 44.4c in Rocky.
The unusual feeling of excitement inside you when even the worst of situations can unfold. I hope not to offend anyone. Just part of being a weather freak I guess..

And I still can't go home. Absolutely no information coming from the local officials about the fire. Still getting it though from unofficial ones though. I honestly feel like someone is planning a surprise party badly except in this case it is a bushfire. I really feel for the people who don't have any idea what is going on within the area. Not everyone is as prosaic as me and the elderly are probably nearly hospital cases by now with the stress of wondering if they have or haven't got a home.

Oh, jeez, bundybear, horrible being on pins - as you say the elderly (me) would be in agony.
