One moth and one earwig added to the rain gauge - otherwise, nothing to report.

Some strange noise outside, on the roof, begad - it's a "light" rain shower.

Nearly finished by the time the post is typed.

Got those same strange noises Samboz a bit later in the night. Amounted to 0.5mm. Another trace mid day today. Low cloud, humid. No wind.

Way things are going (and looking at forecast) will be not much more than 5mm for the month.

Nothing registered from last night and dry all day in Stratty.

It's pretty tough on the farmers.

Yes ... looking likely driest April on record for Bairnsdale.

Some paddocks around here, any grass still there can be kicked out of the ground ... all dead. A bit better in some gullies and river flats.

The BoM seasonal outlook had this area April - June as better than 50% chance of above median rainfall each month. Not workin' so far.

We had cold, stormy weather conditions which gave us a welcome 20mm of rain between April 14th and April 17th. But aside from that, and also for a few weak cold fronts and low pressure troughs which brought some brief cool spells on April 20th, 22nd, 25th-27th and 29th (we had light rain showers on 24th/25th and 28th/29th), it was simply a continuation of the boring, useless dry spell that's been hanging around since the end of January!

I will admit the warm sunshine felt great, and the nights were pleasant for sleeping. But overall I was fed up with the Indian Summer; the incessant lack of decent rainfall, strong wind and storm activity were really beyond a joke. And the burn-off smoke was disgusting and making me feel sick! mad

We had heavy morning fog on Saturday April 22nd, which persisted until about 10am. The afternoon was warm and sunny.

The 30.7C maximum on April 23rd was my latest ever 30C+ maximum, beating the 30.0C high registered on April 19th 2017. And it was seven months after my earliest ever 30C+ maximum when we hit 31.6C on September 23rd 2017. smile

And as for the 21.1C low on April 24th, it's my second-warmest April night ever. The highest is 21.3C on April 2nd 2014. It's not my latest-ever 20C+ minimum though; that record belongs to April 28th 2016 when the nighttime temperature dropped to only 20.3C.

And as for the first 8 days of May 2018...

I've been too busy over the past few days to take down my usual daily observations, but the lowest and highest temperature readings were 8.1C and 27.4C respectively, both registered on Tuesday May 1st.

As for rainfall, we've collected 13.7mm in total so far.

From memory we obtained 8.5mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday May 4th as a strong cold front raced through; the rain was quite heavy that night! Very windy conditions with increasing high cloud during the day beforehand, with plenty of smoke hanging over the Yarra Valley while I was returning from shopping in Ringwood with my fiancee.

An additional 2.1mm fell as a result of shower and storm activity during the wintry cold outbreak on Friday May 4th. I was down in Cranbourne with my fiancee, where we encountered some very stormy weather on the South Gipplsand Highway around 3pm. Beforehand and not long afterwards it was sunny, but for about 5-10 minutes it was very dark as a possible thunderstorm swept over, bringing squally gales and heavy rain! Can't confirm if we had thunder or lightning though. crazy

The worst of the weather cleared before sunset, although a few light showers returned during the night and early hours of Saturday May 5th. More locally heavy showers and maybe the odd thunderstorm hit the Dandenong Ranges, dropping another 1mm of rain in a hurry. My fiancee and I were in the City though, where it was mostly sunny! smile

And a weakening cold front swept through early yesterday morning, dropping 2.1mm of rain. On Monday the front was preceded by high cloud which produced a magnificent sunrise, followed by a blustery, overcast, chilly day.

Otherwise, for the most part it was a delightful first 8-day period for May 2018. The sunshine was much more greatly appreciated thanks to the recent rainfall, and instead of stubborn high pressure and choking smoke haze we've had bursts of windy, stormy weather! smile
