Prob time for a thread given it's only the first decent weather event we've had in months (for coastal NSW other than Port Stephens area).

Band of showers and embedded storms approaching Illawarra, Sydney and Central Coasts now.

Cloud thickening here and a chill in the air. Still no rain coming from the SE yet but some definite storm cells off Wollongong and the northern suburbs.

Seems Kiama --> Wollongong is again in the divergent zone between the flow to the north which is wrapping to the NW/N and the southern flow wrapping to the SW smirk so frustrating.

There seems to have been steady light rain here since mid morning - it's a bit hard to tell - I've been mostly indoors. It's much what people think of as Winter - chilly, grey dome skies, temperature stuck on 14.

Sydney OH has had 5.0 mm since 9:00 after 2.8 overnight. There's been a bit less here and almost none in Sydney's West, although that massive blob passing over Sydney's South should produce some good totals, even allowing for the Terrey Hills radar's over-reporting.

There seems to be a little squall line coming ashore, rare to see from the SE. Could be some flash flooding around the city and surrounds.

Campbelltown sitting under a heavy rain train, they sure need it.

The Red Cell which also hit black just SE of Port Hacking just looks like it moving ashore fingers crossed it impacts my area sadly I will be away from home. Although tomorrow certainly looks exciting as we get a genuine Easterly wind.

Absolutely torrential in Moore Park, can't say rain rates are really that over read by the TH radar.

That rain band's arrived here. No thunder or lightning but the heaviest I've seen for a while.

EDIT: rain rates in the band don't seem huge. Sydney OH, in its direct path, has picked up 3.6 mm in about 15-20 minutes. But there's more to come.

It's eased off here.

Starting to look good for some action more than 2km inland. That big blob just missed us to the south which is a shame but it does give me hope for the stuff that's coming onshore as I type. Looks juicy.

It was reallybbucketing diwn when I was out a little while ago while a red core was passing over. Back to steady, light rain now.

This event has delivered good falls to Eastern Sydney, but 'spillover' Westwards hasn't been great. So falls of 15-20 near the coast, 5-9 in the middle ring and little or nothing the the outer Western suburbs.

Basically coastal.

P.S. There's a yellow blob passing South of Cessnock right now - hopefully something for Stormy and Gringos.

A bit of a storm and heavy rain about an hour ago here. There was also intermittent lightning from the M1 up near Bulli all the way home.

PS I love the sweet sound of rain while going to sleep. It has been months since this luxury was last available.

2.5mm overnight, 3mm overnight yesterday. Disappointing and basically useless considering the requirements around here. Its just drought rain. All coastal running into the ocean.

You can see in Steves map above where the light blue runs closest to the coast. You can guess where the bushrangers are!

Good to see it paid a little more for you RS. Need to X 10 for anything in the dams though.

Yeah, even my 19mm is nothing really, as the ground is so dry it barely gets to soak in, what we all need is 100 to 200mm of steady soaking rain over a few days.

Here's hoping we all get some of that soon.

Plenty of thunder now to my ne with that large cell pushing in. Hopefully we see some substantial falls as ne’erlies are good for us.

Very solid 30mm here - putting that in perspective is 18% of what we’ve had for the last 6 months.

Gringos, Stormy - sorry to hear the rain missed you. That yellow blob approaching last night looked good. Hopefully you'll do better today - the showers seem to be coming from the East.

-----

Sydney did well last night, especially the area around Botany Bay which finished with 50+ mm. I noticed a briefly black core pass over the La Perouse peninsula late last night - hail?

Sydney OH finished with 32.6 mm, nearby Chatswood 23, Bankstown 24. At OH, with a max of 15.1, it was the coldest day since July 12 last year.

----

There's been no rain here since I got up. The Sun's been trying to break through for the last hour or so. However, there's a lightning-active storm off the Northern Illawarra and more storms out to sea, so hopefully there's more to come.

On the North Shore, this morning has been cool and partly cloudy, with a couple of light showers and lengthy sunny breaks. There are showers about but they're mostly missing us, passing to the South, although her's a light shower falling just now.

The water is flowing over the Lane Cove Weir for the first time in a while, probably since March. Riverside Falls are flowing, just a little bit now, but they'll build up if the additional forecast rain arrives.

Here is Sydney around 10:45AM from this webcam

Gee that next line is looking tasty - should slap the whole coast from Sydney to Kiama if it holds (this is where the Escarpment really helps us in e/ne flows - it makes the lines "stand up" and briefly intensifies them allowing heavy rain and lightning).

Looks like natures chiming in for vivid Steve. Yeah jimi that red cell moved right over here at work. Looked impressive incoming as blue sky preceded, nice cold air explosive cumulus with dark as night bases. Very heavy for 10 mins. One thunder roll heard on approach. More more more

1-4 pm looks like the peak of activity as the Li index reaches to its highest point. Also in other good news winds in my area have switched easterly. Hopefully I will be home for some storm activity.
Just looks like I've finally had my autumn break recorded 25.4mm from this event.

Some solid cores appearing in this lot, probably a good idea to put out a storm warning.

What a relief this must be for SW Syd, in line for more

Fair point - flash flooding major risk as ground is so dry - also you'd think land slips a possibility along escarpment, especially with that cell pushing ashore near Helensburgh right now.

At home. Bit of rumbling - about to get pounded again.

Big heavy raindrops that look like it will splash a plant and all the soil out of its pot.

The reverse is actually true - long term dry causes the ground to compact and not absorb water, causing it to run off.

Dark as night here - amazing cloud height. Moderate rain but there'd be some heavy falls around.

The Davis at my mothers place in Wyoming recorded a rain rate of 174mm/h around 2pm today, so if you can get under the red cores the rates are big!

I must've just missed the red cores today, guesstimating 70-80mm/h at the heaviest. Handful of rumbles too

Speaking of red cores, the last time I remember so many coming off the ocean would be during the April '15 event - they just keep coming. Best the Hunter can hope for is the stuff on the MNC/North coast coming down around the high.

Missed them here to with 33mm/h being the top rain rate today, in fact I've not recorded anything above 60mm/h for the entire event. So while the totals are handy it certainly hasn't been torrential.

That rain band has cleared Sydney's North, moving away to the SW. The satellite picture is showing clear sky on its way. As Sidney says, it looks like it's finished.

I had some distant rumbles, plus a flash and a louder peal, around 4:30PM, but apart from that it's been steady light to moderate rain since around lunch time. Sydney East of about Parramatta had 10-20 mm since 9:00, Western Sydney around 3 - 9. Chatswood has had 15. Not a huge amount but useful.

Meanwhile looks like we will be in the drink for a while yet here. Some pretty modest totals in the teens for the Illawarra. Probably not drought breaking but good anyway.

Very pleased with this event really didn't expect much from it, I managed a handy 37.8mm (best rainfall since June last year) from this event which is quite reasonable considering I live 20km from the coast.

Looking very aesthetic at 3pm haven't seen this type of cloud arrangement since January.

Bit surprised how quickly the rain and storms just disintegrated as the night went on, would've thought the opposite. Anyway, good falls where needed, Hunter missing out on significant stuff is a shame but some follow up on the way for inland and coast. Maybe some of the moisture from this N half of the coast stuff can get absorbed into the next system.

Rainfall totals today didn't really get near forecast totals, but with some of yesterdays exceeding totals, it all came out about 50/50.
I didn't get that much here during the period of the event, but a nice hour long period of prolonged steady rain this afternoon was nice. The cooler temps have been lovely too. It's been beautiful having the fire going and listening to rain on the roof.

Currently 20.2 deg's inside, and 11.5 outside.

BTW, I went outside during half time in the STATE OF ORIGIN and was surprised to see a very thick fog so early in the evening. It is even thicker now. I was outside before the game and all I could see was stars and clear skies, so the fog definitely formed very quickly.
I was quite surprised.

Same here, we basically never get fog yet it's everywhere. First time this year.

Yeh. First really big fog for us this year here as well.
Normally there'd have been a dozen or so like this already during Autumn.
Just goes to show how the lack of rainfall has affected the whole clime lately.
Just looking at the latest obs for the Sydney metro - nearly all locations are in the high 90's for humidity percentages.

Several decent storms Randwick-Clovelly area yesterday. Best at midday when 25mm in about half hr. Another at 4.30 produced about 18mm in similar time. Quite loud thunder directly overhead and some street flooding due to blocked drains. Total of 50mm at Randwick to 9am but noticed WU PWS Bronte got 58mm. The event produced 117mm at Randwick, best 3 day fall for 2 years.

10mm here since June 4, 8mm in Singo, haven't checked Cessnock.
More of a low level rut weather here, than a genuine rain event per se, although we did get quite a bit before the 4th June which was very pleasing.
Proper showers look like coming back on the Saturday of the June Long weekend. (which will also be the 11th Anniversary of the June 2007 Pasha Bulker Superstorm)

Chatswood in my locality finished with 41 mm over 5 days, including 38 mm in the 48 hours to 9:00 today. Normally no big deal in Sydney, but this year it is.

Here's how NSW finished the week to 9:00 this morning:

So, basically a coastal event, with little or nothing West of the Divide. Good falls (25+ mm) were pretty much restricted to a coastal strip 20-40 km wide, almost from border to border. Heavy falls (100+) were confined to a narrow strip from about Norah Head to Port Macquarie.

There may be further falls in the next few days. Sydney's forecast has 1 to 16 mm over the next 5 days. Not so much a feast or famine as a snack or famine.

Just shy of 50mm here, which is 40% of what we’ve received this year. Sadly, still 440mm below average. Will take some catching, but still possible. Great start after the dryness.

Some light rain overnight, although only 1.4mm recorded until 9am at Maitland Airport.
Looks more likely to get more rain today, although only <1mm forecast for the day from showers.

Last night's rain was targeted mostly Southwards, with falls of 7-12 mm South of Sydney Harbour, about 3-8 Northwards, with less on the Central Coast and the Hunter - just 1 or 2 mm. The Central Tablelands did well with a number if 10+ falls including 12.8 at Orange.

---

It's solid overcast this morning with light rain falling. June so far in Sydney has been gloomy, cool and wet. Stats for OH for June 1-8:

Temperature range 11.4 - 17.4, +1.6 to -0.6 compared to 1981-2010 averages. Today's max won't change that much if at all.

Total rainfall 63 mm, a bit over half the average for the whole month. Rain has fallen on 7/9 days, counting today (0.6mm so far).

It's been pretty cloudy, with only about 2.5 hours sunshine per day (assuming little or none yesterday), about 25% of the possible amount.

So in round one up until Wednesday evening 6/6/18 we got 23.5mm, in round two up until now, 11:30am 9/6/18 we received another 11mm, so all up so far 34.5mm, with a small band of rain approaching over the mountains now.

My guess is we will end up with a total of around 36mm for this event if it stops today. Of cause we still need a lot more, and I mean a LOT more to make up for the deficit we have had over the last 11 months.

Sun's out now for the first time in about 48 hours, with blue sky about. It's still raining lightly but it looks like it will stop for a while.

But as Rainbow S says, there's another rain band on the way, currently over the Blue Mountains.
