Evening all,

Models have shown this week period of weather for awhile
Now, so I thought Id get this thread up and running 😃

Looks like a sustained period of frontal/trough systems to push
Through over the next 7-8 days!
Progressively gets colder and colder by next weekend,
With max temps pretty low from Friday/ Sunday period.
Plenty of showers possible hail and alpine snow, with potentially
Lower level snow by the weekend!

Hopefully as the systems get stronger by weeks end,
They can deliver some much needed rain to our friends
Out east and north vic 👍

Plenty of weather to talk though over the coming week
So go for it everyone 😃

Great to see most of North Vic get something and most in the 8-15mm mark with higher falls in hills,
After tomorrow nights front, wont see much in the N rest of week NW.

NE looking great for isol 100mm for the week and widespread 20-40mm.

South and Mount Vic also going to have a wet week, SW Vic and NE Vic will do best this week.

Wet, cold windy winterish week with a cold to almost very cold burst Fri-Sunday.

Im going to enjoy the sun tomorrow

The second low pressure system for this thread seems to have enhanced a bit, useful rain for much of Vic (except Gippsland) and very snowy from NW backing to SW over a couple of days smile GFS:

Oops - failed to report a calm sunny 16C day here, baro backed off by 9 to 1015 hPa past 24hr. No sign of the looming change evident here yet in westerly sky, but betting on a short twilight for Vic this evening.

Winter thunderstorms firing up in West at 8.25pm, this second repeat night lighting storms this winter is very unreal...as we had lighting strikes thunderstorm last May 29th 2018..

Satellite shows clear sky clearing from the W, prob. reliable enough for outdoor activity re rain, wind OK - 11 to 9 kph between 10am and 1pm.

1.25mm - keeping the lawn green.

Surprised to get a mild 18C here today, opened the doors and windows to warm the house!

Baro had sunk to 1001 hPa during day, bounced up to 1002 so a shower or two might be expected to add to our meagre tally for this event tonight?

This sequence of events looks more interesting for us in Gippsland if this tight little cut-off (from an earlier/larger cut-off) comes to play per GFS:

Glad it will rain somewhere Ruckle, nice to get that report.

Our patch and further East stands to continue the dry spell until Sunday from what I can see.

The nice wet / cold fronts parting and going off to the N & S of us with regularity.

A strong N/W trough or a wet ECL close in would be handy !!

Q. "Is there such a thing as a wet ECL for E Vic any more, they seem scarce these days?"

Sunday night has the hallmarks of being a significant memorable severe winter storm for SE Vic if GFS can be believed!

If it comes to play, its unusual for me, to see a low pressure system drift from the bight SE'ward to below Tassie, travel due east, then head due N all the way to offshore Sydney!

Latest GFS run tracks low system E when it gets up near Gabo I, so less rain/storm impact for SE Vic/S NSW if that's how the system plays out.

Mild windy 16.5C here today.

Good luck all Vic's with the thick storm band entering the SW of the State right now!

Fresh grin morning here, lot of blue sky, breezy with 1.75mm o/night.

Max f/cast 13C for three days.

Had a look at the ACCESS Vic map for 3days(3hrly pics) and 7 days(6 hourly), for 0400hrs tomorrow the rain model is different enough to be quite a contrast if you were making decisions based on it.

How does that work ?

That 7 day BOM product is a combination of AccessR (3 day but with higher resolution) and AccessG (7 day lower resolution) models I think Samboz.

We got 3mm overnight with that front - best rain for ages.

Footy will be interesting today with all this wind!

Showers have started to steam up into Maffra area past 6 hrs or so, nearing 5mm in gauge since I poured out the 3mm yest. morning. Best rain in months.

We got 17mm or so out of a band in the eastern side around 10-11am this morning, can't be more exact as was trying to cook with kids, to add to the 20mm we got between around 10pm and 9am. Great going given I was expecting 10mm or so total out of the event.

Snow bunnies will be backflipping.

Hee hee, funny watching from a warm lounge room!

Wind getting more west in it over the last hour or so, didn't expect that. Might be a trough of sorts extending NW from the low or another centre forming?

We've had a constant stream of rain coming up from the south up our way. 8mm of rain so far and the stream of rain is still progressing directly north over us - odd, but looking like it's maybe finally running out of puff. With the rain we've had for the month plus todays means we'll break the average.

2000, didn't even see it P cool

In Maffra for ride 1000hrs, forecast rain - that happened, wind forecast
22-24kph from WSW, almost calm, just didn't arrive which made conditions much more bearable.

Look at Bairnsdale with just on 30mm, TB will be celebrating and rightly so, lovely drop for them!

4mm here for the event around an hour ago, the odd shower since then.

Poured out 9.5mm just now, takes Maffra to 13mm over past 3 days (16.5mm for the month so far).

Looks like a 30 minute stream shower might arrive here soon - hope so!

(Samboz - looks like we've knocked you Sale mob off with this system).

Very little breeze at all here today, one of the multiple low centres must have been nearby?

"That 7 day BOM product is a combination of AccessR (3 day but with higher resolution) and AccessG (7 day lower resolution) models I think Samboz."

Thanks P.

Yes re Maffra V Sale, some quite good showers in Maffra and a heavy one as I headed home round 1320hrs. Certainly need it over there, looks much drier than Sale.

ps...TB's still in the pub celebrating..lol - outright winner that area.

Yeah, just staggered in from the pub ... if only!

Bairnsdale AWS has 35mm so far - quite amazing. Much of that was before we had anything significant here. Since around dusk we've had heavy and sometimes torrential showers. (Some as heavy as I can remember in a long time).

Don't know how much we've had here (got one of those gauges you actually have to go and look at) but I don't think we're near 35mm.

Will report in the morning.

This is the heaviest rain in a long time!

Thought our chances had finished 3 hrs ago TB - but just copped another light shower ....thought that the lee of Tassie would finish things here, but over past 30 mins, showers seems to be able to spring up from nowhere! - now 2 1/2 inches up on Baw Baw!

Hopefully you will report a 20+mm total tomorrow!

....and keep out of that Pub - else we will all be talking about you! smile

Celebrating a big rainfall total seems like it's worth a trip to the pub.

One of the long-standing traditions of the Bureau's climate section is that anyone who gets 100mm in a day at the gauge closest to them (or their own gauge if they have one) has to bring in a cake. Haven't yet had the chance to put to the test whether 200 means two cakes (there was a near-miss when someone who lives in the Dandenongs got 196 in the February 2011 event).

Reminds me of trips home from Loy Yang over the years - but it wasnt a cake shop that we called into!

It's been raining here all day on and off. Very heavy at times and still chucking it down as we speak.

My rain gauge is not the most reliable and only ever under estimates. Since midnight it is showing just over 32mm and it's still raining.

Not bad for Tarneit! Loving it.

Yes. Superb figures.

We got 32.5mm here which is fantastic!

Bairnsdale AWS must, I think, have got a very heavy downpour earlier yesterday which set its total up.

Still have light to moderate showers here adding a few more mm.

This has changed the situation here but will it be too cold now for any growth?

Email from home tells me that 9.8mm been emptied this morning. So over 60mm for the sequence. Lots of water lying around from Diggers Rest to the NW burbs. Guy at work showed me a picture of the lake in his yard near the airport up against his house.

13.5mm here, bit of overnight drizzle may have added to that.

No wind with the rain, (plenty in the lead up though).

With another 5mm after this morning's reading, that makes 37mm for the event. Guess that means we did pretty well in this neck 'o the woods. It really is impressive how, when that wind turns to the S or SSE in this set-up it can drop large amounts but (even though it's over a sustained period) position, uplift, angle to the wind is very crucial.

Yep, and wind strength I've come to notice, if its high, the Tassie rain shadow effect seems to hit us worse for low pressure systems located below or E/NE of Tassie?

After the 5mm I reported yesterday, we've had an additional 5.5mm. So that bring the total for the event to 42.5mm - best rain for very long time. Partly cloudy, light breeze and cold atm.

..and that drizzle with the unexpected low pressure system drift back towards Sydney overnight gave us another 0.75mm - 17mm for this system.

Very unusual low pressure system, was closed off in the bight, did a loop around the base of Tassie, went NNE then a brief drift W towards Sydney before it got sick of us! Basically as a cut-off low system the whole time???
