Thread needed for this lot, first front due today and quite a strong one although doesn't have the penetration but powerful dynamics on it, nice mid level jet wrapping over the top, bit of cold air behind and a tight little low, be quite nasty winds wrapping around the back and across the top for later so certainly will get quite windy later, especially with any showers or possible isolated thunderstorms. Band of storms on the front atm, most of that probably slides but at least still solid showers for us from it plus a few more from cold air behind.

Things moderate off a bit before a second front comes in very early wednesday morning re-invigorating the showers on a blustery WSW flow. A third and much more substantial cold front is due thursday afternoon and evening with a blast of showers and stronger winds, one to watch closely with also the chance of small hail and cold air thunder overnight and into friday as colder air aloft moves in behind and the flow goes more SW.

On friday a 4th front or more a shortwave trough moves in and a new cold pool pushes in more directly from the SW/SSW with lower thicknesses and a higher chance of small hail. Incredibly according to EC at least a 5th trough/front wraps up from around the back of a broad low further SE and flings up a final spate of showers with renewed cold air aloft for another burst of showers during saturday.

See how that all unfolds but looks like a very good rainfall producer for the coasts and especially the hills where we will easily see 100mm+ for the event in wet spots like Uraidla, Stirling, Lenswood etc. Good chance of 30-50mm as it is for parts of the Adelaide area in that period, dropping right off as we go inland. Once the flow goes more SW, Mid North and Mallee areas will have a greater chance of getting some showers, initially they won't do well due to the westerly nature.

TS cool

The first front loomed darkly to the west about an hour ago, it came over, was about 300 meters wide, dropped about half a mm of rain, now cool, windy, clear and sunny.... hope it gets better as the week progresses, and maybe the fronts get stronger.....?

Thanks for the as usual succinct prog Thunderstruck & good to see you back along with the other older wiser heads. Good to see a little more of the wet stuff as Tec accurately forecast for the last system a small amount for Adelaide with most in a narrow band on the East side of the hills. 3ml here then. So pretty dry.

Quite a nice band of thunderstorms riding the front in the states South East, few rumbles here at home and a quickfire 2mm, 12 second RainRate peaked to 78.4mm/hr.

Expecting a few more showers overnight and into Tuesday, Thursday still looking quite wet as the stronger front moves in so will be plenty of wet stuff to come.

Neptune Island leading the way as with the strongest wind gust, so far at 117km/h.

Good to have 'proper' winter weather make an appearance.

Hopefully as the fronts roll through, people's rainfall totals steadily build up.

Speaking of wind, recorded a gust of 41.8 km/h here in Gulfview Heights at 1:38 am this morning.

This has been the best behaved system in a while. Held off all afternoon yesterday so I could watch the footy with my daughter (Bays lost :(, ah well) but then has kicked into gear since. Woke to steady rain and the sound of the tanks overflow pipe running. Good stuff.

4.0mm until 730am. This is the second best daily rainfall for the year to date.

You know things aren't good when the highest daily rainfall so far into the year is 5.0mm (4/4/18)

Yesterday morning, there were some showers out at Peake between 7 & 10am, then bright sunshine and blowing dust in two locations between Peake & Tailem Bend. Threatening looking cloud band came in once we left Mannum, but only a little rain once we got somewhere between Woodside & Crafers.

Another 2.4mm (as at 6:45am) making a total of 6.4mm for this event. Totals are measured ca between 7 & 8am using a Nylex 250mm rain gauge.

Adelaide Airport (ca 5.5km SSW to the BOM site from home as the crow flies) received 5.8mm making a total of 9.8mm.

6.6mm to 9am yest and then 2.6mm to 9am this morning and so far a further 0.8mm since 9am...been pretty poor again today down here which is unusual for a westerly flow, hoping it comes back in spades tomorrow evening with the best front.

Was just looking at the Doppler wind map for SA and noticed some red in amongst the dark blue over near Yorke Peninsula.

Is this red an anomaly or real? If real what is causing this?

That is aliased winds, meaning the scale has gone past the 90km/hr so it populated the opposite colours inside the darkest blue (and vice versa away from radar) to show winds over 90km/hr.

The way the media is beating up this cold front you'd think we were on a cyclone warning.

Front nearly here and developing nicely from the typical corridor off northern y.p and sliding a bit more than down south as well. Hopefully don't thread the needle and see some torrential rain.

Seems to be setting up some stream showers through that wsw corridor between Y.P. and K.I. so usual wet spots in hills will get some more falls tonight. Turns slightly more sw overnight so spreading a touch more north.

Heaps of moisture pouring in across e.p. towards here at a perfect angle to these hills, should be a nice wet night smile Not all that common to see frequent orographic falls from that direction, e.p. usually shadows.

I was driving down Grange road when the front hit. Heavy rain & wind, visibility reduced but not as bad as Darwin on 29 Jan this year!

Collected another 5.6mm to bring the total to 20.6mm. Inching towards the inch, pun intended!

15mm overnight in Clare, makes 20mm for the event. Still more to come in SSW streams. (and some very cold air!!) Spring gully has had 24.4mm.

Highest event/s total I can find for now is 105.8mm at Lenswood, and 98.8mm at crafers...woodhouse may be higher.

EC has another 15-20mm for the these areas in the next 3 days.

Weather forecasts DO NOT promise anything and are more of a guide of what is expected to happen and looking at the forecast, it said 20 to 40. The issue is that many people look at the higher percentage other than the lower percentage.

Not all forecasts are going to be right. The Bureau UPDATE their forecast daily while some Social Media Platforms do not. They should ALWAYS look at the BoM's forecast and go from there, and use Social Media to get another Idea and maybe ask some questions. Meteorology is a hard science to master as you need to know a tonne of things that are happening in the atmosphere.

Factors on these types of systems are reliant of the steering winds of the streams to move showers to align in particular areas, but the angle was not favourable for parts of the Yorke Peninsula.

Yeah I'm still here, just forgot about the weatherzone forum due to lack of Real Rain systems this year.
19.5 mm system(s) total. So a bit wettish.
Drove through a heavy shower about 7 pm ish around Enfield on MAIN NORTH ROAD. Had wipers on flat chat, slowed down to 40 kmph, drove through a few massive puddles and rivers across the road, but made it through up over the bridge at DRY CREEK and it was dry past the Salisbury highway overpass bridge.

yes betsuin, the uncommon wsw-sw (often with curved flow) stream off Spencer gulf can deliver some great falls up here as it lines up our topography at a right angle and last night was no exception. Our biggest fall by far this entire event...19.2mm overnight. Plenty of lashing rain and solid gusts. often have to wait until the highs get close after series of fronts to get the sou-westerlies we need. Still have some ssw showers and very cold air to come this evening.

Nice to finally score as we only got 4.5mm from the first couple of fronts, westerlies no good for here.

Now at 39.2mm total

Another 7.3mm brings the running total to 27.9mm.

A few brief showers today with some cold gusty winds associated with them. Was quite pleasant to be out in the garden when the sun was out.

That's a great site Betsuin.
Is it the same one as? https://www.waterconnect.sa.gov.au/Systems/RTWD/Pages/Default.aspx
Rain total even along the coast dependent on the shows within some narrow streams that generally are literally JUST North or JUST South of West Lakes Mall. When they do occur here though, help a lot to push up totals. Can anyone explain why these very narrow stream showers occur? TIA.
At any rate, stream showers overnight added to a rare for here, healthy, 29.5ml Winter rain event.

A further 5.4mm brings the running total to 32.9mm (adjustment made for poor addition skills)!

Saltspray - when it comes to streams and that small of a scale, it would depend on where precisely the convergence lies over the gulf, how much moisture is coming in from the ocean and the exact stream direction as landmass can shadow (e.g. ki). I assume also the wind stream direction and strength going up in height will also help to narrow or widen these areas of rainfall. (e.g. a slightly veering or backing shear profile might cause taller convection to change course slightly to the mean surface flow or spread the upper part of the cloud structure further east/west widening the stream in places). Generally though at night, very slight land breezes pushing over the warmer water help to establish thin lines of cloud along convergence boundaries producing narrow corridors of rainfall. A change of only a few degreees in windstream directions will be enough to move these lines slightly.

Still getting some very light showers but wont accumulate much more.

43.8mm total, a decent drop. Creeks are still mostly dry around here though after such a dry past year.

A total of 0.5mm in the gauge this morning brings the final total to 33.4mm, not a bad drop.
