Probably time for a thread given it’s only 3 days away and models are pretty all locked in about a surge of icy air sweeping across SE Australia.

Looking at MSLP charts a surge of very cold air detaches from the Antarctic vortex and surges NE, generating a deep Tasman Low south of Vict and then being dragged across NSW by the Low / next approaching high combo.

Snow to 800m sure possible on the ranges and west of, and of course the Snowies. Thredbo for eg is forecast for over a 1m of snow over the next 7 days, super-charging the snow season.

Unfortunately moisture is limited for the coast so unlikely to see any snow east of say Oberon plateau and south. Barrington may see a flurry but not much unless those winds turn more southerly.

However if those winds do more turn southerly, chance of lower level snow for the ranges east inc Barrington’s - but that’s a big IF at this stage. Those southerlies however will be bitter - one model as them dragging air from around 50s!

Max temps across the Sydney, Illawarra and southern Hunter will be low teens for the weekend, up to 7-8c below average for some places for sure. I’m hoping that we get more unstable southerlies instead and see snow along the eastern higher parts of the ranges.

But at this stage the timing is great for those who want to chase - peak falls from Sat lunch to evening, with more during Sunday morning into early arvo.

Latest EC shows some precip around the Robertson area Saturday afternoon with temps around 5. Could be a small flurry or 3 with the odd shower if they drag down enough cold air. But nothing substantial as yet.

Sunday morning looks to be decent falls right across the usual suspects with Crookwell and Traralgon also a chance. Still too westerly for anything east of those higher peaks.

50s as in 50° S, ayy? Proper polar winds, then.

Jζvla, that map is suggesting snowfall down to the Burrendong, Cudgegong, Kandos, Mudgee, Woodstock-Wyangala regions etc.

Just like the 19th Century! cheers

Last time snow fell down to Wyangala was in 2015; our last proper winter whistle

Yeah not looking too good for the BT's, might not go camping up there if no chance of snow.

Looks like there will be some good precipitation with all of this, mainly Mon-Tues by the looks of it.
Another front coming next Wed as well I believe?
Certainly will be wintry, some snow on the Barringtons for sure.

Today's BOM 4 Day chart looking very juicy.

http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml

Embedded trough after embedded trough from a deep southerly fetch, full of top up moisture for the mountains. It's not surprising that BOM have 1 metre of snow forecast down there.

Yep. A reasonably rare system this one. Particularly for June with such a prolonged period of snow.

Jindabyne max for Saturday is 3 degrees. Don't see that very often.

If I could, I'd be booking a room in Oberon for Friday and Saturday night. I'd wake up on Saturday morning and have a leisurely breakfast at a local cafe, then wait for the juiciness to begin during the afternoon and continue all the way through till I had to come home on Sunday afternoon. smile

But......there's much better information provided there than here, except for all the Off Topic comments. Poor Claude Cat...….. lol.

Also, the current Observations threads keep us up to date in all sorts of places. Far more informative.

Yes, it IS snow focused. Go figure. Ski.com!!
But a lot of info and ob's comes from far and wide, and they are also more into posting maps and charts and forecasts. Even our own davidg posts there which is great. Other former WZ forum members do as well, and from all sorts of locations other than just the snowfields.
I like both sites and religiously check both sites with systems like this one upcoming.
Both are great sources of comment and info.

Lots of short wave troughs embedded in an unstable flow - quite unusual for June, and so early on. Pity the flow wasn’t more southerly for us - we’d see better chances of snow in places like BM’s and Robertson.

Agree. I've got over 10,000 posts on that forum but it's a one trick pony (this type of system is right in its wheelhouse) and is no good for storms, ECLs, heatwaves, etc!

EC staying firm with its outlook, extremely cold, wild weather for Snowies & Tablelands. Canberra a good chance of seeing snow in the ‘Burbs this weekend.

It then likes a decent coastal rain event early next week - this cold pool could deliver for most people!

MetEye pushes majority of snow to Sunday but far out it’s widespread and continues into Monday before coastal rain event.

keep rolling systems through like this with a little bit all round and it will keep people happy. The coastal event looks pretty marginal though and could go either way. Probably another copy of recent events with little penetration to areas that needed it. Decent cold outbreak for sure. Bodes well for the 1 in 50 event Im hoping for this season....

Rain/snowfall totals have dropped a fraction this afternoon, and temps have similarly risen a fraction. It's still a beast of a system though.
That low entering Bass Straight atm looks brilliant.

Yeah was just looking at that - that cold pool looks amazing, stunning for early June. Still think it’s going to be a significant event. EC hasn’t backed off from decent rain for coastal Sydney and north either, sadly though for south it’s lacklustre.

Charts seem to suggest a bit more of an event for the Snowies, less so the CT’s for mind? Sure there’ll be a few flakes around Black Springs/Oberon and Orange but maybe not much accumulation.

I agree. But Meteye is only going for up to 20mm once the winds turn southerly for my neck of the woods!! I will go out on a limb and say about 40-50mm but wouldn't be surprised if its double that!!

Real 'calm before the storm' stuff here today - mild sunny day, winds increasing. Radar showing pre-frontal showers on the Oberon Plateau so the wind change isn't far away.

All models have screwed us for the coastal showers/rain event now frown keeping it all off the coast with the stray shower detaching and wandering across.

It's got quite cloudy in the last hour or so.

Today was actually fairly warm, reaching 19-21 degrees across Sydney, although that wind made it feel cooler. Then again, I think it's the wind that has kept the nights warm, consistently overshooting the forecast the last few nights.

Showers are now moving through the Blue Mountains. Mt Boyce is on 5.3, down from a max of 9.1 just before 2:00PM. Orange is on 6, Bathurst on 8. THose would be a little below average but not particularly cold.

It is getting cooler here in Bathurst with some showers (heavy at times). Fairly windy ... excited to see what this system will hold.

Is it going to rain tonight or get very windy at the SCG during the footy?

Footy?
The football is in Russia at the moment.
What is this "footy" you speak of?
Anyway, whatever is on at the SCG, it isn't going to rain.

Just saw some video of heavy snowfall in Corin Forest in the ACT! Impressive, hopefully those shortwave troughs deliver big time.

This "event" has done well so far for the ski fields.
Perisher has transformed from grass to skiable within 36 hrs.
Hopefully, it's sliding north and the highlands will get some decent white stuff. Models still appear to agree.

Quite a nice winters day up here, about 20 or 21c according to my car thermometer, a little bit breezy at times.
Calm as now.

Meteye have upped the anti ever so slightly for rainfall, I still think they need to double it.

Meteye has snow forecasted for the BTs for Sun, Mon and Tuesday, I might have to ring in sick on Monday!!

The wind was quite tame today but yes it's nasty tonight. 100+ km at Bellambi right now [censored] that. Yet everywhere else, even on the Highlands, it's not too bad.

Tomorrow not looking too great to me with lack of moisture being an issue, but still could be something. If I were you I would go Shooters and stick around til the late arvo if you wanted to see some snow. As Kino says the cold air doesn't arrive til Sunday morning. Looks like there will be a decent amount of precip Saturday night into very early Sunday morning.

Winds still hovering between very strong to gale force here, up there with the strongest in the country at the moment.

Sadly one this event peters out, there’s some lame stable weather settling in for the rest of the outlook. Dry, average days but cold nights as little wind.

There's certainly a lot of wind about but no particularly cold air outside the Alps. Mt Boyce has been stuck on 4 deg for several hours, Sydney on 13-14. The cold air is some way away yet.

EDIT: Bellambi has recorded a gust of 107 kmh. It seems to be in a bit a S wind tunnel, Sydney coastal area peak gusts are mostly in the 60s.

One very light flurry here at Cooks Gap last night and a little sleet, but I think most of this event will happen to our South frown

That's pretty impressive DVC.

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/satellite

On the sat link, there is a band of moisture heading towards the Alps (snow) and moisture building towards the north (potential snow) for the Central Tablelands and parts of the Southern Highlands.
Then, there can clearly be seen two imbedded troughs following that are pushing more in a northerly direction. This could be the snow for the above latter areas overnight and tomorrow. Today's forecast synoptics confirm this. http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml

Meteye has backed off a little for snow totals for tomorrow over such a wide area, but now has some for the Northern Tablelands, which it didn't have yesterday.

Still, an exciting system for cold lovers, and generally playing out as forecast by the models from several days ago.

There's some pretty impressive photos on ski.com from the Alps of the snow that has fallen in the past 48 hrs.

Watch out for roos mate, not to mention other wildlife like wombats.

Glad to hear of snow up at Taralga, it's raining in the Highlands but would not be too far from snow.

Seeing videos on facebook just before dark of snow around Roslyn, east of Crookwell. Settling on the road too.

If the showers keep streaming in from the same direction, it might not be worth going out to Shooters, Crookwell might be best.

Good to see reports of snow. Hope there's lots more for those chasing. It looks good on and West of the Divide.

I thought I might go up there this weekend but things have got busy and I'm coming down with a cold. Hopefully there'll be more opportunities later in the season.

EDIT: The latest forecast has upgraded the rainfall totals for Sydney on Monday and Tuesday, now 20-60 mm for the two days.

Showers are moving across the Blue Mountains - maybe there are a few flakes in them, at least for the higher places. Mount Boyce (1,070 m) is on 2.2 deg.

Also, unexpectedly, showers are moving into SW Sydney. When I was outside a little while ago there was thin mid level cloud on the Western side of the sky.

Well Meteye have upped the anti on rainfall here again, forecasting upwards of 70mm, which imo is closer to the mark compared to a couple of days ago when they were only tipping 20mm.

Today was breezy enough but it was still relatively warm about 19c.

Now I have conundrum on Monday, chase snow up at Barrington Tops or watch a coastal storm pass through?

Hmmm, so maybe this one has fizzed out? Perhaps a chance for a bit more moisture this evening but think temps will be too warm by then. The hill up behind Jenolan Caves, where the range just creeps above 1300m is where I would be going.

Fizzed out? Seeing plenty of great pics of widspread snow, including in Orange. Another band pushing through Vic now may bring more falls later today.

Looks like theres some thick cloud moving north from albury thats causing some showers in that area. Will it make it to oberon plateau? I just rain-x'd my car and might go for round 2 with a night snow chase if that's the case.

Currently in Sunny Corner and there is settled snow above 1100m.
On the drive up it started sleeting at Mt Tomah with a dusting of snow at Clarence. At 10:00am there was no snow in Lithgow itself, just some sleet falling.
The first settled snow was on the slopes of Mt Lambie, and then a dusting at the Sunny Corner turnoff at Yetholme.
The deepest snow was on the approach to Sunny Corner on Sunny Corner road from Yetholme, with drifts up to 5cm in places above 1200m. Only a couple of cms at best in the town, and on Mt Ovens near Bathurst.

Glad to hear of the reports across the tablelands... made the long trips worthwhile. I’ve just come back from a drive up to The Pinnacle( a lesser peak east of Mt Canobolas around 1,200 m) . The road to Mt Canobolas has been closed. Was amazed to see that there is snow lying in the paddocks and orchards from the 950 m contour level and up . Around 5 cm remains at The Pinnacle carpark( at 1120 m). Many people/ families enjoying the snow, tobogganing or walking gingerly up the steep path to the summit...was great to see. Still hovering around 3 deg here in Orange brrrr...no wonder the snow is still lying about.

Bright sunshine and clear skies today in Sydney, with what someone here a week or so described as a lazy wind - it goes through you, not around. It looks like temps in Sydney have peaked around 15-16.

Looks like the snow has mostly happened West of the Divide, none in places like Katoomba.

I thought I saw pics of snow up the BM’s Steve.

Radar shows the beginning of our rain event starting to form on the south coast - band of unstable southerlies moving north that eventually bomb into another deep Tasman Low. The wrap-around moisture feeding into the colder air will form lines of showers with embedded storms that will hopefully run along the coast before the Low slides e/se.

There actually was a bit of snow in Katoomba. I was up early this morn and the cars were covered in a dusting. I walked to work in a snow shower (which quickly turned to sleet). Went out to empty a bin @ around 8:30am and there were a few flakes swirling around, but yeah. Not a lot to get excited about.

The blob of cold air that’ll cause the low to form is currently moving over Canberra and heading ne. Should hit the coast around 9 and expect we should start to see cyclogenises off the coast by midnight.

That’s a model forecast, don’t think it’s as big as that looking at satpic and the moisture isn’t anywhere near that big either.

Pretty close to the sat pic, but yeah looking at pressure gradients around the state and plus looking at the radar you are pretty close to the mark.

I swear we've just been plain unlucky if we had a cold pool of even this kind of proportion with last weeks North-West cloudbands we would've been happy chaps.
Very annoying but this might be what continues to happen with a strengthened HPS sitting across AUS predicted for most of this winter.

Here's a photo showing the snow at our place around 11 this morning. Still snowing on and off with little melting. High today was 0.5 degrees. Noticed lots of sightseers along Shooters Hill Rd this afternoon - traffic was pretty heavy for a road that is normally very quiet. Never used to see anyone much. Such is the blessing / curse of social media.

I was at Oberon about 1pm, there was only a little bit of settled snow around. Not really that good. But 8cm at SH at 3pm so most of that would still be in tact. Road up there was fine though, no snow. I managed to meet DaveM there too!

Shooters Hill seems to be the highest point that you can drive to, at 1,355 m. That extra 200 metres or so above the surrounding countryside makes all the difference.

9-14C here yesterday, the Hunter copping some strong winds, and pretty much as cold a maximum as it can get with a purely SW airflow and no cloud cover or showers. (maximums below this, which are rare, are associated with a strong SSE airflow and rain or drizzle).
Some showers overnight, but not a lot in it, and now 9C.

Nice Winter scene Stoxxo.

---

It's solid overcast here although it doesn't look to have rained. Cloud and wind have kept Sydney mimima to around 9-10.

There's a mass of showers marching Northwards off the Sydney coast, as there has been for much of this month, headed for the Newcastle and Port Stephens areas. I can hear lightning crackling on the radio, with the radar showing storm cells some 40-60 km out to sea.

Radar & satpic show a tight small low se off Newcastle with strong storms around the LLCC. massive slab of rain headed onshore there with damaging wind gusts likely.

Further south a feeder band currently scraping Wollongong and headed to Sydney, Doppler shows strong winds likely with showers, which are pulling down some very cold air. Small hail possible in stronger showers you’d think along coastal strip.

Decent rain here now and cold. Solid blob moving towards Sydney coastal areas.

On another note - massive ship fire here right now, iron or carrier well alight. 100 firies from across the region.

edit: check out that solid mass of cold air heading right at us - YIKES. It is going to go off later today if that pushes in.

I would head up, but I have a sick kid at home today.

Like you said BTs will be packed, if I could go I would head up to Gloucester tops first, then take it from there.

Some moderate to solid rain falling since 8.30am, wind gusty at times and cold too, could be a day here where the top temp is only 10-12c, but weather station now only reports rainfall now.

I think the temp is going to struggle to get to 15C today. Has not even cracked 10 at Bellambi yet (since 9am that is), and only 11 at Albion Park. Will be interesting to see how cold it will be given that we usually don't get rain like this the day after a strong cold front.

Edit 10.3 at 10am smile

Seems about right with Newcastle only nudging 11C and it may stay around that temp if the rain sticks around. Meanwhile here it's now 15 and sunny with a downslope SW'ly. So the 15 forecast was appropriate and in fact the temp will probably get to 17 now, maybe a lot less at Bellambi though without the downslope effect.

Unfortunately yes, although places like Dungog, Stroud and Gloucester should see a decent drop.

Didnt feel too bad to me. Mind you, being in the CT's for the day would have accustomed me to the cold a bit.

It did indeed manage to hit 17 here, amazing what that downslope SWer does. Rain has returned now after a mostly sunny arvo. Willamtown has only hit 10.8 today which is pretty incredible.

Good news is EC is throwing another polar vortex across us later this weekend, with GFS also agreeing to an extent. Seems this winter may just be as cold as claimed by the QLD fruitloop. It’s early days, I know, but the next change looks more savage, throwing the 540 line well into southern QLD dragging air from the 50’s again!

Won’t be long and we may see the 534 line making an appearance.

Hoping we catch that little line swinging in from Kiama - plenty of yellow and orange in it, possible small hail.

Nice and Brisk here today. No snow to report unfortunately. The rain just soaking the coast again....same as the last 3 or 4 events. Just doesnt want to move inland.

Sniff of cutoff cold pools here and there amongst model runs. Sooner or later we are going to connect one with NW moisture...or a proper onshore ECL setup for some widespread rain.

Winter off to a flyer!

Consistent signs, with another NW feed happening over WA right now.

you’re kidding aren’t you? It’s mid June, not sure what else one would expect so early on.

Anyways the next change will bring a more substantial fall for the BM’s if it comes off, has a better southerly trajectory.

Last substantial snow was on 17th July 2015, then before that was 12th October 2012. There have been a few okay settled falls since 2015, 27th June 2016 comes to mind there.

An early snowfall that comes to mind is May 27th-28th 2000.

9-13C registered for yesterday, although that will be upgraded as I can see a 13.6C after 3pm on the 24 hour graph. Most of the day hovered around 11-12C though.
No long term records at Maitland Airport, so not a record, or at nearby Tocal - which also had 9-13C, although the 24 hour readings only show 12.4C as a max, so a very brief spike has it rounded off to 13C.
Of course Williamtown is the talk of the town with the coldest June max in it's 68 year history.

Heard a few rolls of thunder about half an hour ago. The lightning-active cells are well out to sea, however.

Sydney OH has received about 8 mm since 4:00 making it 11 since 9:00 yesterday. The rain looks is penetrating inland this time.

Sound of steady rain woke me up just before 6 am. Not sure why cause it wasn't very loud but I'm loving every moment of it. Wasn't expecting the rain to penetrate inland given yesterday's showers evaporating just after hitting the coast.

Keep it coming Huey. smile

8 degrees and raining here. I cant recall ever seeing a colder temp here with precipitation. Getting closer to that snow event!!

had 14mm in moderate rain period this morning since about 7am. Which is pretty significant fall considering our last few years. Would love it to push on with some really heavy showers now.

The odd rumble of thunder to the SW where it seems the heaviest rain has tracked.

Good to see rain falling further inland from the coast.

Not sure what the temp is here, probably about the 10-11c mark. Some really strong wind gust overnight with the odd rumble of thunder about too. 40.4mm to 9am this morning.

There's been persistent light rain all morning, sometimes a bit heavier, with the occasional rumble, most recently about 20 minutes ago. It's 11° on the balcony. We did have brighter periods and even a sunny break around 10:00.

Total falls in Sydney since 9:00 have been mostly around 5-10 mm near the coast, less inland.

Are you in Hawkes Nest Eddy? The wifes Dad lives there in Yamba St. Great place! Have walked along that stretch a number of times and have been amazed at how much sand is constantly replaced there.

I live in Tea Gardens alby_14, I used live in Hawks Nest and rented a house there in Yamba St about 20 years ago.
Has your Father in-law lived in Hawks Nest long?

The radar shows a break coming up for Sydney after the current rain band passes. There's blue sky to the South.

Temp here has dropped back to 10.7 degrees after that rain band came through but there is clearing to the south east now so I expect it to rise again once the sun comes out.
Looks like the worst (or best smile ) has passed and there'll only be isolated showers around after this.

It's becoming nice and sunny here Homer so I would say that the sun will be back out up there. It's a very interesting day of rain and sun.

Wow. Nobbys Head has dropped more then 2° in a few minutes and currently at 9.5°. Under 10° at 2.18pm. Weird too that the wind shifted south coming off the ocean.

Sydney looks like it’s getting torn a new one - impressive squall line, with more lining up behind. Pity the approaching trough will push this stuff away during tomorrow - bout time a Tasman Low actually benefited us!

Just went outside to have a look and saw quite a few flashes.
It looks nasty and I wouldn't be surprised to hear reports of hail.
83 km/h gust at Little Bay at 5.17 pm with this squall line.

That is interesting and certainly believable given the heavy cells that were nearer the coast.

Was an intense minute or two as it passed over.

That squall line moved over here. It got very windy with heavy rain (now eased off) , flashes of lightning and thunder. The temperature at OH and the Airport dropped by 4 degrees in half an hour, from a late maximum in the case of OH.

Heavy rain here now.

Given the choice of being stuck in a long bus queue exposed to sideways rain in a gale OR stuck inside a warm dry car, which option would most people take?

Hint. Once that friggin bus finally arrives and you manage to get on before it's full, you are then stuck in traffic anyway. Only you are now crammed into the bus like sardines and your clothes are wet.

I work tradesman's hours and still put up with the [censored] traffic. It's not often though that public transport commuters have to deal with a night like tonight. 1st world problems.
Being self employed, I lost a days wages today due to the rain.
I'd happily put up with a faulty umbrella and a bus queue than have to forego a days wages.
And, for all us weather nerds, a night like tonight is exciting, even though it is a little uncomfortable if one is out in the elements.

Just heard another loud rumble. **Off to check the radar and tracker again.

Coming back from work today going across the Roseville bridge there was a good shot gun flang and torrential rain near Belrose.

Unfortunately I've come home to some wet carpet again. I hate dodgy roof tradies, they've had 2 goes at it now but I wont name them on here.

Is that what you got out of my post? Lol.
I wasn't suggesting that at all. Just saying that one night of discomfort due to inclement weather isn't really that bad and we all go through times of similar discomfort in one way or another at times.
I wasn't playing down how bad it might have been travelling home tonight from anyone's place of employment. I was just trying to put it into perspective.
We are pretty lucky here in Sydney. Nights like these are pretty rare. I was taking a glass half full approach.
Apologies if I didn't explain myself properly in the first instance.

Still, not a as bad as waiting for the tube at 6am in London in Winter.

I wish you would name them as my bathroom skylight leaks and my roof is in need of some serious TLC. Don't wanna get the same people!

Obs Hill had 8mm in only a few minutes there (possibly a bit more depending on the next refresh). Under a little red cell for 2-3 frames

I'm in a unit block but I just need to go through the right means.

If anyone is going to know what conditions can happen in thunderstorms/heavy rain and fix it, it's you Homer. Cheers.

Up to 36mm here now.

That cell passed over me. It was really bucketing down for a while. Sydney OH received 9.8 mm from 22:10 to 22:30.

The lightning seems to have finished, at least for now. The satellite shows clearer skies coming, although there are still showers about.

Sydney, at least near the coast, is building up some decent totals from this event, 43 mm at OH since 9:00 yesterday, more for the Eastern suburbs and Northen beaches.

44mm here in 24 hours. Thats a good score for us.
We really want 200mm now while everything is wet to make a difference to the dams. They are still barely moving, not just mine.....most of the local dams.

Really going to be hoping for another juicy event in the next couple weeks. All the coastal folk (slot) will just have to deal with it!!! We need it!!

This is that all round event that would seem to be fairly rare, with widespread snow and decent rain included. I suppose everyone would be happy enough if they kept on rolling through like that...maybe with a bit more NW moisture.

Nice stuff GR.

40.9mm in the 24 hours to 9am, event total stands at 84.4mm, there were some really sharp heavy downpours in the early hours that I reckon may have contained some small hail.

Nice to see and feel the warmth from the sun.

It's cool and fairly cloudy but with blue sky about. The sun's just come out. It hasn't rained since before dawn and I think that apart from the odd sprinkle, the rain has finished.

The event total for Chatswood was 55 mm, for Sydney OH it was 58. Sydney OH has now passed it June average, for the first above average rainfall month since June last year (although February this year went close).

Good to see Gringos got worthwhile rain. Hopefully Stormy did also.

Yesterday's max at OH was 14.7. Although not particularly cold, it was the coldest so far this year, in fact the coldest in nearly a year (June 28, when 14.3).

It looks as though there's not much weather for the next week or so as the high pressure ridge reestablishes itself over Southern Australia.

EDIT: the Winter Solstice occurs tomorrow 21 Jun 2018 at 8:07 pm East Australian Time. So if you want to sacrifice a goat to the Sun god, time to get your goat ready.

Yes that is good GringosRain,I measured 33 mms,say 79 mms for the month bugger all realy, I love the rain, but it is people on tank water and the creeks and dams around me I like to see full and running well, they look terrible when they dry up.we will have to have a flood in the Quorrobolong creek Gringo to fill the lagoon over here.
