The Tamworth reading is suspect (sharp spikes within a period of 1-2 minutes) but the others are OK. Both Dubbo and Parkes moved to significantly colder sites in the 1990s so the records can only really be considered as representative of the last 20-25 years.

-4 now forecast for Richmond for tomorrow morning.
That would be a rare occurrence I suspect that a forecast min that low is issued for the Sydney Basin.

It has dropped exactly 3 deg's here in the past 40 minutes - from 13.2 to 10.2 C.

I remember years ago when I was in school the forecast min for Obs Hill was 2 degrees. There was a bit of talk about records broken.

It turned out that the temperature actually got nowhere near that in the end. Something like 5 or 6 degrees.

See what tomorrow morning brings.

Already pretty cold at Watsons Bay https://www.wunderground.com/personal-we...localwx_pwsdash although I do have my suspicions.

Can anyone confirm if South Head is iced over at -39C?

I know someone who lives in Bronte so I'll give them a call and see if their water pipes have frozen.

BOM forecast for Katoomba of -5C! I wonder if itís a mistake? I lived in the BMís just over 30 years and donít think it ever got that cold. I used to record temps as low as -9C (once) but frequently-5C in a gully down the back of my house, but that cold layer of air was perhaps only 10-20m deep. A Ďgeneralí official reading of -5C for Katoomba would be quite significant.

Yeah Katoomba usually has a bit of wind about to stop any severe frosts from happening. I guess if the wind does die down then -5 is attainable especially at that elevation. Past data shows the last record for July is -5.4c while in June it hit -8.2c.

Sub 5 is unusual at Sydney OH in recent decades. Here are the most recent sub-5 readings (reverse sequence)

30/6/2010: 4.3
17/7/2008: 3.7
23/6/2008: 4.9
28/7/2003: 4.9
12/7/2002: 4.3
21/7/1995: 4.3
14/7/1987: 4.9
26-27-28/71986: 3.2, 3.1, 4.4
21/6/1986: 4.8

I have noted coldest readings by month. I might have missed multiple sub 5s in the same month.

Before the mid 1980s it happened every year or two. When I was a kid, sub-40 Fahrenheit (4.4c) was unusual but happened occasionally. Maybe most years before about 1970.

Last sub 3 was 16/7/1970 at the end of a run of three sub-5s: 4.4, 3.8, 2.7. That year also featured a 4.9 on August 20.

The sub 3 before that was 2.7 on 26/7/1968. It got down to 4.6 on the 25th.

To get an idea of what most Sydney suburbs experienced, subtract 4. For the Nepean-Hawkesbury Valley, subtract 8.

Doesn't look like Richmond will come close to it's long term record of -8.3 from the old site, but quite possibly it will break this current Richmond AWS record.
Also looking at sites Why does the Katoomba (Murri Murri st) record 1400mm annually compared to Mount Boyce's 972mm.

Well, I wouldnít rule out some error in terms of years available data between Katoomba and Mt Boyce, but having lived in the Mtns for decades I can tell you for sure that on average Katoomba receives far more rain than Mt Boyce. Katoomba picks up substantially more rain from coastal driven rainfall than does Mt Boyce, despite their being less than 20km from one another. There may be only 60m of elevation difference between the two sites but Mt Boyce has a much more westerly aspect to the weather, which can be seen during cold events, Mt Boyce is far more likely to record a sub 5C max than Katoomba. The difference is also noticeable in terms of frosts. West of the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath is generally much frostier than east. Not that that explains the rainfall difference as such, just that there is more difference between the two sites than would be expected given their proximity and meagre difference in altitude.

Storms are of course the other big factor. I would say Katoomba is probably a little stormier, but in terms of rainfall that would cause a significant average difference, itís the rain from the east and the heavier drizzle (for sometimes weeks at a time) that would add up to Katoomba being a wetter site.

Great post Steve.
Thanks for the stats.

Currently 5.3 here. Lowest at this time of night all winter.

Marrangaroo and Orange having a battle atm.

-3.9 vs -4.1.

Pretty impressive temps for this early in the evening.

Cessnock already into the negs at 9.30pm.

A very big chance of a frost here in the morning, frost chase coming up in the morning if that light westerly breeze stays away!!

It's a calm, still, very 'bracing' night here in Chain Valley Bay where I'm staying for a couple of days. It's a moonless night with brilliant starscapes. The car thermometer was showing 5į around 9:15PM.

Sydney OH is down to 9į, the Middle ring around 5-6 and the usual cold spots near Sydney down to 3 or 4. It will be interesting to see how low it gets by dawn. Maybe a bit of frost here.

Thanks for the stats there Steve, impressive run of lows there in '86 for OH. If sportsbet had a market on this mornings low, I'd put some money on 4.7 being the min laugh

Westerly blowing at the moment, I reckon the wind will spoil the party.
