The longest period without rain here was 77 days, 6 hours and 10 minutes. My records go back to the start of 1994.

Interesting, Graham, that you have a longer rainless record duration than here at Manilla, beyond the divide.
To us, it seems that the coast never goes a week without rain!

I guess that you still didn't have two consecutive dry calendar months.

No, we quite often get long dries. It's been more than a month since our last drop (July 5).

Not sure when those 77 days happened. My software tells me it did, but doesn't tell me when!

It was last year, and it included two consecutive calendar months too. smile Your post from the end-of-the-month September 2017 thread:

In September, like August, we received no rain. (And we only got 7 millimetres in July.) We've never before had two successive months without rain.

We set several other records for September, including highest maximum and minimum temperatures. Details here.

BOM's AWS at Coffs Harbour Airport only had 0.2mm over the same period of days:
July 2017 http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201707/html/IDCJDW2030.201707.shtml
August 2017 http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201708/html/IDCJDW2030.201708.shtml
September 2017 http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201709/html/IDCJDW2030.201709.shtml
Even BOM's weather station at Dorrigo had just 0.8mm over the same period.

Thank you, Seabreeze. I'd forgotten it was so recent!

I hope this isn't the start of dementia. smile

Thats quite phenomenal really, I wonder what is the longest dry spell along the NSW coastline? 77 and a quarter days would have to be up there?

I have checked my records, my longest dry spell is 44 days that occurred in 2005 July 22nd to September 4.

My records go back to 1997.

Yes, ifishcq, rainless periods of over 200 days seem to be all in the monsoonal north. It seems that the dry season can be completely without rain and can extend into the wet season before or after it.
Interesting that the long dry in your dad's records was nearly 40 years ago.
I am sure there were quite recent news reports of people who claimed to have had "no rain for a year". If that has happened, where could that have been?

I'm not sure where, but wherever it was, someone was stretching the truth. (Sometimes 'no rain' is shorthand for 'no substantial rain').

As far as very long dry spells in coastal NSW are concerned, I suspect the 1946 winter in the north would provide a few (the first site I checked, Lismore, had a 59-day one).

Melbourne's record is 40 days in 1954-55. This followed only a few days after the end of Melbourne's wettest 40-day period on record...

I guess -- per the thread title -- it depends on the definition of impacting rain and the context in which it is applied smile . From this perspective, statistics can have very little if any substance or veracity to them without those two elements...and in the absence of a valid and reasonable interpretation of statistics...including a reason behind them, I find them to be a hollow phenomenon.

So yes -- if there is a period of time with limited or no impacting rainfall, I'd call that for what it is smile . This seems somewhat of an interesting topic...if purely stats are your thing smile .

[This post is not a response to the previous one. More of a curiosity.]

"Alice Springs Airport hasn't received any rain since the middle of April. Today is their 158th consecutive day without rain, beating the site's previous dry spell record of 157 days from 2012 and also a 147 day stretch during 1972."
- weatherzone news item by Ben Domensino posted September 18 2018.

I would still like to know of longest rainless periods in Victoria.

The Darwin suburb of Leanyer had five full calendar months without recorded rainfall last year. ( As did the Darwin Airport site ). So 155 days at my home in Leanyer. So far this year I am running at 149 rainless days since 0.2mm on 21st April. So two years in a row of record breaking dry spells in Darwin's Northern Suburbs. The Airport site recorded 0.2mm on 14th August and 0.8mm on the 20th April, other than those two days the last decent rain at the Airport was on the 14th April. So yeah, even though we have a seasonal 'Dry', this year ( same as last year ) has been particularly dry....

Hi Rigger
It is interesting that you are in a second year of very long rainless spells.
Although rainless spells owe much to chance, it suggests that Alice, like parts of NSW, may be in a dry period that is already longer than one year.

Indeed its been a dry year in the Center ( Alice Springs Airport site ).... only 86.4mm YTD. And the dry spell is even more significant considering that 0.2mm fell on 13/4/18, but prior to that the real dry spell began on the 12th of March when 0.2mm was also recorded. So from 12/3/18 until today the Alice has only had 0.2mm ! Severe drought conditions in the Red Center !
