I think also the fact that NH has more land, so gets hotter in summer than SH does in summer. Also Antarctica has a massive ice sheet that gets very cold, Arctic is ocean and doesn't get as cold. Also continents running from equator right through to Arctic and nothing like cold Southern Ocean running in a band right around. So NH weather can have more N-S mixing (meridional) and SH weather is more E-W (zonal).

Fun fact running counter to all this - even though it is close to peak temps for NH SSTs and min temps for SH, the heat content of the top 300 meters of ocean at 10S in the Western Pacific is quite a bit higher than the heat content at 10N.

Don't know. I'm guessing currents must be different south to north hemisphere in a way that drags more heat down to 200-400m depth in SH, perhaps instead of pushing it towards the poles.

Has Donald Trump been messing around with Florence? Has he been dumping dry ice all over her? Grab em by the eye wall!
Seriously, why has she weakened so much when conditions were suppose to be so perfect for intensification? I have heard some say over there that there is no reason for this weakening trend. Has anyone have any idea what is going on Thanks! Cheers.

Ingesting drier air by the looks of it but should reintensify prior to landfall.

Thanks Kino, there has been a lot of African dust in the Atlantic this season.

Latest tech notes suggest open eyewall to the SE possibly caused by temporary shear but will reintensify.
Atlantic getting crowded, Joyce to the east of Flo atm.

Just came back from a short getaway to Tasmania and the sheer green-ness (almost appearing phosphorescent in places) and lushness of the scenery there was such a welcome contrast to the endless dry browns and haze filled skies of much of NSW/QLD. Not really surprising how green it usually is in western and southern TAS in winter and early spring but was beautiful nevertheless.

There was distinct haze trapped under the subsidence inversion all the way from Brisbane to Sydney and beyond and kept getting thicker the further south we flew over central and southern NSW. One particular fire near the SE QLD/NE NSW border this afternoon was contributing more than its fair share to the smoke haze.

Below are some photos and slow-motion videos from around Mt Wellington and Cygnet (with the first one being of Brisbane this afternoon):

Thanks for the useful info guys, yes it seems the Gulf Stream is what makes the difference. If there were no gulf stream, im presuming the Hurricanes would be restricted to the Carrabean

The usual, as for today definitely not showing any signs of precip of any sort. There's abit of a light seabreeze and some moisture very much on the coast. Also looking at the setup quickly there's some moisture in the midlevels and I'd have to say very limited instability with cold air aloft and steepening lapse rate. The low precip would have to be due to very high based activity at all but would be happy if there was some crawlers around not confident on that just hope as weatherwise it seems normal and we are just turning the corner.

Slight chance of some hit & miss activity on Sunday as the change surges up the coast but profiles look pretty unexciting so even that's far from certain.

And thanks Mad Elf and doug smile

Lovely stuff Ken. You'd almost think you were somewhere in the English countryside.

Contrasting conditions on the northern MNC (with a NE'ly seabreeze all-day) versus the southern MNC (where the dry WNW/NW'ly broke through). For example at 3:30pm:
Town Temp°C / Dewpoint°C Wind
Coffs 22.3 / 16.8 NNE
Kempsey 28.3 / 14.5 ENE
Port 24.4 / 17.1 NNE
Taree 33.0 / -4.0 WNW

Slight chance of an early morning storm about the local area as the front comes through. If something does manage to occur, it should be low-precipitating (very little if any rain).

Confusing GFS map on weatherzone. Has about 50-60mm for Brisbane this week. Is there any other indication that there is actually a chance for some rain?
