Our Pigeons haven't turned up yet...though the march flies have started the last couple of days...just a couple of light showers have started the hatch out, so its a slow burn at the moment...we might need an inch or 2 of rain to see them in full force though....I cant wait to get down to Hinchinbrook island during the school holidays to see the Pigeons, march flies and midges in all there glory...it never disappoints this time of year..

Simmo, 6 months with just 28mm..I wonder if that's about the driest non-outback reading in the entire country..?..thats Atacama like dryness..!

Speaking of wind farm's I saw this article...

http://www.hydrogenfuelnews.com/the-bigg...tional/8535900/

I'm no expert but I'm still not sold on solar and wind in its current incarnation...with wind energy costing between 2-3 times the cost of coal to produce depending whether its on land or sea...and these home solar systems costing around 5 times the cost .

I just cant reconcile how we can think its Ok to push for such a robust mining sector that is happy to accommodate and subsidise any company that proposes to pull our coal from the earth and sell it overseas (and promises the allure of all those jobs) but because of our blind adherence to the "Paris targets" we cant use it ourselves to produce an abundance of cheap energy..

It seems to all come down to politics...5 different Prime Ministers in the last 5 or 6 years..there is something clearly wrong with our Political system and the direction we are headed..

Sorry for this politic rant but, damn, this weather is just so boring....I cant wait for the first storms to arrive..

You think your weather is boring? I can't even take a photo of a decent sunrise, or sunset - it's cloudless day after cloudless day.

As for politics, in this time of unrelatable weather, probably the less I say the better. Was going to ramble on with a few thoughts about getting rid of party politics and just voting in a single individual with no political ties, but think I'd better not. grin

Hahaha I hope it never gets that extreme. Just did a quick google and Nothern Atacama holds the record for longest period with no rain, 172 months or over 14 years. Bugger that hahaha!!

Pretty warm today with 33c. Bloody windy at the moment though.

A friend is in Essendon this weekend and she messaged at 1:30 yesterday afternoon and it was 8c there. Was 5c by 4:30pm. Brrrr!!

Just on 36.0 degrees, and 11% humidity (lack thereof) at 2.55pm.
Windy here too, not a nice wind either, although it does settle down for a while.

Warmest day of the season so far ..around 30-31c...

Yeah 28 ,unfortunately with our current political system all the bickering and jostling within partys and pandering to minorities to make up numbers stops any real change happening..you may be right we need to look at changing the current system..

Simmo I have seen articles where shadecloth like mesh is used to catch fog to harvest water in the Atacama...14 years without rain..I guess you have to come up with something to survive...

Just out of interest ...here's a couple of old photo's of photo's from me backpacking about 25 years ago......before the days of mobile phones and the internet and GPS etc...Lesson to all...Best not to take a back road, goat track through the Atacama desert.....No Racq there..and nightime temps down to about -10c...was not much fun trying to survive the nights...never been so cold..

Laguna Verde...where the guys are standing is at 14000ft altitude...all that water in one of the driest places on the planet and its so so cold at around -50c but stays in a liquid state due the the massively salty composition...... amazingly beautiful place with snow on the peak at the start of the altiplano about an hour out of San Pedro de Atacama near the Chilean/Bolivian Border...not a good swimming hole though...

Thanks for sharing. Amazing shots.
Those were the days weren't they, when we just took off and didn't worry about anything.
End 1972 drove Sydney to Cairns with a friend in his ratty old 1960s holden station wagon, that started boiling every 60 minutes or so.
We drove back south thru the dirt tracks between Sarina and Marlborough, without a map and no preparation.
I honestly have no idea how we managed it when I think of it now.
Bottomed out at one point and had a leaky exhaust as well.

Awesome photos Scott, thanks for sharing. It is amazing the harsh environments that exist on this planet.
I did not know of the Atacama or Laguna Verde so has been very interesting reading about them.

Yeah dunno what I did there Hickory...they are just photo's of old paper photo's which have incurred some cyclone damage..

It looks like the tradewinds are set to pick up for the start of the school holidays...but still no rain on the horizon..pretty nippy last night...

That sounded like a cool adventure 28..back in the days before all the concrete buildings and urban sprawl came to Cairns...

Simmo..Whats also amazing is that in these incredibly harsh environments you can sometimes find people and animals that have adapted to be able to survive there...I cant figure out how or why but they are there..!..where we stayed at remote outposts overnight with local families known by the guide they had no water for bathing and very little grows there so no wood for a fire other than a small cooking fire...talk about hardship....give me the jungle or beach anyday..

The smoke from the bush fire near Quaids Dam is showing up on radar.

Looks like it has burnt a decent area.

Well i know you are not Asian, one has his back turned so it's a %50%50 shot! and i don't think you ever had black hair.
Strange what 25 years will do to a person.
Now i will just sneak back under my rock for a little while longer. grin

Mate you are just jealous of my long blonde locks.... grin

Go and look at a photo of yourself 25 years ago, Dean, and then take a look in the mirror....I'll even buy you a beer to cry in.. poke

Marchies were starting to get a bit fierce yesterday...we were all getting a bit grumpy and annoyed...no doubt more will hatch out today..

Sorry, can't do that, i have broken too many mirrors over the years just by looking into them, so no longer can afford to buy them!
Anyway i can no longer see my face anymore as it is covered in too much hair. whistle

Nice little drop of rain this morning, can already see the brown patches of grass turning green.

6mm yesterday. Save watering the little patch of grass I own for another few days. The days are warming quickly and the sun has some real bite in it. Has been some great hiking and biking weather.

Quite jealous of your travels there Scott12, never even had a passport myself but have seen nearly every nook and cranny of Aus itself. And still have a lot more to explore, but I doubt I will ever see it all.
If I ever did have the urge to leave Aus. I'd be heading off to the pre Inca areas of South America. So many mystery's so little time.
