Those winter sunrise/sunset times in Mena don't seem too bad compared to here. On Dec 21st, Birmingham's sunrise is at 8:15 am and sunset at 3:54pm.

There are some people who would prefer year round daylight savings, but that would mean sunrise after 9am even in southern areas of the UK, even later in the north.

Folks:

Well, it sure looks like Mena will experience the first freezing minimum of Fall in the morning (Friday) as my area is under a Freeze Warning from 3-9AM in the morning. Our last freezing minimum of Spring was on March 23rd--219 days ago.
At 5:40PM today (Thur.) KENA reported the temperature as (chilly) 58F/14.4C and with the winds (N) abating and low humidity levels, the temperature will drop a good deal.

BRRRRRR~~~Wet Snow
Hey Steve: Yes, I don't think I could handle your Wintertime sunrise/sunset times very well. I guess I should be Thankful for the daylight my area does get. Hope your Winter is a "proper" snowy one.

Late October Greetings Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN

.....25..77F/25C....63F/17.2C..---

.....29..66F/18.8C..34F/1.1C...---
.....30..70F/21.1C..31F/-0.5C..---

This week featured cool mornings, pleasant afternoons, mostly sunny skies and a couple nice t-showers. T-showers were due to passage of a couple Pacific cold fronts (on the 24th & 26th), a dry Canadian cold front (switching winds to the NW and lowering the humidity levels) passed on the 28th. The first freezing minimum of Fall occurred on the 30th--220 days from the last freezing minimum of Spring. Overall Low-abt. 11:45PM-listed for the 26th; Overall Low-abt. 11:28PM-listed for the 28th. Looks like we'll finish the month of October a bit below on rainfall, but we'll be a little above normal for the year. For the upcoming week: a very good chance for T-showers comes early-week with downward-trending temperatures.
For this week--Oct. 24-30--Mena's Avg. Max.: 68.5F/20.2C, Avg. Min.: 44.2F/6.7C.

Wishing ALL a Great Week~~~Wet Snow

This past week was noticeably cooler than the previous one. Scant raintotals were due to Low-pressure (Pacific cold front) just to our south. A dry Canadian cold front passed through late on the 4th. Very windy--for here anyway--on the 3rd & 4th, which added a bite (Northerly breezes) to the already cooler conditions. Otherwise, we had more days of sparkling clear skies with no clouds to be seen. For the week--Oct. 31-Nov. 6--Mena's Avg. Max. is 65.2F/18.4C with Avg. Min. of 42F/5.5C. The local trees continue to be in different stages of colorful Fall Foliage (some trees still mostly with green leaves) and the recent windyness has caused some trees to shed a good deal of their leaves. Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 2nd; Overall Low-abt. 11:53PM-listed for the 4th; Overall Low-abt. 11:28PM-listed for the 5th.
Well, today (Sunday), most of the US went back to Standard Time (as of 2AM). I really don't care for the time-change as the sunset times are much too soon for my liking. For today, Mena's sunrise was at 6:43AM, with a sunset of 5:18PM (YUCK!).
For upcoming week, the temperatures are forecasted to get warmer, with T-shower chances later in the week.

Wishing ALL a Spectacular Week~~~Wet Snow

Wet Snow,

When do fall colours peak in Arkansas?

In Edmonton, fall colours generally peak in late September. But now most trees, especially the American elms, are quite leafless and the grass is already turning brown. It's also extremely dry - it hasn't rained or snowed at all so far since late October.

This week had pleasant warmth (wore T-shirts most of the week) with a good cool-down at the end. Had light patch of pre-frontal rain on the 11th; the Pacific cold front came through just after dark (near 6PM) on the 12th. Kinda disappointed as there was no thunder/lightning with the frontal passage (areas to the north copped larger raintotals as the rainarea was pretty thin in my area). The 13th felt very chilly-- especially compared to the day previous--clouds broke up in early PM hours, but the sunshine offered little warmth (the morning minimum was 41F/5C). Overall Low-abt. 11:41PM-listed for the 12th; Overall Low-abt. 9:44PM-listed for the 13th. Quite a number of local trees continue to have spectacular Fall colors on their leaves. Was so mild that I even saw a few flies a few days ago. A couple of the days had a humid "Springlike" feel to them. Heard some potentially bad news: the long-range forecast for my area calls for possible freezing rain near the Thanksgiving holiday (the 25th). I'm Really hoping (& Praying) that my area escapes any freezing rain/ice this late Fall/Winter. Forecast for upcoming week calls for cooler temperatures (maximums around 60F/15.5C with morning minimums in the 30s to low 40sF/1-6C) and a good shower chance for early week.

Wishing ALL a Most Pleasant Week~~~Wet Snow

Just wondering, how rare is snow in Mena during November?

PS, happy Thanksgiving wishes for Thursday. Hopefully your area will avoid any freezing rain.

.....20..59F/15C....44F/6.6C....---

For the week--Nov. 14-20--Mena's Avg. Max.: 59.4F/15.2C; Avg. Min.: 37.4C/3C. This past week felt chillier than the previous one, even though the maximums were near seasonal averages. Showers on the 15th were due to Low-pressure to our south; a Pacific cold front--vortex of the Low just to my North--passed through late PM on the 16th. Despite the dribs-and-drabs amounts with recent shower activity, we've been through a fairly dry stretch for awhile; and it's possible we could finish the year with below-normal rainfall here (if the rainamounts don't pick up a bit). Still good to see a number of songbirds still in the area (inc. the neighborhood mockingbird), I've heard--but not seen as yet--a few flocks of geese flying overhead (likely headed South). Overall Low-abt. 11:40PM-listed for the 18th. The clouds never broke up (as forecasted) on the 20th; hence that day was cloudy with fog and mist--the fog only getting lighter by later in the day. Although no fronts were in the area, the conditions reminded me of a Warm Front, especially as the temperature continued to rise through the nighttime hours--the Overall High on the 20th happening near 11:45PM. Under similar conditions--but with less fog--the minimum this (Sunday) morning was a balmy 58F/14.4C.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for unseasonable warmth (maximums could be near/above 70F/21C) ahead of a strong cold front which will drop the maximums to near 40F/4C on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday). Hopefully we can get some good rain amounts from the front (as of now, there is no mention of freezing rain for Thursday).

Wishing ALL a Most Excellent Week~~~Wet Snow

.....26..48F/8.8C...24F/-4.4C..---

For the week of Nov. 21-27, Mena's Avg. Max.: 56.7F/13.7C; Avg. Min.: 35.2F/1.7C.
This past week featured good amounts of unseasonal warmth followed by a pretty fair cool-down. (Pre-frontal) fairly strong Southerly winds (and solid cloudcover) kept the nighttime temperatures elevated and added a "Springlike" feel to the conditions. A Pacific cold front passed on the 23rd, this front then retreated NE'wards as a Warm front on the 24th. A very strong Pacific cold front passed through on the 25th (Thanksgiving), giving very miserable conditions: Somewhat heavy rain, NNW winds and steadily falling temperatures [temperatures actually fell from 69F/20.5C at 12:01AM on the 25th to the morning minimum of 24F/-4.4C on the 26th]. On the 25th, the temperature fell from 67F/19.4C at 6AM to 54F/12.2C--Daytime Maximum--at 7AM (sunrise). Thankfully, the precipitation ended before temperatures fell below freezing--so I escaped any freezing rain/ice. Parts of NW Arkansas did have very light snow amounts/flurries. The conditions felt even cooler compared to the warmth of the previous days. Spotted a flock of geese flying overhead on the 24th--they were Southbound, flying into a fairly strong headwind. Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:23PM-listed for the 23rd; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:58PM-listed for the 25th. The rain amounts were very welcome as Mena is still below-normal on rain for the month. Sadly (for me), there was no thunder/lightning with the shower activity. The maximum (74F) on the 24th could be the warmest day for the rest of the year (although 70F+ maximums in [early-to-mid] December can happen).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for very good T-shower chances (another Pacific cold front) for Monday (tomorrow), followed by mostly dry conditions and nearer-normal temperatures.

I thought Arkansas didn't get any weather systems from the Pacific as the Rockies block all the moisture? Most of the snow that the South receives is from deep N'ly (Arctic) fetches.

Hello Snow4Sydney:

The Pacific cold fronts we get originate from the Pacific Ocean--hence the modified air mass means the temperature drop won't be that great and the T-showers will have larger moisture totals (as opposed to Canadian cold fronts). The Rocky Mountains do disrupt these easterly-moving systems, but the systems re-organize just east of the Rockies and continue their eastward movement.

[The Canadian/Arctic fronts we get (airmass originating over cold land), have a much larger temperature contrast, but much smaller precipitation amounts.]

Cheers~~~Wet Snow
P.S. The larger Wintry precipitation (snow, freezing rain) amounts that my area gets are from Southerly-tracking Low-pressure systems (Pacific cold fronts), the vortex of these Lows come ashore in S California and track NNE through central Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and over my area.

For the past week--Nov. 28-Dec. 4--Mena's Avg. Max.: 54.4F/12.4C; Avg. Min.: 33.2F/0.6C.
This week featured more above-normal warmth with a brief shot of colder air. A Pacific cold front passed through early day AM on the 29th, giving a nice thundershower. The next day felt very raw indeed--especially with gusty & chilly WNW winds. The lower humidity levels made for some larger daily temperature spreads. A dry Canadian cold front passed through on the evening of the 4th. I was wearing a T-shirt on the 4th, until the front passed, the winds switched to gusty Northerly and the temperatures started falling. All-in-all, not a bad week temperature-wise for late November/early December as it could be a lot worse. Pre-frontal warm Southerly winds gave a boost to the afternoon maximums on a few of the days. Overall Low-abt. 11:12PM-listed for the 29th (the morning minimum was a balmy 54F/12.2C); Overall Low-abt. 11:50PM-listed for the 4th (morning minimum of 48F/8.8C). The minimum this (Sunday) morning was a cool 27F/-2.7C. Most of the local trees are bare of leaves, giving a "Winterlike" appearance to the landscape. This recent Canadian cold front will keep very cool conditions over my area for the next number of days: For the upcoming week, our maximums will be in the lower 40s to near 50F/6-10C with minimums below 30F/below -1C. I suppose the colder air will put us in more of a holiday mood, but makes it hard to get out of a toasty warm bed on those chilly mornings. Can't believe how fast this year has flown by!

Wishing ALL a Most Relaxing Week~~~Wet Snow

Folks:

Well, my area is forecasted to see a rain/snow mix for the overnight hours--as a Southerly-tracking Low pressure (Pacific cold front) is to our South. Fort Smith (AR) radar shows precipitation entering my area, but nothing hitting the ground yet. Now, at 5:45PM (Tue.) KENA reports the temperature at a chilly 44F/6.6C; with a fair chance of rain/snow/light snow for overnight and early Wednesday morning (forecast minimum in the morning around 28F/-2.2C). As much as I love Snow, I really don't care to see just flurries.

Fairly chilly this late-Autumn week. For the week of Dec. 5-11, Menas' Avg. Max.: 52.5F/11.3C; Avg. Min.: 31.4F/-0.3C. Low-pressure to our south caused the light showertotals. The precipitation ended before the temperature fell below freezing, so no snowflurries for late PM on the 8th. A powerful (dry) Canadian cold front passed through in the late AM hours of the 11th (I noticed on the US METAR map that a few towns in Iowa had NW winds gusting well over 50mph/80kph+; wind chills there were well below 0F/below -18C). NW winds here very strong and gusty (gusts at the Mena Airport 30mph+/48kph+; fairly gusty winds for my area) from early PM hours of the 11th (with falling temperatures) and such winds continue now (3:38PM Sunday)--glad we don't have such strong & persisting winds here very often. I notice that the wind toppled a steel-framed (Christmas-light laden) Christmas tree in front of the Mena depot (winds also took my Welcome mat and blew it under my car in the carport; winds were constantly whistling around the corners of my house). At 7AM this (Sun.) morning, KENA reported a temperature of 24F/-4.4C with a Wind Chill of 10F/-12.2C (NW wind at 20mph/32kph; don't get Wind Chills that low very often here). Parts of Minnesota, Iowa and W Illinois had Blizzard conditions overnight and heavy snow collapsed part of the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN; a number of stretches of Highways were closed as well). Wind Chills in the NW part of Arkansas this morning were barely above 0F/around -15C. Our forecast maximum here today will be just above freezing. The heavy winds should abate in the later PM hours and it'll be very chilly in the morning (forecast minimum in the morning could be near 15F/near -9C here).
Pre-frontal warm S/SW winds caused the overnight temperatures to be nearly steady on the 10th/11th: The maximum on the 10th was abt. 5PM and remained around that mark for the remainder of that day; the Maximum on the 11th was at 12:01AM and at the 7:14AM sunrise--not long after, the temperature began to fall [accompanied by those chilly & gusty winds] and the Overall Low was abt. 11:42PM.
If it's this cold and still (barely) Autumn, I'd hate to see what Winter will have in store (LOL).
Forecast for upcoming week will have a fair warm-up maximum-wise with top temperatures near 55F/~13C by Wednesday, with mostly dry conditions for the week.

Wishing ALL a Most Blessed Week~~~Wet Snow

I saw that video of the stadium roof collapsing in Minnesota on Sunday. Incredible stuff, thankfully there wasn't a game on at the time.

How long will the stadium be out of use whilst the damage is repaired?

I'm amazed at the severity of the conditions that NFL players can play in. Is there a limit where they will say it's too dangerous to play?

PS, best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
