Timing of the change on the weekend looks poor in GFS, especially for northern SEQ with the change reaching the border early evening. Some fairly decent CAPE predicted though peaking near 2000 near the border at 4pm. Steering winds look W-NW so maybe not so good for pushing storms ahead of the change.

Some patchy stuff starting to form out west around Toowoomba. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Nice little cells around Urbenville! Looks to be chalked full of hail. Moving towards the east northeast, will it make it to the coast?
Also very small cells west of here starting to fire up. Will be watching...
Only need another 10.5mm for an average month.

70 kph gust in that storm that hit Beaudesert and about 28 mm of rain.

Friend who lives north of Beaudesert sent video of gutters and downpipes over flowing and heaps of small hail.

Gday all,
Im surprised a thread hasn't been started up yet for these potential thunderstorms through until Sunday? It's almost like everyone's been caught off guard. Anyway, hopefully we see some action over the next few days!
Cheers 👍

3.5 cm hail at Marburg according to BOM STW warning.

We don't often get decent-sized hail in SEQ at night, especially not this time of year.

Plus 17Z Brisbane temp trace not as unstable as yesterday. Needs a surface temp of 28 to kick things off properly, whereas yesterday it was 26. Will see what 23Z one says soon.

Again I must say, Iím a little puzzled at the lack of interest in this event. Hasnít been any posts in here for a few hours now, so I assumed maybe a thread had been set up for it by one of the many wx gurus. I canít seem to find one anywhere. Anyhoo, plenty of potential I feel over the next few days like we saw in pockets yesterday. A nice early start to the season! 👍

Not really an event as such, as this is the start of the normal storm season and hopefully there will be a few episodes over the next few months.

Started a new thread as we are in the middle of a pretty decent early season storm outbreak.

Yesterday saw some great storm activity with lots of cells dumping small hail, heavy rain and strong winds in southern parts of SEQ and in the Brisbane Valley. Some highlights were 3.5 cm hail at Marburg, non-BOM measurement of 67 mm in 10 minutes at Wanora (south of Fernvale), 70 kph gust at Beaudesert and large accumulations of small hail in the GC hinterland and Brisbane Valley.

I'd particularly like to hear some thoughts about how this set-up was able to deliver line after line of hailstorms for the GC region for almost 8 hours well into the night.

It looks like today and tomorrow are hit and miss days before the big climax on Saturday. Upper trough comes across in the afternoon and evening bringing a line of storms. Mids and uppers are cold, but cloud cover all day and lower surface temps will probably dampen things. Moderate instability across SEQ and steering from around NW/W. Unfortunately the southerly change looks to be delayed until around midnight. We might get a 2nd round of storms at night but we won't get that lovely triple point setup at prime time.

Mod edit: I have just moved 34 posts relevant to this event from the Day-to-Day thread :-)

A friend in Cooran still had unmelted hail in her yard this morning, and I saw a photo on facebook of huge amounts of hail still on the ground near inverell. The storm that hit Cooran looked to be heading straight for my place but veered west at the last minute.

There's another black cored cell heading up the Mary Valley now.

Nice work CJI!

Gympie hailstorm vid from earlier this evening:

Saturday's storm chances locally look like being determined by what time the southerly change ends up moving through. GFS and EC currently have it through by late morning, meanwhile ACCESSR delays it until the early afternoon (which would be the more ideal of the two).

Well, I just read today's forecast for WBB and it is concerning.

"Medium chance of showers inland during this afternoon and evening, possibly severe in the south".

WTH is a severe shower. I'm cool with heavy and light, but severe! Is this some sort of new tin roof piercing rain drop? or does it just really sting when it hits?

I think we should be told.

That's because the timestamps are in UTC (GMT) since using one standard time reference for all locations regardless of timezone makes things far easier with many meteorological and aviation products. Simply add 10hrs to the UTC time to convert to AEST (or 11hrs for EDT). For example, 2300 UTC Thursday = 9am Friday AEST.

The sounding typically becomes available on the web after around 10:45am or so depending on when the balloon bursts or when the Bureau observer's finished quality control editing of the sounding (the raw realtime sounding is available as the balloon's still going up but isn't available on the public web).

Hi Steve the soundings are always in Zulu or UTC time which we are +10hours. Soundings are usually available all going well and data has been collected around 1100 . They usually only release one a day as a cut back but on potential storm days they will do another in the afternoon.

Just been sitting back a lurking for a while. Decided it was time for a bit of chill out.

Models look terrible for tomorrow, especially compared to yesterday. Still a decent set-up for slow-moving hail dumps though.

At least there's frontal support tomorrow unlike today's crap. Wouldn't be surprised to see a line of storms move across border areas and possibly scrape southern SEQ into the late afternoon/evening even though the SE change itself doesn't come through until overnight.

The change proper is late, especially for northern parts of SEQ. But some level of troughing/convergence running through western parts even from mid day on should be able to get a decent line of storms going. Cape of 1500+ near the coast seems very good for late Sept? And should help support the movement of storms towards the coast ahead of the convergence/troughing/SEchange.

There were actually localised storms near the western and northern parts of our region. Shear was also weaker which caused most storms to be shorter-lived pulse storms.

This was in complete contrast to say Wednesday which featured much deeper moisture, much stronger shear and steering winds from the genesis regions.

Wednesday didn't have much going against it at all. We had pretty cold air aloft which together with the mild moist onshore flow helped with the instability, very good moisture to depth which helped a lot, strong shear which likely helped with the longevity of some of the storms, and clearer breaks in the morning cloud cover which helped with the heating. No clearly-defined synoptic triggers such as a front though so airmass thunderstorms were the result with some being strong. The soundings for that day looked good for a healthy scattering of storms in southern parts of our region.

I think Saturday will still feature storms in our region, some possibly becoming strong, despite a number of niggling potential complicating factors that could interfere.

These potential complicating factors include ACCESS-C trying to move some patchy activity through early in the morning while EC doesn't have much (but both have a mix of clear & cloudy areas in our region in the morning) and a couple of shallow isothermal layers or perhaps even inversions aloft which updrafts will have to overcome.

But shear is strong particularly in the south so if any activity got going, there'd be the potential for severity. Another possibility is that storms might try to start forming a bit of a band or squall line (and I think Mega mentioned this earlier as well) as per ACCESS-C's current scenario due to the wind profile with the deep slab of westerlies aloft.
If extensive storms do manage to occur, it's something I'd have to consider given that I'm going to try and go to Riverfire.

But one of those setups where any one of those complicating factors could make a fairly big difference.

Also looking like some locations (mainly in the north) could also see pretty enhanced rainfall from convection/thunder embedded in the post-frontal showery/rainy mess anytime between the wee small hours of Sunday morning and Sunday evening (also resulting in a very cool day on Sunday).

Thanks Ken. I also had to put my Dad into an aged care home and that takes a lot out of you, so I was snapping pretty badly. 🤯

One thing I like if things can pull off and come together tomorrow afternoon/evening is the cold upper temps of minus -44įC. We could see a repeat of the hail drifts that looked like snow in some places. I always liked the old warm fronts colliding with the cold changes especially the one set for this Sunday.

See how it pans out.

A high-based thunderstorm came through here late tonight. Anywhere from Hat Head in the south to Urunga/Bellingen in the north was in the line of storms, with the highest concentration of lightning around the Macksville/Nambucca area. Small hail was reported and photographed at Nambucca Heads.

Guess thats one thing I'm not too keen on today is where yesterday there was some low level moisture but very a very shallow layer. Then today its the oppisite dry low levels but moisture is available in the mid levels which would keep things high based and even though thunderstorms will occurr I have my doubts that it will be epic.

Yea Ken mentioned on the last post about inversion. Coastal areas will be more subject to low level capping, thats what I was getting at in my post that I feel storms might form above that layer and be high based.

I watched that storm roll through from Cresent Head, had some crawler lightning down here with some very light rain that didn't amount to much. Managed to fire a few shots.

Wynnum Nth 24 hour rain - nil, Event total - Trace.

Noting on Brisbane's 17Z temp trace, middle levels have warmed since yesterday ( more stable ), with a surface temp of around 30C needed to produce and maintain TS locally.

I think most factors look good for a number of locations in SEQ getting a thunderstorm later today with some lucky people getting a strong or severe one.
Should be some showery conditions spreading north from the wee small hours of Sunday morning behind the change & persisting through the day, possibly tending to some patchy rain areas for a time in some areas with locally enhanced falls (aided by the upper trough pivoting up through NSW).

Having said that, if storms do manage to form a squall line (although this depends on adequate low level moisture as well), the dominant threat may be mainly restricted to strong winds... unless the line had decent breaks in it or some discrete cells managed to form in which case, larger hail would be a greater risk in addition to the wind threat).

Soundings suggest many of them will probably start off as high-based ones while they're inland (with the main threat being strong winds) although some might tap into the better low-level moisture as they get close to the coast & put down roots with lower bases.

The partly sunny skies this morning will help.

Just hoping any activity won't be too premature & cause convective overturning... and also hoping it won't come in the form of a big cloudy band which would ruin things a bit.

The WSW steering flow looks reasonable also as does the stronger shear in the south.

The overnight timing of the change isn't ideal but I'd rather it come through late than too early. The latter often shuts down storm potential altogether.

As for capping, there looks to be some of the usual low level capping near the coast but as is often the case with these kinds of setups where you have reasonable steering winds, I don't think it'd be enough to significantly reduce the extent of storms.

Below is a forecast sounding for Brisbane at 4pm this afternoon (ignore most of the severe weather indices in the panels and the analogue matches with past events except for the thermodynamic ones since they're derived from wind profiles in the northern hemisphere & don't apply here) which shows the good moisture aloft and a thunderstorm map:

Storms have formed just east of the ranges and intensifying fast. They're going to have to work hard to become severe as there isn't much room for them to play with, although steering is more SE'ly than E'ly for weaker cells so there will be more land to cover that way.

Looks very scrappy so far, can't say I'm impressed by how the day is panning out. Still lots of time to go. The axis of the upper trough is also flatter so I can see more storms forming after these ones well into the evening.

Don't these cells look like a mess. Not even sure they are strong enough for small hail dumps.

Not confident we'll see anything here from the current storms. It's the old inland + north/south of Brisbane show.

The 64km radar is messy, but that cell is possibly splitting?

Back to sunshine & some cloud. Still warm, feels humid & almost calm. Plenty time left to build round 2.
Only the entree I think.

Storm over the Northside on radar has a v notch and hook on the sweep. 64K Stappy picks it up nicely. Will post shortly as I am my iPad. Have to reset all my links up.

Sorry for the grainy snap. I have had to re-log into all my links and took so long to fire everything up again.

As the storm approached the strong seabreeze chocked the storm. It really had the potential and looked pretty good.

Latest sweep shows a nice thick black core over Narangba that indicated rotation as it hit the bay.

Second job now is to get all the camera gear out and reset it for storm season and start going back to the vantage points. It s too hard to chase around here with all the road works and how Far East we are. The last chase was great but 180 minutes to get back home just as I hit Brisbane was it for me. 🤯

Happy storm season everyone. 🌧😉😄⚡️🌪

In Wynnum West for a few days. About a 1 minute deluge with pea size hail. Many rumbles and 1 good CG. Nice for late September.
Looks like Warwick and surrounds have missed out by a long shot.

Nice photo Eddy. I did wonder last night if you'd captured anything from your current holiday location.

CG captured at Woolgoolga around daybreak:

Wall cloud on the Coffs Harbour airport cam earlier this afternoon:

Looks more threatening than it was showing on the radar at that point in time (radar images from Weatherzone Layers). However, the storm did strengthen significantly at sea, and by 2:30pm was maxing out the radar.

I can hear the rain/hail down the road, but only 2 drops at my place. I was a bit late getting some shots, so missed the better CGs, but may have a couple of shots to upload later.

It's currently all sheet lightning at the moment.

I wasn't expecting the cell to intensify so quickly, so I missed most of the crawlers on approach. Still a great show for September though.

What a difference a year makes.

Sept 30th last year ( the day our cat died from snake bite with numerous snake sightings in previous weeks around the suburb ) and after a very warm overall month - the local max temp was 35 deg. Today the temp will be flat out making 20-21 locally, with no snake sightings so far due to the cooler than average month.

91km/h wind gust at Cape Moreton . Pretty strong continual winds as this storm enters the bay and coastal suburbs.

Thanks Tweedstorm and Ken!

Had a good storm here in Marcoola around 10am. Really torrential, was like a ghost town with no sign of the holiday makers staying in the resorts. Already upto 61mm here with more to come by the looks of it.

I've noticed that the BoM has changed its morning forecast at 8.56am upgrading the previous forecast from slight chance of a thunderstorm in the morning to a chance in both the morning and afternoon. Well, we've had a storm here already. I noticed last week it had during one evening the slight chance of showers for the hinterland where it absolutely teemed down. I do like how they are prepared to adjust the automatic forecast when it obvious that it is off the mark.

A non-event for the Warwick area. Now 1.5 years straight of no significant rainfall. No storms to report and aside from a couple of showers over the past 18 months, it has been bone dry.

Reports of small hail and shed roofs blown off in Childers. Looks like it will run out of puff before it gets to us but we're getting a good drop.

I have to go in and access damage early tomorrow morning. One of my staff that lives in Childers phoned me and said it is worse than the storm a couple of years ago. Trying to contact people on Grand Final Sunday, on a long weekend has been challenging to say the least...

11mm for me today and 0.6mm yesterday.
At least the dust has now settled and the bush fire risk has dropped a bit.
Fingers crossed a drop or two more later next week.

Great photos everyone smile

Here's another one of my own below - this time of an EA-18G Growler doing a high-speed low-level pass over the Brisbane River as the sun set yesterday. I thought the faint crepuscular rays added a nice touch. We were really lucky with the weather with most of the storms only just clipping us in the CBD (but did get a fair bit of thunder & spectacular lightning as a backdrop to the fireworks).
Also below are the lightning strokes detected over the last 48hrs up to 6pm this evening via Landgate (orange = 24 to 48hrs ago, red = last 24hrs).

Now back to keeping an eye on the potential rainfall from later this week...

Thanks SB, love the 4th link down...great little clip showing the ferocity of that cell.

I was really, really surprised by today's activity over the SC/WBB especially given the change moved through pretty early up here (just after lunchtime) and even earlier (mid-morning) on the SC. I hope it's a sign of things to come this season but I'm not holding my breath.
