Hello Ozthunder & All:

Pacific cold fronts enter the US, usually first hitting the northern Pacific coast. As they traverse Eastwards, they can be somewhat disrupted by the Rocky Mountains, but they usually quickly re-gather themselves on the other side of those Mountains. The Pacific cold fronts which hit the S coastal areas of California (the vortex of the Low-pressure, which moves in a ENE direction, which is also called a "Southerly Tracking Low Pressure") mainly holds together while crossing the Rockies as the mountaintops are at lower elevations in those southern areas.

The main differences between Canadian/Arctic and Pacific cold fronts (at least in my area):

Pacific cold fronts--orginiating over the Pacific ocean--have a good amount of moisture with them, and the frontal passage causes less of a drop in temperatures (those "Southerly-Tracking Lows" [in Wintertime] give my area of the US the best chances to see accumulating snowfall [freezing rain, as well], as the vortex of the Low-pressure would pass over my area [or just to my South], which would be the colder and snowier sector of the system). Temperatures rebound fairly quickly after passage of these fronts. Winds with these fronts--in my area--usually from W/WNW. Our heaviest rain events usually occur when a Warm Front (moving NE) gives our area good rains and then is followed--a few hours later--by the trailing Pacific cold front (this double dose of good rains is what I like to call a "double whammy").

Canadian/Arctic cold fronts--originating over cold/dry land, are fairly limited in the moisture category. These type fronts are a common feature in our Wintertime. Passage of these fronts can cause rapid and dramatic temperature drops (accompanied by gusty & frigid N/NW winds and light amounts of Snowfall). If this type of cold front is strong enough, it can plunge my area in the deepfreeze and we can stay below freezing (below 0C) for a few days in a row (and rarely we can have minimum temperatures below 0F/below -18C). These fronts are also known as "Polar Fronts" and "Siberian Expresses". In my area, Pacific fronts: Thundershower cells will strike my town usually moving from SW to NE (while the cold front/rain area pushes Eastwards), with Canadian fronts, the precipitation hits my area more from the NW. The mountainous terrain--esp. to the north of my town--often slows down the advance of the shallow layer of heavy & colder air.

Ozthunder: I enjoy reading your very interesting posts as well.
I hope this explanation has been helpful.

.......23..82F/27.7C..60F/15.5C..---
.......24..79F/26.1C..62F/16.6C..---

For the week of May 18-24: Mena's Avg. Max.: 78.4F/25.7C; Avg. Min.: 58.0F/14.4C.

This--totally dry--week featured warm & humid-feeling conditions. The first few days of the week started with cloudy/mostly cloudy mornings giving way to mostly sunny skies by the early PM hours. The last few days of the week saw more cloudcover in my area as a Stationary front has been meandering along the Arkansas-Missouri border (and edging slightly Southwards). Saw my first mosquito of the year while I was doing some yardwork on the evening of the 23rd. Beforehand, it'd been very nice to do yardwork this Spring without being bitten by mosquitoes, chiggers or to be bothered by gnats. Otherwise, it was a fairly unremarkable week.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for more humid conditions with similar temperatures with an almost daily 30-50% chance of showers/thundershowers.
Monday (tomorrow) is the Memorial Day holiday here in the US (the unofficial start to the Summer/Vacation season).

.......31..78F/25.5C..68F/20C....1.00"/25.4mm

For the week of May 25-31, Mena's Avg. Max.: 80.1F/26.7C; Avg. Min.: 60.0F/15.5C.

The main weather feature for the week was a large Upper-Level Low Pressure, which slowly spun Eastwards through my area (circulation/rain areas showing up very well on Doppler Radar), this Low was responsible for the shower activity during the week. The only thunder heard, was a few rumbles when the front circulation (of the Low) passed my area (showers heading from South to North)on the 27th; otherwise, the showers were "tropical" in nature: short (but sometimes heavy) showers, followed by peeks of sunshine before the next cell arrived. After the Low passed to the East of my area, the shower cells hit my area from the NE, E & SE (around the backside circulation of the Low)--which are fairly unusual directions for my area to get rain from. The showers and persistant cloudcover made for some fairly narrow temperature spreads, not to mention higher humidity levels.
Overall High-12:01AM & Daytime Low-12:23PM-listed for the 27th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for much drier conditions and a good warm-up, with tops well above 80F/26C+.

For the week of June 1-7, Mena's Avg. Max.: 81.8F/27.6C, Avg. Min.: 61.7F/16.5C.

This past week featured plenty of warmth, humidity and cloudcover. Cloudcover (& the thundershower on the 6th) was courtesy of a Stationary Front which has been meandering around the Arkansas-Missouri border (and sagging slowly Southwards). Most of the mornings started cloudy/mostly cloudy and giving way to less cloudcover in the early PM hours.
Daytime Minimum (during thundershower)-12:29PM-listed for the 6th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for similar temperatures, with very good Thundershower chances for the start of the week (5:17PM Sunday here currently and I've copped 3"/76.2mm rain so far, in early AM Thundershowers. We had Thundershowers for almost 4 straight hours early this morning, with MANY Very Loud & Close lightning strikes. It's been a while since we've had such prolonged loud lightning hits; more rain is on the way--as the Stationary Front has finally pushed through my area--as my area is under a Flash Flood Watch until 7PM on Monday).

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE........HIGH.........LOW..........RAIN
Jun...8..75F/23.8C..64F/17.7C..3.00"/76.2mm
........9..73F/22.7C..65F/18.3C..1.05"/26.6mm

.......13..81F/27.2C..64F/17.7C..---
.......14..81F/27.2C..60F/15.5C..---

For the week of June 8-14: Mena's Avg. Max.: 83.5F/28.5C; Avg. Min.: 63.4F/16.8C.

This past week featured plenty of cloudcover, humidity & showers.
The rain on the 8th was due to a Pacific cold front that finally moved through our area (very slow moving). The rain on the 9th & 10th was due to that cold front returning over our area as a Warm Front and being followed by another Pacific cold front. The light rainshower (small, scattered shower cells) on the 12th was due to another Pacific cold front. As you can see--by the narrow daily temperature spreads--there was plenty of cloudcover: the mornings starting out cloudy, giving way to mostly cloudy/partly cloudy afternoons, with plenty of humidity (aided by somewhat gusty Westerly & Southerly breezes). It does look like the "Bermuda High" is starting to have a grip on the weather in our area of the US.
Overall High--12:01AM--listed for the 8th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for similar temperatures with 20-30% shower chances (heating) and plenty of humidity.

For the week of June 15-21, Mena's Avg. Max.: 85.2F/29.5C; Avg. Min.: 64.7F/18.1C.

Yet another "carbon-copy" week of mugginess, cloudy/mostly cloudy mornings followed by partly cloudy/mostly sunny skies in early PM hours, plenty of humidity with good Southerly & Westerly breezes; this has been our weather-pattern for the month thus far and no changes are in sight.
The rainamount was from spotty thundershower activity caused by heating/instability.
Summer officially arrived here in the US/NH on the 21st.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for similar conditions with fair (40-60%) chances of thundershower activity (heating).

For the week of June 22-28, Mena's Avg. Max.: 86.7F/30.3C; Avg. Min.: 66.2F/19.0C.

Yet another week with high humidity, a good amount of cloudcover and narrow daily temperature spreads. Rain on 23rd was due to a Pacific cold front finally just pushing past my area; this front--shortly afterwards--completely washed out and (with the added moisture/humidity) enhanced the chances for "heating" showers. My area caught the edge of a small heating shower on the 27th (Trace of rain). These showers did cause good amounts of rainfall in other areas (as they were rather slow-moving). Again, cloudy/mostly cloudy mornings would give way to partly cloudy/mostly sunny conditions in the early PM hours. Other heating showers missed us just to the West and North.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warmer tops, reaching 90F+/32C+ and mornings around 70F+/21C+ and continuing (20% or so) chances for heating showers.

Hi Wet Snow

I have noticed that all minimum temperatures bar one have failed to drop below 68F/20C over the last few weeks in Mena. Is this an unusual spell of warm nights for this time of year?
I've looked at the monthly stats for Mena and the average June minimum is around 64F/18C, the same as my towns average January minimum. We only get around 5-7 nights above 20C however during this month and rarely, if ever any higher than 73F/23C (our highest recorded minimum is 78F/25.5C on January 7th 1994).

Cheers, Gus

Greetings GusO (& ALL):

How's it going? Our warmer-than-average minumums are a product of the excess cloudcover that Mena has experienced for virtually the entire month of June, the corresponding higher humidity levels are also a factor (as they keep the overnight/morning hours from cooling-off very much). Also, the S/SW/W winds (sometimes gusty) add to the warmth.

So, yes, we're having a fairly warm spell of minimums lately (such higher minimums would be more typical in the deeper parts of Summer).

I don't know when we've had a month with such little difference between the average maximum & minimum temperatures. I also don't know when we've had so much cloudcover (& corresponding high humidity) for a whole month: I recorded mostly sunny skies (for the whole day) only on June 11, 13 & 30. Days were "carbon-copies" of each other for the most part (maximums in the 80sF [80F/26.6C-88F/31.1C] on 26 days in month).
I don't think they keep track of such things here, but I'd be very interested to see the amount of Sunshine Hours that Mena had in June (as compared to the normal amount).
Summer officially arrived here in the US/NH on June 21st.

For the week of June 29-July 5: Mena's Avg. Max.: 87.8F/31.0C; Avg. Min.: 67.1F/19.5C

This week featured refreshing cooler air with less humidity and a couple good raindumps. A heating shower passed over my area on the 29th; a Pacific cold front pushed through my area on the 2nd and provided the more pleasant conditions (the minimum on the 3rd was only 1 degreeF above the record low minimum for the date). The cloudcover was much less than the previous week, as well. Was nice to see virtually no clouds for entire days.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warmer conditions with tops near or just above 90F/32C+.
The 4th was the Independence Day holiday here in the US.

Hello Folks:

Well, we had quite a rainevent here from Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning; this was due to a rather slow-moving Pacific cold front.
A few rounds of thundershower cells tracked over my area--each round had numerous very close (& loud) lightning strikes. We had thundershowers for nearly 6 hours and lightning striked caused the county's Emergency Communications System (near the Polk County Courthouse) to go down for a time.
I recorded 2.85"/72.3mm rain in less than 2 hours (to 12:01AM) on Tuesday night, I recorded a further 4.80"/121.9mm rain in the early AM hours on Wednesday--for a rainevent total of 7.65"/194.3mm! Radio Station KENA recorded 6.48"/164.5mm rain from 7AM Tuesday to 7AM Wednesday (Mena's average rainfall for the entire month of July is 4.90"/124.4mm).
Yesterday (Thursday), I heard on the local news that a 53FT/16.1M bridge (over the Rolling Fork) on County Road 7 (west of Wickes, in south Polk County)--due to the deluge of rain--is completely gone!!!!

Not a bad rainevent for July!
