For the week of Dec. 26 (2010)-Jan. 1 (2011): Mena's Avg. Max.: 48.7F/9.2C, Avg. Min.: 27.7F/-2.3C. A nice batch of rain this week--especially on the 29th--narrowed our yearly rain-deficit greatly. A Warm front brought the rain late PM on the 28th and through the 29th (my wettest day of 2010). The other light raintotals were due to a fairly strong Pacicic cold front (which passed mid-morning on the 31st). That warm front and attendent cloudcover and warm S/SW winds (post-Warm front) caused nighttime temperatures to remain steady or slowly rise overnight 29th/30th & also 30th/31st (due to pre-frontal cloudcover and warm S/SW winds). The latter part of the week felt unseasonably humid as well. Every so often--due to cloudcover remaining/lingering in the area--the forecast maximum for Mena is missed by a fairly wide margin, such was the case on the 28th as the predicted maximum for Mena that day was 49F/9.4C when in fact the top only hit 36F/2.2C.
Overall Low-abt. 11:19PM-listed for the 26th; Overall High-abt. 10:03PM-listed for the 29th; Overall High-abt. 9:37PM-listed for the 30th; The maximum on the 31st was reached at 12:01AM and abt. 7:48AM and the Overall Low was reached about 11:45PM; Overall Low-abt. 11:35AM-listed for the 1st. The temperatures continued to fall until Mena bottomed-out this (Sun.) morning at a crisp 16F/-8.8C.
Thankfully, the shower-line associated with the strong Pacific cold front--on the 31st--was narrow in my area so we avoided any severe weather (which did happen in NW Arkansas).
What a difference a half-mile/.8kms makes! On the 29th, while I copped that 2.70"/68.5mm of rain--just a half-mile to my south--radio station KENA (the official weather station for Mena) copped less than 1.50"/38.1mm!

Saturday, January 1, 2011: Happy New Year! Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Clear--no clouds below 12,000FT, Temperature: 41F/5C, Dew Point: 23F/-5C, Winds: 360degrees (N) at 8mph/12.8kph, Visibility: 10MI/16.1KM, Barometer: 29.91"/1,012.9mB.

Forecast for upcoming week calls for rising maximums (to more seasonal levels) and fairly scant rainchances.

Wishing ALL an Awesome Week~~~Wet Snow

Hello Folks: (7:03PM Sat.):

Well, the weather in my area could get a bit interesting a little later on. My area--and much of the southern half of Arkansas--will be under a Winter Storm Warning, in effect from 12NOON Sunday to 6AM Monday.
Cold air is in place & a Low-pressure will form (to the south of me) in the Gulf of Mexico--the moisture will flow northwards into the colder air and widespread snow is expected.
The (eastward-moving) speed of the Low will determine how much snow will fall, but the current forecast calls for 3-6"/7-15CM to be common in my area (a period of sleet [frozen raindrops] may precede to snow [commencing around 12NOON]).
Well, all I can say is: Bring It On!

Waitin' For The Flakes To Fall~~~Wet Snow
P.S. The forecast tops next week will be MUCH below-normal, early-week maximums not getting much above freezing.

.....7....58F/14.4C..39F/3.8C...---

For the week of Jan. 2-8: Mena's Avg. Max.: 48F/8.8C, Avg. Min.: 27F/-2.7C.
This week--first full week of 2011--felt a bit warmer overall than the previous week. The mornings were cool and crisp and the afternoons were pleasant with mostly sunny skies. A dry Pacific cold front passed through on the 4th--mainly turning the winds to somewhat gusty WNW. Overall Low-abt. 11:35AM-listed for the 5th.
Well, you just knew that this fairly warm Winter weather wouldn't last and the end of it came today (Sunday). Low-pressure tracks through central Texas and tons of moisture is being thrown northward into the very cold air--hence good snow amounts for much of the Southern US [sadly, some places are having a bout of freezing rain]. Here in Mena, the temperature has been holding steady around the 25F/-3.8C-mark most all day. Radar has shown snow over my area for a time--it just wasan't hitting the ground yet. I noticed the flakes falling around 12:55PM (the flakes are smallish but coming down pretty heavy at times) and just around 5PM (an hour ago), I measured just over 2"/5CM of snow in my front yard. My area--and much of Central/Southern Arkansas is in a Winter Storm Warning (in effect from 12NOON today until 6AM Monday). The snow will taper off and end early Monday AM in my area.
With temperatures (maximums) to remain very cold (near freezing) for much of the upcoming week, there won't be much melting anytime soon.

Wishing ALL a Most Pleasant Week~~~Wet (& Very Happy) Snow

*=rain equivalent of melted snow.
For the week of Jan. 9-15: Mena's Avg. Max.: 48F/8.8C; Avg. Min.: 26.8F/-2.8C.
This past week Mena, all of Arkansas--and much of the S United States--were plunged into the "deep-freeze". Factors came together just right to give my area a decent snowfall on the 9th: NE winds blew very cold air over my area and a southerly-tracking Low-pressure (vortex of Pacific cold front) was to my south. The snow fell for a while--as per radar--before finally reaching the ground. The snow started around 12:30PM; the flakes were smallish and the snow was "drier" than usual, but the snow fell with heavy bursts at times, aided by very chilly NE/E winds. The snow ended in the nighttime hours and I measured 2"/5CM on my front sidewalk (rain equivalent listed above), parts of my front yard had snow 4"/10.1CM deep & KENA officially measured 3"/7.6CM of snow. [I use the sidewalk total as my official total to eliminate any errors from drifting or measuring in grassy areas]. Areas of N Arkansas had no snow at all from this system, while extreme S areas of the state copped upwards of 6"/15.2CM snowfall. After the clouds cleared out, the temperatures really remained frigid for most of the week, under mostly cloudless skies. What little wind we had (NW) just made things colder. On the 13th, the coldest morning minimums in Arkansas bottomed out at 1F/-17.2C at both the towns of Gilbert (Searcy County) and Lead Hill (Boone County). That 4-day stretch of below-freezing temperatures here was the longest such stretch for Mena since January 11-14 in 1997. The Overall High on the 9th was at 12:01AM and the Daytime Maximum (& Minimum) was at the 7:25AM sunrise--as the temperature remained at 25F/-3.8C for virtually the rest of the day (snowing). After the center of the cold dome of High-pressure moved to our east, the winds became southerly and gave us some "thawing out" towards weeks' end. I was Most Happy to escape the bouts of freezing rain/ice that plagued especially parts of Central & South Alabama and points to their east. I was happy for the snow--wish it was more & "wetter"--and hopefully it's just a sign of things to come.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for typical up-and-down temperature profile as a bit of warming will take place before yet another cold front will give us rainshower chances later in the week.

Wishing ALL a Most Pleasant Week~~~Wet Snow

I was just looking at the US METAR map and noiced that at 5:56PM AKST today (Sat.), that the town of Atqasuk, Alaska was at -50F/-45.5C and with a WSW wind at 10mph/16.1kph, that would be a Wind Chill of -73F/-58.3C.

For the week of Jan. 16-22: Mena's Avg. Max.: 48.5F/9.1C with Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C.
The first half of the week was mostly cloudy and virtually all the week was fairly cold. Light raintotal early-week was due to a Pacific cold front (passage early AM on the 18th); TRACE of precipitation on the 20th was from fairly heavy--but brief--Snow Flurries (preceeded by a brief fall of sleet [frozen raindrops]). This was due to another Southerly-tracking Low-pressure (the Low moved fairly quickly Eastwards, giving my area only a brief fall of snow). I do like this current weather-pattern of the succession of these types of Low-pressure, as they give my area the best chances for snowfall. Overall High on the 18th was at 12:01AM and at the 7:23AM sunrise, the Overall Low was abt. 11:47PM; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:59PM-listed for the 20th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued cooler-than-normal maximums with not much in the way of precipitation.

For the week of Jan. 23-29, Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.7F/9.8C; Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C.
Scant raintotal was from passage of a Pacific cold front. This is turning into a fairly dry month and--although we may cop T-showers on Monday night--it looks very possible that Mena will have less than 1"/25.4mm precipitation for January. I figured it would happen sooner-or-later and sure enough, Polk County has been put under a Countywide Burn Ban as of the 29th. After the early-week coldfront passed, the winds switched to Southerly then Westerly (warm/dry), which caused some fairly hefty daily temperature spreads from midweek on (aided by low humidity values). Very warm today (Sun., now 4:40PM) as well, after a cloudy morning (balmy minimum of 56F/13.3C), the clouds mostly cleared out by early PM and we'll likely top-out near 70F/21.1C. Unseasonal warmth this time of year (I even saw a fly today!) only means 1 thing: A powerful cold front is approaching! A fairly powerful Canadian cold front should hit us late Monday PM/early Tuesday AM and our maximums mid-week may fail to reach freezing for a few days. A Low-pressure will skirt S Arkansas and counties in N/NW Arkansas (to the N of my area) are already under a Winter Storm Watch for the likelihood of significant wintry weather. Am unsure what kind of precipitation will hit my area (Really Hoping & Praying we don't cop any freezing rain). The warmth is nice, but you really can't keep "Ol' Man Winter" away for long at this time of year. Overall Low-abt. 11:29PM-listed for the 23rd. I am hoping for some nice thunder rumbles--as such is pretty rare here in Winter.

Wishing ALL A Very Nice Week~~~Wet Snow

Folks:

It's 9:42PM Sunday here--temperature around 52F/11.1C--and I'm hearing thunder rumbles! Radar shows T-shower cells not far to my south--might be heading my way. The thunder is great to hear, along with the lightning flashes. Haven't heard thunder here since December 29th and before that, on November 29th. Hope we get some good rain totals.
Counties in NW Arkansas, much of Missouri, most of E/NE Oklahoma (& adjacent areas) are now under a Winter Storm Warning (for the soon-coming weather system). Could get very interesting over the next few days.

That's some amazing variations in weather over a short period. Earlier in the month, you had snow and sub zero temps, now you've got summerlike warmth. In a few days, you'll be back to winter conditions again.

The rapid change in weather must ensure that the weather never gets boring as there's always something interesting around the corner.

PS, Mena's high of 22.7C/73F on Saturday was hotter than any day recorded in Birmingham last August. The monthly high at Edgbaston (near the centre of Birmingham) in August 2010 was just 22.3C/72.1F.

Hello Steve:

(5:39PM Monday): Yes, a powerful Canadian cold front is poised to soon hit my area. My area is in a Winter Weather Advisory for overnight through Tuesday--for varying amounts of snow and (I hope not) possible freezing rain. Mena's highs are forecasted to be well below freezing/below 0C for both Wednesday & Thursday. A HUGE Winter Storm is fixing to impact most of the US. The colder air hasn't gotten here yet--as sometimes the area mountains slow the progress of the dense shallow-layer of colder air. We've had cloudy, drizzly conditions all day and as of now--5:44PM--KENA reports the temperature at 52F/11.1C.
Looks like some interesting couple days ahead.

Folks:

8:42AM Tuesday here and we're getting heavy sleet (frozen raindrops), with gusty NW breezes. At 12:01AM the temperature was around 44F/6.6C with rain. Had thunder around 7AM with a temperature of 37F/2.7C. Around 8AM, the sleet started and is falling quite heavy (parts of the yard are white from it). The temperature--as per KENA--fell from 32F/0C at 8:17AM to 28F/-2.2C at 8:32AM. I guess the snow will be here soon. Our forecast minimum on Wednesday AM (w/wind) is 16F/-8.8C, our forecast top (w/wind) is forecasted to be only 21F/-6.1C. I've also had over 1"/25mm rain since MIDNIGHT. Hope the freezing rain misses us.
Gusty NW wind is blowing the sleet into the sides of the house. Back porch is getting slick so it'll be a bit tricky to keep the dog (Black Lab) fed and watered.

Wet Snow, did you end up getting any snow in Mena? grin

I saw footage of thundersnow in Chicago on Good Morning America this morning, and looked on YouTube at a couple of videos uploaded of it. Certainly a strange thing to see.

Hello Freeze:

All I copped here in Mena was a period of snowflurries. We got way more sleet [frozen raindrops] than snow. We've a chance for more snow activity overnight into Friday AM.
Another cold one here (Wind Chills near 0F/-18C); after a frigid top yesterday (Wed.) of only 22F/-5.5C--under fair skies--right now (12:21PM Thur.) it's overcast, NE breezes, and only 19F/-7.2C.

Glad to hear you've got some snow, enjoy.

It's impressive how cold Mena can get considering the latitude. One of the benefits of living in a continental climate.

We've only had a couple of brief snow flurries in 2011, a bit disappointing after the bitter cold and snow in December.

It's considerably warmer here, yesterday reached 13C/57F with a low of 10C/50F accompanied by strong southwesterly winds.

PS, Thundersnow does happen in the UK, although it's not a regular occurance.

For the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5: Mena's Avg. Max.: 51.4F/10.7C, Avg. Min.: 27.8F/-2.3C.
This week featured early-week warmth followed by a pretty fair cooldown. Warmth was ahead of a powerful Canadian cold front. The 31st was cloudy and drizzly, the cold front passed through--and the rain began--very late PM on the 31st. On the 1st: The temperature at the 7:15AM sunrise (Daytime Max.) was 37F/2.7C, with rain continuing; around 8AM sleet [frozen raindrops] began to fall (as per KENA, the temperature dropped from 32F/0C at 8:15AM to 28F/-2.2C at 8:32AM). The sleet fell pretty heavy at times, parts of the ground were white from it; the precipitation ended as a period of light snow flurries. Had very cold and dangerously low (at times near 0F/-18C) Wind Chills--gusty NW winds--from the 1st to midday on the 2nd. Had brief period of snowflurries early AM on the 2nd. Thankfully the brutally cold NW winds abated early PM on the 2nd. Had a Low-pressure pass just to our South on the 4th: Snow began falling around 5AM and continued until near 3PM, after a let-up, snow fell lightly around 4PM (for just a little while) as the back edge of the Low-pressure circulation crossed my area. All up, I copped 4"/10.1CM Snow, KENA officially recorded 5"/12.7CM Snow--a very nice snowtotal that I'm very happy with (I went for a 2+mile/3km+ walk in the lightly falling--and very peaceful--snow; the temperature was around 25F/-3.8C with no wind). Temperatures warmed above freezing on the 5th, ahead of another approaching cold front (most of the snow has melted, as it is well-above freezing today as well--Sunday at 3:21PM). Quite an eventful week weather-wise. Also had a T-shower cell to the S of Mena on the 30th--thunder rumbles were great to hear, especially in Winter. Overall Low-abt. 11:27PM-listed for the 30th; Overall Low-abt. 11:38PM-listed for the 31st; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 9:24PM-listed for the 1st.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a very good chance (70%) for sleet/snow/freezing rain overnight tonight and snow is likely on Wednesday, with more brutally cold sub-freezing maximums.

Bring on more Snow~~~Wet Snow
