BTW just to clarify, I was referring to not issuing a SWW for heavy rain... not the dangerous surf.

Also interesting to note that 00z run the other day which initially confined most of the heavier falls much further north than the 12z run, ended up spreading it back further south.

284mm since the 4th.

Total so far for October 289mm. Currently about 100mm short of last October but still likely the second wettest October on record since 1914.

Ken, do you think BOM would ever give public access to the Upper Springbrook alert? To me, it is such a shame to have such a fantastic site restricted to just what we see on the daily rainfall bulletin. I would love to see historical data for it and to be able to see 15 min updates like many other sites.

After the west coast of NZ and possibly mount read, you would have to think the upper springbrook site would have to be the wettest site in the world south of the tropic of capricorn?

The area near Maleny might give Springbrook a good run for its money. Crohamurst, just to the south, holds the 24 hour record rainfall for Australia at 903mm in 1893.

You can view some all-time record daily/monthly/annual rainfall amounts here: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/extreme/records.shtml

Adam: No idea re if/when the sub-daily rainfall obs on the public site, sorry.

Unless the station is privately owned, then I don't see any reason why the data isn't made available to the public in real time. Why does it need to restricted to BOM? Just seems weird to me that I can get 15 min updates on the dry creeks up here on the downs but you can't get anything like that for Upper Springbrook.

Really interesting radar at the moment.

Not a squall in the ocean and all propergating just on the coast ?? Showers are very short and sharp and heavy.
Anyone care to explain why please ?? Is it just due to heat convection ??

Cheers

Tim

Yea and SE'ly steering winds theres still abit of the weak mid level trough lingering from that low that is offshore. It's probably going to stuff up any good action for us though need it gone so we can get a more NE'ly fetch.

Classic Cairns type weather, humid, Soueasterly winds pushin moisture in land and causing showers on the higher ground.

These setups are pretty common in these types of regimes but moreso around late summer/early autumn. Moist onshore flow (with ESE steering winds aloft) causing onshore showers which then get enhanced as they travel a bit further inland by the modest instability (helped by some heating as well) over land.

Yea I was looking at the setup for later this week, that trough really weakens later on as it moves closer to us and the biggest mid level ridge you've ever seen replaces it. Looks ok for inland areas.
