Looking at the models this morning and the forecast presence of low troughs heading N/W from Vic plus a S/W front the stage is set for some of the best rains this year (hopefully).

By Tuesday morning next (9thOct'18) a 1013 low is nestled between two highs and GFS is on board for Sale receiving 37mm(5 day) and 47mm(10 day) with other parts of Vic also getting good rainfall.

https://www.windy.com/-Show-add-more-layers/overlays?gfs,rainAccu,-38.005,148.195,7,i:pressure,m:cBEakgh

It kicks into gear as the S/W front comes thru' entering Western Vic close to midday Tue9/10 and spreads fairly quickly to the East.

http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/v...it=Refresh+View

The site references are current only until next model updates.

ACCESS also has another rain mass loitering Friday 12thOct'18 so have extended thread to that event also.

Some comments from better informed posters is needed to get a better understanding of what's going on in the thread period smile

Thanks Samboz.

Yesterday AccG was the excited model, today its downgraded, however GFS has picked up the theme:

Who know what will eventuate, at least we at last have a prospect of decent rain.

I head to Merimbula for a break next weekend - surely that will entice a wet follow-up system!

Models have been all over the place with this event, everyday one of the big 3 has it as a big even while the others downgrade it.

Models seems to be downgrading the initial event a bit but upgrading the follow up next weekend. Does look like some will get some nice falls just depends where and how widespread.

Looks rain in Northern Country to middle NSW upper low/trough sit and widespread likely most Victoria Tuesday.

Then rain next weekend strong front shifting W/SW winds.

Hope doesn't downgrade.

The water vapour available over NW to SE Aus looks ample to support this, or the next potential weather system?:

I see on the latest model data at WZ (only AccR/GFS typically available late arvo when I look), shows AccR with rain over elevated areas Tues night (2.5mm for Gippsland), GFS has rain into Gippsland with SE'ly tilt and circa 20mm.

Time will tell, any rainfall is much needed here.

Interesting event to follow and see which model wins, personally my guess would be ACCESS, IMO due to its low resolution GFS doesn't do a great job of differentiating falls b/w the ranges and not.

I'm back in Portland for a bit - going to be an interesting next 24 hours out our way models are throwing up some big numbers.

Quite an strange system, i'm back in Portland atm and dispute raining most of the night and morning we only got close to 5mm, similar story for everyone else it seems, although some better falls around the Wimmera. Models really struggled with the lightness of the rain I think thus all over predicted falls and had significant uncertainty in the lead up. System early next week has a similar look to it so personally wouldn't be surprised if it delivers similar totals despite models current predicting larger falls.

Woke this morning very strong unusual see Gusty SE/E winds other way round.

Seem Slim High Pressure combine with upper Low in NSW creates powerful winds.

Ended up over 21mm can see on BOM rainfall report that over 30mm on the mountain and Mt William out west was over 30mm as well. pretty widely spread catch in the 10-24mm range though mostly at the lower end of that range. Key to next weeks possible is how dry it gets inland. IF there is less to overcome will add mm to the event. Good news is after the September pattern models are at least throwing up wet scenario's they weren't really doing that then.

Anyone got any updates on the impeding rain Tuesday? We do need a heap more, specialy in rural region's, do somewhat wish it could happen after work hours! But have had very few days of rain, you tend to notice this a lot more, when your out working out in it!

And do hope for the sake of needed rain fall, that it dosen't fizz out. Pre thanks, for any updates if you have them!

This is the most recent run from ACCESSR, i'll post the others when the next update comes out normally around 7pm

Interesting day here in Portland, has sat around 22C all day, completely overcast with a few very light showers.

Tomorrow were looking at 22 again, 10mm of rain and NE winds - very rare.

Great to hear! - let's hope this is the start of a decent stormy spring.

....now an absolutely howling NNE'ly up here in Merimbula.

Huge lightning activity stretching from Central Southern QLD to Shepp. in Vic ATM, by this time next week we could have 15mm or 50mm, be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

Congrats g001 and I'm guessing CA with 17mm is also happier.

Been quite calm re wind here today P, warm and similiar in yr hometown also at lunchtime.

E/Sale 29.3C @ 1223hrs today.

Cleaned spouting out for the downpour but didn't wash the car, don't want to overdue it laugh

Nice storm in Bendigo this afternoon. Really didn't think anything was going to happen. Took a chance and walked from the hospital into town for the morning and got back at about 2 - then the rain came so well planned? Coming home this afternoon massive lightning strike just outside Stanhope. Kyabram got around 6 mm overnight and we have now more than 24 mm since 9 and it's still raining and looks to continue for a few hours more.

liberator you always score well over there , first decent rain for 12 months, l am in Shepparton , we have had 20 mm today and 2 mm yesterday, its a big event over here when we get anything near a inch of rain, pretty sad really when you think about it, 20 mm is just a light shower in queensland
,lol

About a MM in Sale, be lucky to end with 5MM out of this, ACCESS 3 day and 7 day models seem to have fairly differing outcomes if you were planning your day based on them, I realise that the 3 day is 3 hourly V the 7 day 6 hourly.

Disappointing after the forecasts, not unexpected though.

Not a lot of promise this side of next Sat 20th.

edit-Be nice if the northbound rain mass approaching/near Sydney continued to us, ACCESS didn't seem to support that scenario, wait and see grin

For the first time since Saturday, a fine warm calm tranquil morning at Merimbula. As we pack to drive home to Vic presumably through rain.

Happy to report first rumble of the season for Maffra, a weak storm passing nearby from the NNW, a little bit of the fringe rain is falling here, but concrete not completely wet yet.

Light rain encountered from Cann R to Orbost on trip back today.

Found 4mm in the gauge and a max temp of 32C from the change yest. and those couple of warm days here.

Thunder recordings spectrum! - we all love our storms. Samboz apparently rides a treadly up to 133km in search of them smile

Thunder Bob - saw the odd puddle on the side of the road out your way, so guess you got that same 4mm?

I see on the radar page that Traralgon picked up 9mm since 9am, decent storm down that way I guess.

Wow.

That weak high-based storm didnt graze by, it turned into a rain event (with the odd weak high based rumble) for 30 minutes. 28mm here! smile .....a brother recorded 30mm only 500M away. Biggest rain from a thunderstorm at Maffra for 15 years.

Sorry for those in this local area, (as most missed out in this severe drought region), ...amazing - by no way expected (would have been happy just to hear a distant rumble).

Did OK in Sale (East side) also P, 32mm including the 1mm paltry input from y'day.

It bucketed down for about an hour.

One of the longest storms remembered for a while.

Mate to yr N/E says 16mm.

Bldy beautiful. BOM E/Sale Obs hadn't caught up 1/4hr ago, still showing 9.2mm, saw 30mm flashed in radar obs earlier.

Spout overflowed, car got a wash, the southbound "blob" from up Sydney way got here. smile

Finished up with 33mm in the gauge, 32mm out of about an hours storm.

Bright sunny day, scattered cloud here today with just a lightish breeze that went from almost South to North earlier.

Cool and ugly overcast all day of 16c.

Looks like Victoria getting more rain and cool change front keeping heat out.

Yep - looking cool in the outlook, ...and the odd bit of moisture - but nothing significant looming next 8 days?

recording audio of thunder was how I overcame my fear of thunderstorms when I was young. During nocturnal storms, I used to hide under my quilt with a "tunnel" for air.

When I was about 13, I was given a radio/tape recorder. I started recording the thunder and it couldn't be loud enough!

I now enjoy watching the lightning and listening to the thunder.

I enjoy going on storm chases with like minded people.

I try and encourage my visits to Darwin for work during the wet season. More often than not however, the "Great Southern Curse" follows me up there and the storms disappear only to return upon my departure. Grrr...

And we picked up 5mm this arvo as those two narrow cloud bands passed by (all whilst out trying to play golf).

The last cloud band didnt clear, its still thickly overcast and continuing to drizzle here atm.

Great follow up moisture after our lucky storm last Wednesday smile

Another 1.5mm in the evening took us to 6.5mm for yesterdays change (totaling 38.5mm for past week). Things will green up big time in the narrow Newry-Maffra-Sale zone (where last Wednesdays narrow thunderstorm tracked).
