Although it can reduce the extent and severity of thunderstorms, it usually has to be pretty thick and last all through the day to prevent all storms from forming. If the atmosphereís unstable enough (especially when high moisture levels increase the instability), all it takes is a few breaks in the cloud or a partial clearance by early afternoon for storms to fire up.
There was one particularly memorable case I still remember to this day like it was yesterday was one very cool (barely reached 20C) day back in around 2013 when thick gloomy overcast conditions lasted all day with drizzle... yet the dynamical forcing from an approaching shortwave caused a huge squall line to sweep across our region with spectacular lightning, thunder and heavy rain.
On the other hand, if instability and moisture isnít enough, persistent thick cloud cover can win the day and prevent storms.
Not sure if thatíll be the case today (I havenít looked at the setup yet) but there already has been a few storms in northern parts this morning.

Not sure if this is the day you were referring to Ken. It was a humdinger for sure .

I remember that. It was a cold and miserable day. People on here, myself included, had given up on storms for the day.

Still, I've seen many excellent storm days limited by cloud cover. You can still get storm activity, just not anywhere near as severe.

Does that line of storms and showers from Blackbutt to about Boonah appear to be moving in a more easterly direction than the rest of the weather?

I was about to mention that, let's see if it survives the transit over the range.

Great totals Adam Ant. Also glad to see you had a bit of the wet stuff out your way Mad. Looks like more instability your way, so you might not be done yet?
Only 1mm here since we had the 23mm yesterday. Cells around but appear to be slow movers with an overall weakening trend noted. Had a nice heavy cell slide just south of here at 1300 today. Good rumbles too. This beats a heatwave high sitting over our heads for sure. Nice coolish days feel nice as well.

Storm tracker is lighting up quite nicely ATM and also with the squall line, just over Sommerset , it is showing a bit of rotation on the radar and also Doppler. Just need to see if has the steam to keep going and get a bit of a boot as it reaches the inflow from the bay.

Fair amount of scud cloud drifting inland into the storm.

The cell heading towards South Brisbane looks like a better shot to me, the one near somerset looks to be breaking up and weakening.

Happy to be wrong though smile

Looking at the latest Satellite The clouds seem to be going in all different directions in different locations and its very confusing. I thought you get strong shear when we have a upper low?

Still doesn't look like anything special, ie storm chances today.
