How high does the temperature have to get before a heat advisory is issued in Mena?

The met office have a heatwave warning system here, which is issued when there's a good chance of the temperature reaching 30C/86F.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/heathealth/

It was 19C/66F here today under overcast skies, care to trade places with me? Top temp at Birmingham airport this year is 27C/81F.

Hello Steve:

Heat Advisories are issued when the Heat Index is expected to be 105F/40.5C or above. The current Heat Advisory for my part of Arkansas was lifted at 7PM this (Thur.) evening and had been in force since July 30th.
We hit 99F/37.2C for a top yesterday & a similar number today, but a stationary front is near my area and within the past hour light rain has been falling--feels much cooler outside. I don't think this little dab of rain will cause the Countywide Burn Ban (in effect since Tuesday) to be lifted.

Steve, I think your 66F would be a tad chilly for me (esp. for a Summertime reading).

Early August Greetings Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE....HIGH........LOW........RAIN

.....2..101F/38.3C..75F/23.8C..---

.....7...88F/31.1C..72F/22.2C..0.20"/5mm

This week featured heat early-week with scattered T-shower activity and cooler conditions late-week. Heat Indexes early-week were 105F+/40.5C+ and the Countywide Burn Ban remains in effect (in force since the 3rd). Scattered/Isolated T-shower activity was due to a stationary front meandering through the area (and finally washing out; enhancing the coverage of "heating" showers). Some spots got a healthy shower while nearby areas copped nothing. Mena copped the edge of a cell on the 5th which gave the minimal amount. Although I do like HOT summers, the showers and cooler maximums were a refreshing change. August in Mena (tied with January) is our driest average month, so I'll take any rain we can get. Some mornings started out partly/mostly cloudy and giving way to mostly sunny skies in the early afternoon. Forecast for upcoming week calls for warmer temperatures with minimal shower chances. For this period--August 1-7: Mena's average maximum is 91F/32.7C with average minimum of 67.1F/19.5C. Today--August 8th--our sunrise was 6:32AM with sunset at 8:12PM.

Wishing ALL a Most Relaxing Week~~~Wet Snow

Mid-August Greetings Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE......HIGH........LOW........RAIN

Yet another Hot & Sultry week (for this time-period: Aug. 8-14, Mena's Avg. Max. is 90.2F/32.3C with Avg. Min. of 66.7F/19.2C). Daytime Heat Indexes throughout the week were 105F+/40.5C+. Rainfall on the 11th was from a refreshing "heating" T-shower (as with such type showers, the rainfall can be highly localized: While I copped .50"/12.7mm rain, just .6mile/.9km to my South, Radio Station KENA only copped .10"/2.5mm of rain). Mena barely missed being hit by heating T-showers on the 8th (just to our South & East) and on the 13th (just to our East; that T-shower cell did produce some rather gusty--and cool--outflow breezes). Any cloudcover only afforded very brief relief from the hot conditions. Otherwise, the week was fairly unremarkable (as are most "carbon-copy" Summertime weeks). Yet another front is expected to wash-out near my area, hence we've a 30% shower chance for today (Sunday) and tomorrow. Continued hot conditions--with dangerously high Heat Indexes--are in the forecast for this upcoming week.

Wishing ALL a Most Excellent Week~~~Wet Snow

Hello Folks:

As you may know, temperatures of 100F+/37.7C+ in Mena are not really that common. Calendar weeks where the average maximum for that week is 100F+/37.7C+ are even rarer here.

Since 1984, here are the Calendar weeks where the avg. max. for the week in Mena was 100F+/37.7C+:

1985:
July 7-13: 101.5F/38.6C (Data for 4 days)
July 14-20: 100.5F/38C (Data for 4 days)
July 28-Aug. 3: 101F/38.3C (Data for 4 days)
Aug. 4-10: 100.2F/37.8C (Data for 4 days)
Aug. 18-24: 100.3F/37.9C (Data for 3 days)
Aug. 25-31: 101F/38.3C (Data for 4 days)

1993:
July 25-31: 103.1F/39.5C

1995:
July 9-15: 101.1F/38.3C (Data for 6 days)
July 16-22: 101.1F/38.3C
Aug. 27-Sept. 2: 102.5F/39.1C

2000:
Aug. 27-Sept. 2: 101.7F/38.7C

In fact--since 1984--Mena has failed to reach 100F/37.7C for a Yearly High Maximum in: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2009.

Hello Folks:

Well, August has been a fairly HOT month here so far.
The average maximum in Mena for August is 90F/32.2C and for the first 19 days of August, our average top has been 96.7F/35.9C. Temperature-wise, there looks to be no relief in sight for the remainder of the month. By contrast, Mena's average maximum for August 2009 was only 84.9F/29.3C. If the temperatures do hold, this would be our hottest August since 2000.

Although we've had a complete absence of warmth here (monthly high of 75F), Mena's average max of 35.9C would be too extreme for me. I'd settle for an average about 25-27C (77-81F).

Do you wish for cooler weather after such a prolonged period of heat like you've had?

Unusually, the May 23rd maximum of 27C/81F is higher than any day in July and August, and is the equal hottest day of 2010 at Birmingham airport.

More warmth and humidity this week, bookended by a couple good t-showers. Rain on the 15th was from a Stationary front (tail-end of a Pacific cold front). This front actually held together and dropped to the south of us, allowing for some slightly cooler air to penetrate our area. Another Stationary front caused the spotty t-shower activity late day PM on the 21st. The wetness--however slight--was good to see as the hot & dry conditions have caused some leaves to fall and area lawns were starting to show brown patches. We've had 6 days this Summer (all in this month) with maximums of 100F+/37.7C+, which is the most such days in a year here since 2006 (also 6 days that year with tops of 100F+/37.7C+). Upcoming forecast calls for continued hot & dry conditions. So, it looks like the Countywide Burn Ban won't be lifted anytime soon.

*=This was a Daily Record Low Minimum (broke old rec. min. for August 27th of 55F/12.7C in 1985)
This was yet another dry week, with warmth early and a slight cool-down by late-week. The relief was courtesy of a (dry) Pacific cold front which passed through on the 25th. Only evidence of frontal passage was a good bit of cloudcover and cooler NW breezes. The lower humidity values were a relief as well (as the maximums the next couple days didn't seem that warm). For this week--August 22-28--Mena's average maximum is 88.2F/31.2C with average minimum of 64.7F/18.1C. The daylight times are getting noticeably shorter as well; today (Sunday the 29th) our sunrise was at 6:48AM with a 7:47PM sunset. The cooler conditions are nice, but I do want my Summertime warmth back--as we have over 3 weeks of Summer left. Saw more brown patches in lawns & more fallen leaves this week. Even the leaves on the hedgebushes are looking a bit shriveled. Overall Low-abt. 11:41PM-listed for the 25th; Overall Low-abt. 11:50PM-listed for the 26th--so there was a definite taste of Autumn/Fall in the air. Upcoming forecast calls for more seasonable maximums and fair chances (30%+) for scattered/isolated T-shower activity through midweek.

This week had warmth, a cool-down and some useful shower activity. Had a very nice heating shower (S/SW moist windflow ahead of cold front) on the 30th (the most daily rain in over a month). The other light shower activity--spotty T-showers which mostly missed my area--was due to the passage of another Pacific cold front (passage late PM on the 2nd). Overall Low-abt. 11:48PM-listed for the 3rd. This front lowered the maximums and really lowered the minimums and also lowered the humidity levels a good deal. The minimum this (Sunday) morning was a pretty cool 49F/9.4C. The rain on the week was great, but we sure could use more of it (I'd be glad to take some of the flooding Aussie rains off your hands). The cooler conditions were perfect for just about any outdoor activity. Upcoming forecast calls for seasonable maximums with rebounding minimums and good shower chances for mid-week as yet another cold front approaches.
Tomorrow--Monday--is the Labor Day holiday in the US (marks the traditional end to the Summer Vacation/Driving season in the US).

Quite a wet late-Summer week with variable temperatures. Rain on 7th-9th was from Tropical Storm/Depression Hermine (and remnants). My area was on the eastern fringe of the circulation, hence, higher raintotals were to my west (in east-central Texas & Oklahoma). Much of the tropical rainfall was without thunder/lightning. A few rainbands from the NE-retreating circulation on the 9th, did contain some thunder and very heavy rain (as is with such scenarios, you'd have a narrow band of brief, heavy rain and followed by broken clouds which was followed by another rain band). One such rainband gave around 1"/25.4mm of rain in around 30-minutes. (I could barely see to drive through the intense rainfall--went a few blocks to the west and it wasn't raining at all there). Otherwise, the rain was mostly a steady soaker. The rain on the 11th was from a stationary front in the area. This T-shower cell produced some very strong outflow winds before the rain began. (The heavier rain was to our north, as northern parts of Polk County & southern areas of Scott County were in a Flash Flood Warning for a time). The rain on the 7th was sufficient to have the Countywide Burn Ban (in effect since Aug. 3rd) to be lifted. Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 7th (the Low temperature was achieved around 12:15PM) Overall Low-abt. 11:45PM-listed for the 11th. Lower humidity levels caused a nice temperature spread on the 5th. The rain & cooler conditions were a nice break, but I'm ready for more warmer late-Summer temperatures. Forecast for upcoming week calls for seasonable temperatures (maximums in mid 80sF/~30C or so) with only slight rainchances later in the week. Looks like I'll have to mow the yard again.

Wishing ALL a Superb Week~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Hermine came ashore near the Texas/Mexico border and shortly began tracking Northwards--right over the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area--then started moving NNE. Areas around D-FW had TONS of rain and flooding problems. It's not that often that my area gets hit with rain from tropical systems.

Hi, just wondering what the heaviest 24 hour rainfall total is in your records for Mena?

According to the climate-uk website, Edgbaston (near the city centre of Birmingham) recorded 80.8mm (3.18") on June 14th 2007. Not sure if that's an all time record, but it's probably the wettest day in recent times.

PS, many places in the UK recorded their hottest day of 2010 in May. Has Mena ever recorded it's yearly high in May before?
