As that first line of storm is hitting the coast at the moment ....evaporating.....is that capping at play or just lack of inflow moisture ??
Or is it the NSW line taking the fuel ??

Just trying to learn more about these kind of set ups.

Cheers

Tim

I had a look at this afternoon's Brisbane Airport balloon sounding and the low level capping plus quite dry air in the lower levels just above the surface was pretty obvious, consistent with the forecast soundings. So I'd say those two are big factors.

Getting lightning and thunder to my west here now.
Here's a photo taken by James Washington in Moorooka just before and shared to the South Brisbane Storms fb page:

For those playing at home. Check out the ripper little cell on the Namoi radar near boggabri. Got to be summer hard snow falling out of that

Nice solid storm down here. Can hear the wind and rain whipping around outside. Momentary loss of power a few minutes ago.

Nothing but a pleasant breeze here, just got home from a run with an awesome view however, plenty of lightning about.

Seven News talking about large hail and damaging winds for Brisbane in coming hours, so they obviously think something is going to happen.

Alas, the 'Strathpine Gap' is ever present laugh

2.5mm from a high based storm here this arvo. A few big, angry CG's disrupted my arvo mowing session, couldn't get the mower back into the shed quick enough! But apart from that a disappointing afternoon rainfall wise. Still sitting at a respectable event total of 28mm, would really love a proper downpour though, hopefully tomorrow and later in the week can deliver.

guessing we got similar here at Salisbury looking at the rain gauge after juyst getting home now....event total 22.9mm for Salisbury. Hadn't even started raining at Morningside when I left the jobsite at 6.20 p.m, guessing they'll get even less then we received here going by what I drove through (not much in the way of rain) on the way home.

I'm not sure why people expected so much from today or the media hyped up the event so much. The set-up for severe storms (not the garden variety) didn't look that promising on the modelling for most of SEQ for days now, which I've been grumbling about on here since the weekend.

The only thing that surprises me is that NE NSW and possibly GC didn't get much more powerful action. I thought with the triple point and other favourable variables that they might be looking at a very damaging supercell come through, but instead they just got moderate multi-cell 'rubbish'.

This won't be it for the event though. I don't expect there will be severe storms, but there should be plenty more rain in this yet. I was under the 'black core' of the cell near Archerfield which dumped torrential rain and immediately afterward it was warm and humid. There's a ton of energy left in the atmosphere. I expect the southerly will trigger a decent amount of storms and rain as it moves north and stalls overnight and into tomorrow morning. Just don't expect the storms to be severe.

I might add that stupid FB posts like this don't help:

Supercells and very dangerous storms possible today especially in the South East corner of the state. Severe storms likely East of the red line. Storms are likely in the remaining cupcake area.
Storms this afternoon could rip roofs off, bring trees and powerlines down while dumping giant hail up to tennis balls which will wreck your car. Stay safe everyone, lets see what kind of damage and destruction Mother Nature causes today.

Another (Brisbane Weather):

Just been released by the bureau of meteorology

They are predicting a very active severe thunderstorm day with lots of warnings to be issued during the afternoon I hope everybody is prepared for what could be a very wild and busy afternoon

Very large hail is Likely with destructive windgust and very heavy rainfall which could lead to flash flooding

Depending on the movement of the trough we could see very dangerous thunderstorms which means you cannot rule out tornadoes

Stay safe everyone

And my personal favourite (also from BW). Severe storms meet left-wing:

Just remember Storms are not racist

Storms dont care about your skin colour, your brand of car, your house, your finances

Storms can kill
