I wasn't expecting such a gloomy day the other day. Somehow ended up with 8.8mm from it, drizzled for probably 80% of the day. nice and fresh

Yeah, looking at the rain radar it seemed something was going on up there better than here - 8.8mm? Not too shabby!

I'm lost now that it's so quiet in here, where does everyone go to check if we need to get cameras ready and then see everyone's pictures?

In years past there would be lots of people in the SA forum with the potential storms approaching.

The facebook group killed it. The FB group is way easier to upload pictures and video content onto, but it doesn't have the coherency of threads that this place has. The problem is the FB group sucked a lot of the traffic away from here, but then people kind of lost some of their interest and never came back here.

FB killed the forums. Not just this one.
There's probably 2 or 3 fairly large FB groups that you can join that will give you all the info you need...

Managed another 1.8mm until 745am from the drizzle. Has freshened the garden a bit.

Had one smallish branch split on our wattle in the front garden from those howling NE'ers the other day.

I dread to think what the damage there might be at my property at Ponde. The trees have been used to strong winds from a SW direction. Whenever we get strong easterly winds, there is some damage.

Is it my imagination or are we experiencing a lot more stronger winds from the east in the last few years? I have had my property for 25 years and have only sustained major damage such as major limbs snapping off or trees being blown in the last year or two.

Thoughts anyone?

Can't comment on frequency as I havent observed weather for long enough. But the other night and most particularly the late December 2016 event was a very unusual and severe NE event. There were probably 130km gusts over mid north peaks that night. A lot of old, stately and usually sheltered trees met their end and the odd farm shed was damaged or demolished. The damage was as bad as anyone I talked to had seen in decades from wind, so quite rare i'd say..just out of chance that we've had a few good windstorms from that direction in the last couple of years rather than any sort of trend I'd suggest.

Some serious lightworks on the radar out west there.
