Storms rapidly approaching from the West at the moment, let's see if they can make the coast.

I was sitting in the car at Domain as the storm went through. The wind gusts were strong enough to rock the car. Initially very big raindrops. Thought we might have been in for some more hail but didn't see any.

Pretty sure the still use both methods.

I know they use both methods at manned stations but the quoted record was stated to have occurred at a very precise time so almost certainly it came from the electronic sensor. The question is whether the electronic sensor or the manually read mercury-in-glass maximum thermometer provides the official maximum for the day.

The mecury thermometers are max and min ones so it would be easy to see how accurate they are compared to the probe ones. And I think the changing temp in a stevenson screen would be slow enough for a mercury thermometer to register and the probes are thick and would take a while to register a change in temp too. I also think the BOM would be smart enough to work out any differences between the two methods.

RTDs are also characterized by a slow response time and low sensitivity, and, because they require current excitation, they can be prone to self-heating.

I would like to see the manually read maximum and the electronic maximum for each day over a 12 month period. The data will tell the story one way or the other.
