Crud weather. Aircons are copping a flogging on a daily basis. No signs of any real build-up yet, Lots of dark clouds sliding past us. Meh.

Still sign of stormy action as the trough moves thru Thursday in Friday, its the westerlies after the trough that could be the big issue though.

Bit of a difference between the Gippsland and tropical QLD. Ive had 70mm in the last 7 1/12 months. Pretty bloody terrible. These storms are nothing but isolated compared to good years. Townsville is one of the best indicators for knowing what the enso state is doing. Its got an extremely good correlation with Elnino and lanina.

A late start to summer, but today brought back the memory of summer real quick.

Ergon decided to kill the electricity at Mundingburra from 1PM to 5PM, just to improve our moods too.

Forum is so dead lately frown Not that I said much anyways.

37.5c at 0930am. SW will still fight the seabreeze this arvo, models still show the seabreeze will win out. just how far inland it will penetrate is the question.

Amazing day locally.
Airport reached 39.8 C
Mount Stuart reached 45.2 C

And also worth noting that BOM have a portable/mobile AWS currently situated around Yabulu which shows a maximum today of 44.6 C too, though its only providing half hourly data so possible it could have been warmer been those observations.

At my place in Burdell, my Davis recorded a maximum of 41.2 C.

I work in Kirwan and am pretty sure it was closer to the Mount Stuart reaching than the Airport one.
As I was leaving work this afternoon, around 4pm, it was immensely hot, and after Id been driving a few minutes once my car thermometer settled down it sat on a constant 42 through Kirwan, which was the same as the Mt Stuart AWS was reporting to the time, as I got out to Shaw Road and drove towards North Shore the temperature gradually dropped on my car thermometer and sure enough when I got home and got out of the car I was amazed how much cooler it felt compared to Kirwan, checked my weather station and it was 36 at home, 6 degrees cooler than what Id seen in Kirwan.

If anyone is ever interested in seeing what the weather is doing in North Shore, or wants to look at the weather webcam (which points at the sky and the weather station itself), my data is all online http://aspgweather.com/townsville/

Dew points have been anywhere from around zero to 26 depending on which side of the dry line we have been on. Overall, averaging in the high teens to low 20s. See http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60801/IDQ60801.94294.shtml

Bear in mind that the 1971 reading was taken with a slow acting mercury-in-glass thermometer which due to its nature would have effectively been responding to an average over several minutes. The new record would probably have been an instantaneous one second reading from an electronic sensor.

I was sitting in the car at Domain as the storm went through. The wind gusts were strong enough to rock the car. Initially very big raindrops. Thought we might have been in for some more hail but didn't see any.

Bear in mind that the 1971 reading was taken with a slow acting mercury-in-glass thermometer which due to its nature would have effectively been responding to an average over several minutes. The new record would probably have been an instantaneous one second reading from an electronic sensor.

Pretty sure the still use both methods.

I know they use both methods at manned stations but the quoted record was stated to have occurred at a very precise time so almost certainly it came from the electronic sensor. The question is whether the electronic sensor or the manually read mercury-in-glass maximum thermometer provides the official maximum for the day.

The mecury thermometers are max and min ones so it would be easy to see how accurate they are compared to the probe ones. And I think the changing temp in a stevenson screen would be slow enough for a mercury thermometer to register and the probes are thick and would take a while to register a change in temp too. I also think the BOM would be smart enough to work out any differences between the two methods.

RTDs are also characterized by a slow response time and low sensitivity, and, because they require current excitation, they can be prone to self-heating.

I would like to see the manually read maximum and the electronic maximum for each day over a 12 month period. The data will tell the story one way or the other.
