Hello Birdie,
Newell Beach, nice quiet suburb, hope you get your launching ramp/fishing dock sorted soon, we were wandering around there a week ago and council has a ways to go yet.

12mm, initially, then 4mm yesterday then a tad more than that today though the showery bits seem to be moving north now.

We should hopefully start to see an increase in showers and storms towards the end of the week and over the weekend. Hopefully more widespread than coastal. Doesn't look like there will be much at this stage.

Just realised I am still reading the bloody MJO forecast graph wrong hahaha. Always thought we saw an increase in showers up here during phase 4 and 5. Just found on BOM's page it is actually phase 6,7 and 8 with the greatest increase during phase 7.

Seems pretty useless for rain so far, nothing entirely unusual about that tho at this time of year. Some more convincing build up activity would be nice

Yeah this time of year is tough Marakai. If we get any rain it has to come from a storm and they are just so hit and miss.
I have only seen one decent rainfall event between july and xmas since being in Mareeba so obviously they are rare. Just hope the MT is not late this year.

I drove through Mareeba for the first time last weekend - couldn't quite believe how dry it is up there. And then coming into Kuranda it just goes 'bam!' green.

Is there anywhere that explains how to read that MJO forecast map?

Hi birdie and welcome.

I will give it a go. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
With the graph the futher the line is from the centre the stronger the MJO. BOM only show what has happened in the current phase so far. They don't have a forecast as far as I know.

BOM MJO

They have a good map that shows what areas are affected and how during each phase here.

BOM map

You can change the 3 month period and see how we are affected just above the map. I just discovered this and before seeing this I thought we were affected the same way during the same phase no matter the month. So our current period is October to December we have the highest increase in rainfall during phase 7. If you change it to January to March we have the highest increase in rainfall during phase 5 and 6.

Hope this helps. I am still learning and other people here maybe be able to add or correct on what i have said.

Good footage of the dust storm in White Cliffs NSW yesterday. Not sure why you can only get the full footage from a Russian? feed. All the others ones don't show when it hits

Sounds like the Cairns I remember. Lack of storms seemed to be the norm up there.

Hahaha Every time a car drives past on the dirt road near the house it looks like this.

Sure is CF. One of the bonuses of living in Mareeba is you get a heap more storms than Cairns. Kinda makes up for the serious lack of rain. hahaha

Yeah certainly much better up the hill. I lost count of how many times I could see the top of them over Copperlode Dam and the sea breeze just held them there. I saw more storms in the first 6 months down here than I did in 8 years up in Cairns.

I better get used to it again if I decide to build on our block at Feluga in a few years.

At least you will get a few more storms in feluga than Cairns CF. But yeah, make the most of the storms you get now.
I will be moving back to adelaide in 3-4 years. I am looking forward to getting storms like they did a few days ago. Over 220,000 lightning strikes on thursday night. A friend had 4 hit on her property. 2 hit trees and 2 hit in the horse paddock near her house making them bolt. Lucky she didn't lose any.

Can't see that improving anytime soon, nothing conducive to storms or W/S build up at this time, nothing
