I always love Wet Snow's reports, and I'm so happy that finally, people are starting to discuss the extremes of Mena.
There's never been much discussion before, and I've always been worried that yet, another overseas correspondent could be lost due to lack of Aussie interest. But alas, the interest has been rekindled which is great.

I quite often wish we had more correspondents from overseas.
I love Wet Snow's weekly reports, and hope they continue.

Homer. (from Springfield)

Many Thanks for the kind words & interest, Homer (& All):

No, ya'll don't ever have to worry about me leaving Weatherzone: I love it here and you Good Folks of Australia are stuck with me. Another reason I'd love to visit your Great Country is that there are LOTS & LOTS of very friendly people in Aus-land (such as yourselves).

Trust me, I'm just as fascinated with your weather-patterns (opposite to ours here in the NH) as ya'll are with mine.

I hope to keep posting on here Indefinitely.

Hello Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE......HIGH........LOW..........RAIN
Feb..2..38F/3.3C...29F/-1.6C...0.45"/11.4mm
.......3..42F/5.5C...21F/-6.1C...---
.......4..33F/0.5C...27F/-2.7C...0.40"/10.1mm
.......5..28F/-2.2C..16F/-8.8C...---
.......6..23F/-5C....13F/-10.5C..---
.......7..27F/-2.7C..20F/-6.6C...0.05"/1.2mm
.......8..33F/0.5C...23F/-5C.....---

For the week of Feb. 2-8, Mena's Avg. Max.: 52.1F/11.1C; Avg. Min.: 29.0F/-1.6C.

This past week was the coldest (avg.) week of 2014 thus far. Much of the rain that fell on the 2nd & 4th fell as Freezing Rain. Sleet also fell on the 2nd, Snow Flurries also fell on the 5th & 6th; raintotal on the 7th was liquid equivalent of .5"/1.2CM of Snowfall. Precipitation on 2nd was leftovers from the previous days' Pacific cold front; Low-Pressure to our South caused the precipitation on the 4th; the other precipitation was from upper-level impulses crossing over my area (from West-East). Very little sunshine seen during the week. Maximum on the 6th was 29 degreesF/16.1 degreesC below normal for the date. Mena experienced below freezing temperatures for around 107 consecutive hours (from midday on 4th to very late PM on the 8th)--such a long stretch of this type doesn't happen here that often. Foggy conditions caused a nighttime temperature rise late PM on the 8th.
Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-11:45PM listed for the 2nd (as the temperature hung around the 31F/-0.5C mark for most of the day); Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-11:40PM listed for the 5th (as the Daytime Maximum was a cool 23F/-5C at the 7:12AM sunrise); Overall High-11:20PM-listed for the 8th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for more Wintry precipitation early-week with a nice warm-up as the week progresses (my area will be put under a Winter Storm Watch for tomorrow [Monday] as Freezing Rain, Sleet & Snow are expected).

What a fantastic week for Mena, you'd be lucky to see those sort of temps at Thredbo Top Station (1957 m, 36S) in a cold winter. Geez the US wipes the floor with Australia's appendages when it comes to interesting weather, particularly at the colder end.

Not sure if I'd put up with the relentless heat and humidity that is typical of summer south of the Mason-Dixon line though. I'd be happier north of 40N where the length of summer is a little shorter and significant snowfall is a feature through winter.

Places in South Texas are getting close to 30C now (McAllen, Wink etc.), so it will probably get warmer from here on in at least in Mena. The northern states will probably stay in the deep freeze for a while yet, amazing how consistent the cold has been this winter. However, this has been balanced by record dry and warmth in California and to a lesser extent the Pacific Northwest.

Hello Folks:

You may care to have a glance at the most recent US Weather feature map (issued at 3:15PM EST on Sunday, Feb. 9)

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/noaa/noaa.gif

Map shows a favored scenario for Freezing Rain for my area: Cold air in place and Low-Pressure (to my South) moving along a cold-front boundary. The position of the vortex of such Low-Pressures determines whether my area gets a cold rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow (or a mixture of these). So far, my area is on the southern fringe of the expected snowfall and only 1"/2.5CM snowfall is expected for my area...currently here (8:18PM Sunday) it is foggy, drizzly and around 33F/0.5C...

Hello HumphreyBear: Many Thanks for the kind words and interest. Yes, I'm beginning to wonder when my area will warm-up enough to get to our current average maximums (~52F/11.1C) again--quite a prolonged spell of abnormally cold weather here so far. It looks like beneficial drought-breaking rains are finally hitting parts of California (and good snows in the mountains).

Cheers~~~Wet Snow

For the week of Feb. 9-15: Mena's Avg. Max.: 53.4F/11.8C; Avg. Min.: 30.2F/-1.0C.

This past week featured good amounts of sunshine and a nice warm-up later in the week. A dry Canadian cold front (few clouds, gusty NW winds) passed through on the 14th. The sunshine and warmer conditions felt almost "Springlike", especially compared to the recent prolonged cold-snap (the maximum on the 13th was Mena's first normal/above-normal top since the 1st). Lower humidity levels caused some nice daily temperature spreads.
Overall Low-11:21PM-listed for the 9th; The Maximum on the 10th was at 12:01AM and 2:10PM, the Overall Low was at 11:59PM; Overall Low-11:40PM-listed for the 14th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a continuation of the unseasonably warm temperatures with shower chances later in the week. We here (& much of Arkansas) are fairly dry and could do with a good raindump. Sunset here currently has stretched out to 6:01PM.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Tomorrow--Monday--is the Presidents' Day holiday (Washington's & Lincoln's birthdays combined) here in the US.

For the week of Feb. 16-22: Mena's Avg. Max.: 55.1F/12.8C; Avg. Min.: 31.8F/-0.1C.

WoW! What a difference a week makes! This week felt very balmy compared to the previous weeks. A dry Canadian cold front passed through midday on the 17th & a Pacific cold front (again, dry in my area) passed through on the 20th. Very windy (pre-frontal S & W winds) on the 20th, with gusts of 35MPH+/56KPH+. Otherwise, conditions felt very Springlike and it was nice to wear T-shirts for a few days. Lower humidity values caused some very nice daily temperature spreads. Thick clouds and foggy conditions caused a nighttime temperature rise on the 19th.
Overall Low-11:46PM-listed for the 17th (as the Morning Minimum was a balmy 55F/12.7C); Overall High-11:26PM-listed for the 19th (as the Daytime Maximum was 56F/13.3C at 3:53PM); Overall Low-11:50PM-listed for the 20th (as the Morning Minimum was a very warm 61F/16.1C).

Wednesday, February 19, 2014: My 53rd Birthday. Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Partly Cloudy-Ceiling 3,700FT, 4,400FT Broken; Temp.: 66F/19C (temperature at my house was 60F/15.5C); Dew Point: 57F/14C; Visibility: 10miles/16.1kms; Wind: 270degrees (West) at 5mph/8.0kph; Barometer: 29.94"/1,013.9hPa/mB.

48 Contiguous US State High Max.: 90F/32.2C at Needles, CA
48 Contiguous US State Low Min.: -4F/-20.0C at Lebanon, NH

The nice run of above-normal maximum is nice--but with such stretches this time of year--but it will not last as we're forecast for a fair cool-down as the new week progresses (our forecast top for the coming Wednesday will be around 40F/4.4C), with only minimal chance for showers in the week. We could really do with some rainfall, as conditions continue to be fairly dry (as of yesterday--Saturday--Fort Smith, AR has only recorded 0.94"/23.8mm rainfall for the month, which is 1.20"/30.4mm below average. For the year this far there, they've copped 1.73"/43.9mm rainfall, which is 3.22"/81.7mm below normal).

The thing i love about the states is the massive variability of the weather. Here in brisbane its like anything from 24 every day in winter with 10C min and 20C min and 30C max in summer. Never changes frown

Folks:

If any of you would like to see the (MANY) pics I've taken (weather-related, Mena and surrounds, etc.), perhaps you could find me on Facebook.

A couple Christmases ago, a good friend gifted me with a Nikon Coolpix digital camera and I've had lots of fun with it. All the pics I take are fully captioned.

If you're on Facebook, PM me & I'll give directions to my FB page.

You can post pictures on Flickr (maybe some other sites) and post a link here (copy and paste HTML/BBCode). Some people here seem to know other ways.

Those highly variable temperatures must make life interesting. Looks like you had a heat wave last week. Those maxima wouldn't be out of place in Sydney in Winter. Even the minima away from the coast and built up areas, although 27F would be uncommon.

Not much variability in Sydney recently. In February so far every day has ranged from an overnight low of 63 to 72 (except for one 60 degree morning) to an overday high of 74 to 84.

P.S. Happy birthday.

What amazes me most is that Mena can have two minimum temperatures of -2.7C over two weeks, while the maximum temperatures for both days which recorded the -2.7C minimums were -0.5C (10th) and 21.1C (18th)!

Minimum temperatures around the 27F/-2.7C mark are not uncommon in parts of inland Queensland in winter, however the maximum temperatures on those days would be between 54F/12C and 64F/18C, rarely as high as 21.1C and definatley nowhere near as low as -0.5C.

Crazy Weather!!!

Hello Folks:

Heard on the local news today (Monday), that (nearing completion) there have been 1,539 dump-truck loads of tree debris (from the Dec. 5-6 icestorm) removed from Mena. Now THAT would've made a HUGE bonfire!!!

As I mentioned, we had a Thundershower (several good claps of thunder) earlier today (Sun.) with the temperature at 32F/0C and falling. Here's a short vid I shot (Please See):

(I just heard another distant thunder rumble--Freaky weather!!!)

For the week of Feb. 23-Mar. 1: Mena's Avg. Max.: 56.8F/13.7C; Avg. Min.: 33.7F/0.8C.

This past week was mostly dry and featured more variable temperatures. The minimum on the 27th was only 2degreesF above the Record Minimum for the Date. Canadian cold fronts--mostly dry in my area--passed through on the 23rd & 25th. Otherwise, the week felt noticeably cooler (overall) than the previous week.
Overall Low-11:47PM-listed for the 23rd (morning minimum was a balmy 50F/10C); Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 26th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for very cold temperatures (frigid Wind-Chills) early-week, followed by rebounding temperatures. The rain we've received today (Thundershowers and 32F/0C) was very welcome, indeed.
At 4:10PM today--as per the US METAR Map--the Boone County Airport at Harrison, AR recorded a Thundershower in the vicinity (VCTS), blowing snow and a temperature of 14F/-10C!

For the week of Mar. 2-8, Mena's Avg. Max.: 58.8F/14.8C; Avg. Min.: 35.5F/1.9C.

This week featured a sharp cool-down, followed by warming conditions. Quite a "weather-active" day on the 2nd, due to a Canadian cold front (supplying the frigid air) and a Southerly-tracking Low pressure (providing the "overrunning" moisture). Much of the rain on the 2nd fell as a few rounds of Thundershowers--while the temperature was hovering around 32F/0C! Very freaky! The showers tapered off as a brief time of Freezing Rain, also had Snow Flurries during the AM hours of the 3rd and Freezing Fog (not common here) on the morning of the 4th. Areas to our N/NW--on the 2nd--had periods of Thundersleet and Thundersnow.
Temperatures on the 2nd fell from 55F/12.7C--around 1:15AM-and were down to 36F/2.2C at the 6:45AM Sunrise and down to 28F/-2.2C around 6PM. The 3rd was a Very, Very Frigid March Day as the Daytime Maximum was only 20F/-6.6C around 2:30PM (am unable to determine if this was a Record Low Maximum for March); winds (NW) on that day also caused Wind Chill values to be below 10F/-12.2C for much of the day. Nonetheless, the rain was very good to see as we were getting fairly dry here.
The late-week warmth felt very good. I notice that Jonquils are starting to bloom in area yards and that more local trees are starting to bud; great to see the Robins, Cardinals and Blue Jays around as well.
Today (Sunday) at 2AM commenced Daylight Saving Time here in the US--meaning our Sunrise today was 7:36AM with a 7:20PM Sunset.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warming maximums before another cool down/shower chance by mid-week.
