Right now I'd be glad if the smoke went away. Hard to tell whether it's cloudy or not.

Nychum/Mount Mulligan is well alight, and so are the southern parts of Rookwood.

40.3 degrees and 21% humidity.

All depends how strong it gets I think. If it stays weak it should head towards the coast

I don't care what it is, as long as a good amount of it makes it past the Featherbeds and drops water on us.

Looks like a bit of rain north of Mount Mulligan, but none on the fires.

Seem to be a few more started up in the last few hours

Yeah Simmo what we need is just a sloppy, troughy low pressure area to hang about and dump vast quantities of rain over FNQ for a few days.....but how often have we ever seen that in the first week of December..?...

And DU if we don't get at least some rain this week I'm gunna feel like smashing that glass of yours and slitting my wrists and chewing on the pieces... crazy .This is by far the worst late winter/build up season that I've experienced here..I also feel a bit for the older folk trying to deal with this heat and dryness that they probably have never felt before....it must be a nightmare for some...and ,hell, imagine being a roofer or a concreter...wouldn't that be fun ATM..!

The weather in this place never ceases to amaze me...probably the worst place to try and forecast in the country..

Our main creek has nearly totally stopped flowing which has never happened in living memory...

Chillagoe Creek dried up again a couple months ago. It dried up 2 or 3 years ago for the first time in about 60 years, according to one local. It survived the 2017 Dry, and dry again for the second time.

When I moved here eight and a half years ago, the creek banks at the waterhole constantly seeped moisture and you walked through mud, even in the Dry. Now it's as dry as the rest of the land.

Never in my time here but this year has been an odd one. Good wet season ending with a big flood then a switch was flicked and we have had near record dry. Then record breaking heatwave, which is still happening. Now potentially and early drenching. Definitely the year for it.

Latest EC. Just WOW! Unlikely but incredible that this is a run on the second day of December

Hope you haven't pencilled in the 178.5mm onto your rainfall charts yet Simmo….and 500mm+ along the coast...…...I'm highly dubious about those forecasts.. crazy

Is the Chilligoe Ck the only surface water near your town 28...? Has everyone got bores around there..?

The only creek water except for the Walsh about 10km as the crow flies. Think there's a spring out the main road a bit but don't know what that's like.

We had 470mm Dec 2010 and 400mm Dec 2015, be good to hit those numbers.

By geezuz it was hot on the reef yesterday, surface water by the sounder was around 28.6c before sunrise and peaked at around 30.3c in the early arvo on the way home. It felt cool compared to air temp. some white bommie tops not sure if they are still from the last event cause I han't been to this spot since before then.

Seems to be picking up a bit as I type this now. Hopefully it won't crash while watching Owen.

Even hotter when you break down with no canopy or cover and have to wait hours for a tow from the VMR....and even worse than that, break down whilst trolling so not even over a decent fishing or snorkelling spot....yeah, yesterday was a real ripsnorter of a day on the water... frown

I learned a lesson in NW-WA many moons ago. We got a flat tyre on the highway, not far from the access road. Stuck without a jack, and none of the many people we knew going past stopped...!!!

No water of course. We were only on our way to the shops 2 hours away after all. Not far. Why carry extra stuff.

Someone did eventually stop. Ever since then I've never been anywhere without extra water, and clothing/hats for sun protection.

When I looked at that map I thought you were making a joke, yet checking the radar it looks very wild and woolly between Atherton and Mareeba.
Here's hoping Simmo gets some, will it make it as far north as you marakai?

The cell that passed over the Atherton area looked intense on the radar, reports of hail, trees & power lines down. Looks like it even may have produced a small tornado, there is a video of it on the ABC online FB page.

Some welcome rain out your way Simmo?

I work in Walkamin, and last week the road through the area was closed to fire's and I had to go through a very long long detour.

Today, that storm popped up at Tolga, skimmed past Walkamin (LGCC) and moved onto Mareeba. Near the Mareeba Aerostrip trees were down and debris everywhere. Huge rain too as I drove home. At work, could hear deep rolling thunder and the occassional *smack* lightning strikes! It was great to see!!

I am so hoping Owen comes for a visit... he can dump his load all over us!! smile

There's a big cell coming up to the east of us. Blowing up all the dust here. Don't know whether it will wet us or not, at least, hopefully, it will cool down everything to the east of us and cool us down too.

Currently 35 degrees outside and 37 inside. Hasn't cooled down much. It was still 39 in and out at 6pm.

We had some fookn doofus traveling north along the Mulligan flicking matches out the window on Sat morning starting a large fire near Lighthouse rock which then flared up and went over into Brooklyn station once the wind got hold of it, also another up in Mount Lewis park started by Lightning that was smoldering away for a week or so took off in the heat and is burning along the ridges. Looked like Armageddon here this arvo as that storm front came through visibility through the haze is about 500m.

That storm to the east completely missed us, but is still putting on a good light show, no rumbles though.

Sort of coolish breeze, but hasn't cooled things down much. cry cry

Still 32 degrees outside and 33 inside, phew. Guess that's a lot better than 42. :-/

ha ha ha ha ..... Now there's rain to the west of us, but still nowhere near us.
I can still smell smoke, so the north end of the Featherbeds must still be burning, in spite of the storm that *looked* like it dumped on them.

We sure do need some torrential rain to get a bit of flow happening and flush all the leaves out...Very nice to see some moisture building along the coast and Tablelands...we might get lucky yet... smile

Yeah Ron it was more disappointing than anything...sun had some bite but the sea sure was flat...sounds like you had a good day though..any fish biting..?

28, I always take plenty of water as well...usually have drinking water plus 50 or so litres of frozen waterbottles to keep the fish cool..I also need to replace the cover on my canopy so its sitting in the shed ATM...

That sounds a good place for it to be Scott...

Power just went out at 10.35pm. Don't think it will be back for a while.

Being overrun by tiny insects on my phone. Might call it quits for the night, and save battery.

Bit of snap crackle and pop in that cell just passing over us now here and some more to come by the looks of it on radar. Chuck a heap of course salt in there as well RF. Bro inlaw works on a local Barra farm out here and he recons the higher the salt content the cooler and longer it (slurry) will all last.
You can even make quick small lots of ice with fresh water in some of the mixes.

To add as the rain comes down here smile

The first form of ice is created when water freezes. People assume that it occurs at 32°Fahrenheit, 0°Celsius, or 273.15 Kelvin. Freshwater density begins to increase at 4°C, and ice forms as fusion occurs at 0°C. However, saltwater fusion occurs around -2°C, but that varies with the level of salinity. This means polar sea water can cool as much as 6°C before ice forms.

So you can get a slurry down to 6-8c below or more with a bit more salt if sealed and make some ice with fresh water in a kill box as well.

That said, been fishing for quite a long time and never seen it happen as most Fisho's are very responsible types and would never mix Mojito's or Margareta's with salty ice while Fishing unless forced to.

damn Lightning has escalated a tad over the last 20 minutes an power dropped out for a minute there as well. Nice thunder though smile

What a night here at Newell! Didn't crank up until early hours but the lightening was like paparazzi, just non stop and lots of rolling thunder with the odd boom to make me jump. Didn't sleep very well for wanting to listen to it. Not alot of rain out of it but we have a nice fresh morning (for now!)

Nice light show last night but only managed 5mm out of it with most falling out behind Dunk.

More rain to come hopefully.

Was around 15mm out my way. Apparently plenty of lightning and thunder. Most of the night.
Had a little bit of thunder and rain in Townsville. I would say about 2mm.

Power was out for just on one hour. Only affected the town.

No rain at all. Good light show for a while, too far to hear any thunder.
Starry night, with many flashes broadly across the heavens, is the best way to describe it.

Cairns - where nothing actually happens...is it our turn this afternoon???

Good to see some rainfall out there if you were under a storm yesterday. The video footage is amazing on the Tablelands.

9.55am and already 38.1°C

The storms to either side of us last night did nothing to cool us down, as they often would have.

Refer Facebook and the usual weather watchers pages including Ozcyclone Chasers and Atherton Live Weather for the vids being shared. ABC Far North also had a few of them.

Guess I'll miss out then, price to pay for not using the dreaded FB, even though it can be a very handy tool at times.

Glad you got some marakai, maybe we'll get our turn tonight. Great timing, TMR has decided to spread some red dirt over the road to try and keep us quiet. Will only make slippery mud instead of making the road better.

2.5 mm here last night...

I'm not liking the latest GFS raincast with Cairns down to 50 mm for the next 10 days.....Could this event be a fizzer..?

Interesting comments on the salt water slurry guys.....but just out of interest how cold do fish need to be kept for a day trip or a day and a half...?..I have always just used the ice bottles and some party ice tipped in between...I also don't usually bleed anything except Tuna and Mackies...when I'm eating them I cant tell the difference between a bled or non bled fish anyway..

Might have to give the ice slurry a go, though, as filleting is easier the firmer the flesh...

We can only hope for some rain in a few days if Ex-Tropical Cyclone Owen moves west.
Somewhere on the coast might get a good drink out of it,- hope it's Cairns & surrounds.

Raining now.
After a bit of blustery wind.
Not a big cell though and the rest will miss us.
Reckon I'll still need to give my plants some water, esp since whatever we've got it won't take us thru to Saturday when I'm allowed to water again.

lovely light show out to the NW at the moment, damn hot and humid though.
Chilled Tequila should fix that me thinks.

Nothing here but stifling humidity.....been a very uncomfortable day..

The frogs are going off tonight....quite a chorus happening and the missus's staffy is a bit freaked out by them..

Marakai..I seriously don't know why people drink Tequila..I'd rather drink lighter fluid...a nice glass of some type of American bourbon over ice is far more palatable IMO..... smile

Whilst hitchhiking in the middle of nowhere in Central Mexico many moons ago ...a wild bunch of dudes in a pickup offered me and another guy a ride in the back and we got got talking (kinda-in my really bad spanish) and they offered to take us to a party in a remote village..once there they ladled out cups of this liquid from some big vats of this white milky juice that got us pretty wasted after a couple of hours...tasted like sour crap but we had a great time...we left while we could still sort of walk and luckily eventually made it to a hotel..they told us it was a fermented cactus juice and could be distilled to make Tequila....frigging horrible stuff...it was called Pulque... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulque

Apart from Coke and Corona there is not much worth drinking from Mexico... grin

I thought the tequila and kahlua in Mexico was much nicer, & smoother than here -- but that was 30 years ago. I couldn't drink kahlua when I got back because it tasted like kero in comparison.

I quite like a malibu or cointreau on ice, in a nice glass, these days.

But what I would really really like right now is a full-on storm for a few hours with water running everywhere -- even if it means I'm driving in 2 foot of sludge tomorrow.

Back in Mareeba now so back to storms missing my location. Had 17.2mm at home while I was away. Definitely a lot greener now. Loads of trees and big branches down around Atherton and the scrub just north of MAP.

Still looking like we will get a good drink. Would like it to move a little further north though to improve our chances. grin

EDIT: looks like Atherton is going to cope it again!!!

Yeah things are moving in all sorts of directions. Probably had about 15mm. Will check later.
Great thunder and lightning.

Mareeba is green in the 1st week of December. I would have never thought it would happen. Especially not this year. Hopefully a bit more to come over the next week or so.

13.2mm. Rainfall rate peaked at 160mm/hr.

This is my wettest start to December in my time in Mareeba and it only needs 0.2mm to be the second wettest December overall.
2015 is the wettest with 202mm but only 1.2mm fell in the first 3 weeks. Dec 2016 total was 15.6mm. Dec 2017 30.4mm.

Sometimes I think you're better off without guttering,- as long as there's grass right up to the house, otherwise all the mud and sh!t splash up the walls.

Lots of houses in Darwin don't bother with them.

We never did put up the gutters, they're stored in the weeds somewhere because I could never work out where the torrential flow would go safely away so gave up.
Am awake because of some mighty cracks passing overhead with.. yayy us, rain. 30mm.
Reassuring to see the southeasterly flow pattern has finally reached us, perhaps bringing cooler weather.
Unusually we sat out the storm without sweating like pigs with the storm doors shut so it must be cooler already. Although I've asked for a car battery with small inverter for a fan for standby in future, hate leaning on partner for chores but it really would help when all the power has been turned off.

I'm awake to Dormant - just so noisy couldn't even try and sleep so made a cup of tea and sitting in the porch.
Had one almighty crack moments ago from a cg just down the street which I saw out the corner of my eye - jumped about a foot in the air and half the street lights went out?? Abit weird.
45 mm so far from storms tonight smile

Had a nice heavy 20 mins of rain to cool everything down. Temp dropped about 3° in about 20 mins.

After the N to NE winds the S.Easterly set in about 20:00h. Never thought I'd be so happy to see a cooling S.E. flow. DP backed off a few degrees too. Really pleasant at the moment.

Has anyone else noticed that the 00z EC runs have had crazy rainfall totals lately? The last 00z run had nearly 1000mm falling in 10 days for Mackay and surrounds. The 12z run always winds the totals back considerably.

Also do people find the 12z runs to be the more accurate runs generally?

GFS seems to be modelling the Tablelands area rainfall better than EC at the moment.

6mm from light rain after midnight.

Good light show but too tired to watch after a day trip to Cairns.

Drove into a torrential wall of rain east of Mareeba yesterday afternoon, after a stinking hot day. What a joy to be getting wet around town.

Got out to Arriga and sun shining again of course...

(No aircon in the car.)

Scott how much of that fell early yesterday evening? Was in Tully early evening last night and it looked as though it was bucketing down up your way.

65mm and one dead frog recorded in the nylex this morning.
The creeks are flowing again, and the main creek has risen, but i am sure if there was no more follow up rain, they will stop again within a few days.

A bit O.T.- but read that Darwin Airport may have experienced its warmest night on record last night, with a temp of 29.9°. Along with a DP of 26.1°, & RH 80%.

Might be a bit of 'Mango Madness' around today with grumpy people and short fuses. mad

Seems to be no steering at all so far today. A cell would need to build right on top of you to get any rain.

To me I think it looks like the low off the coast is no closer than it was last night. Perhaps that is why we are seeing bugger all in the way of a widespread event. Might still be time if it gets a wriggle on.

Just checking out Windy. The last 24hrs they both EC and GFS have progged similar accumulated rainfall for my area. I see now they are poles apart. EC going for a bucketing and GFS just a standard bunch of showers.

Just showing how difficult this system has been to forcast.

A few decent showers coming through now.

What a bummer looking at all that moderate to heavy rain on the radar, that just parallels the coast and keeps on going.

Some nice little showers over the last hour or so dropped 50mm in the gauge...shame to see so much moisture out in the Coral sea and so little over the coast..

Hopefully the Sou'easters will push a few showers ashore the next day or 2..

Lolol, Wassat, Hickory? Did you say something?

Oh Yeah, we got rain. 73mm in an horrendous night - not on the big scale of things but...restless adolescent staffy, zooming mossies through the billowing lace curtains serving for a door, yet too sticky to keep a sheet over (the other half never gets bitten, he's got me as a lure!).

A humongous cane toad (fun when you're sleeping on the floor, well trying to) setting dog off. All power unplugged, hence fans and lights too.

Come midnight I was sitting in my recliner reading an old LeCarre with a triangular led light perched on my chest illuminating the pages while those two snored away on the deck. Just woke up to a lovely peaceful morning with a faint hope that..

Perhaps partner will fog the mossies (the new machine I can't pull the starter hard enough to get it to catch despite it standing on a bench in a homemade bracket (old age, grrr).

Perhaps build a doggy door in the screen door for her to access atrium at night...

Perhaps caulk the widening gap between the two parts of the house built at separate times so I don't have to mop the puddle between...

Perhaps have a charged car battery with small inverter for a 240 fan...

Perhaps...

As I said, minor things in life, still an idyllic life!

Nice total Dormant. Not sure about the rest of it though smile

We have some good model alignment this morning in regards to the remnants of Owen. EC, GFS and CMC all moving him north and going with a crossing from about Innisfail to Caldwell Sunday night Monday. Access still has the low approaching Cairns then travelling SE parallel to the coast.

That deep wide blob I linked to around 9pm last night gave us absolutely zero.

Still awake at 2am still nothing but a little lightning way in the distance.

By 8.30 this morning, the 5mm from 1pm yesterday had evaporated back to 3.5mm, on what was a cool day here. So how can the official reading time of 9am make sense...?

Haha, you guys, allergic to chores?

Nah, actually I know living up here the guys really work hard at the tough stuff. It can be a very exhausting life doing maintenance given the climate.

And, turning out meals, specially dinner in a 35 degree kitchen is hard.

Nice cool, not humid day up here today. Nice SSE breaze. Good for a reprieve but unlikely any rain up here over the next couple of days unless we get a storm.

I think you would do better with a deep cycle battery, coupled to a small solar panel and controller. With that you could drive a 12v fan and get some sleep. Here's two links to the sort of gear you need.

Yeah Simmo, its certainly showing a serious amount of moisture...it could be a very wet weekend indeed.....I hope it pushes inland a bit and soaks the whole region...some of your models aren't looking so silly now...

Good soak in type of rain too. Also dropped the temp about 4° in a bit over an hour.
So pleasant now, with the SSE gusting through the house.

Thanks for your tips and links, Hickory.

However, being off grid already, and partner being my handyman/genius it's just a case of him getting an el cheapo $30 inverter since we always have a spare auto battery charged for machinery and heaps of cheap floor fans.
It's just... me getting it on the list (grins and waves at Scotts rude reference to his wife's hormones).
Then we'd be able to run a few lights and fans while our sweat pools on the floor and the lightning crashes above.

I was thinking you'd get longer hours from a 12v fan than an inverter and a 240v fan. Inverters are only about 84% efficient and 240v fans draw more current,- but if you get say, 8 hours out of the battery, you're all good for that night.
Move it to the top of his list. Priority #1. grin

Ha!, Hickory, ain't my list - and you're making my eyes cross with your numbers. I'm sure you're right though.

A great cool night's sleep and 6mm in gauge - I feel almost human.

Looks like all models are in agreement now. BOMS rainfall for sunday for Mareeba 40-120mm, Monday 15-50mm

Three day rainfall forecast for my location has EC, GFS and CMC all ~100mm with falls up to 200mm in the usual places on the tablelands.
Falls of 100-200mm along the coast from Port Douglas to just south of Mackay.

Pretty quiet out here, other than the odd scud and a small gust. Might pack some stuff away in the shed.......just in case.🤔

JTWC upgrade to medium chance of re-intensifying. GFS has been on this since this morning, the rest still opting for a stiff breeze and a bit of a soak.

Rather still here to be honest, and the ants are doing backflips. The quiet has that pre cyclone feel about it. Anyway all packed up and ready in case.

How nice of you to recognise authority when you see it, Weary, would that my partner was of the same mind. :))

I have enjoyed the overcast weather though unless the tail/twin of Owen follows on we might have everything dragged south and get... yet more heatwaves.

Yeah mate it was a beautiful day alright...I just needed a chillout day ..that heatwave nearly killed me..

and I wish my boy could have been with your inlaws last night..he is 17 on his P's and thinks he is bulletproof ..already been booked at 16km/h over the limit ...just doesn't get how quick it can all go pearshaped in a car …

I had to look up that acronym Weary...lol..

Dormant, if this low crosses the coast Cairns or south you will probably miss most of the rain unfortunately... Oz cyclone chasers have a good video run down of what might be likely to happen on their facebook page....

Interesting couple of days ahead...

Looking at Willis Is radar, the low appears to be smack bang over the top.

I feel like its too high and it will make it to land north of us???

Also, why do the the SWW include Mareeba and Innisfail, but no mention of Cairns??

Could this skip right past us?

Guess that explains the downgrading from a cyclone, no density to it besides the lack of high winds ... but then, as always, I'll pass on the rain if it means I pass on the destruction.

Have a little patience guys.....looking at the radar I think the centre of the low has been moving very slowly west from Willis island towards Holmes reef over the last day....as soon as its close enough to land all those rainbands should keep wrapping around and starting to hit the coast from the South-east.....should start to get pretty wet during this morning...and I also share in Dormants sentiment...hope it doesn't get too gusty..!

For about 15 hours now, I've been watching the constant moderate showers approaching from the SSE, and just about nothing has made it past Fitzroy Is.

3mm,- out of 15 hours of approaching showers. Bloody pathetic. Everything just disappears, leaving some very light drizzle.

Edit: Gfs is the same too but they have moved the rain South of Cairns.

19mm.

Been raining steady since 3am but nothing too exciting. This low is taking its time to get to the coast. We will likely see improved totals as the day wears on.

Would be horrible out there today BG.

Just been down to the river and one of 50m gums has lost a huge branch, probably close to 20m long. I thought it was sticking out at a funny angel the other day. Another victim to the heat we had. It is a fully grown Eucalyptus Grandis hence the massive size. I have a few down by the river and they are the biggest Eucalypts I have even seen.

Starting to get heavy out here now. Looks set to only get heavier

Rain stopped for now and the sun trying hard to make an appearance. The breeze is picking up and the ocean is wild.

Less rain than I have expected and certainly less than has been modelled to this point.

Is it just me or have these recent lows/cyclone become very hard for the experts and models to predict? Or, are the experts gunshy on having a stab at a possible prediction through fear of ridicule?

Awesome to have some of those growing Simmo...incredible trees...there is whole forests of them near Bulahdelah where I grew up as a kid, including a famous one called "The Grandis" which is about 250ft tall...your mention of them brought back very fond memories of rallying my paddock basher and dirt bike through those state forests as a kid...

Sf...the Bureau have been mentioning a level of "uncertainty" about predicting this system and models have chopped and changed each run regarding quantities and locations of rainfall....but we still seem to be on track for a drenching as the low crosses the coast..

I still think there will be some ripper totals in the gauges tomorrow morning...enjoy the sunbathing while you can.. smile

Scott I just can’t remember so much uncertainty in the past. Have these systems changed? Or are the experts no longer going off experience and gut as the older meteorologists retire and prefer to allow the computer to give the predictions?

Look I know a lot of parameters go into forcasting but to me, and perhaps social media has played a part in this, but experts seem reticent to offer too much recently.

I am not getting down on them, I have just noticed that the last few weather events have been “highly unpredictable”.

It's a very limited heavy rain prediction area i.e. Port Douglas and south, considering it tracked due west and now facing us with the rain blob just started to envelope us.

Ha,! Bunyip you beat me to it!

Sf, I don't know enough about whats used in the models to determine the forecast but if past historical data is one input, then for a year like we have just had it would have been nightmare for models to forecast..

But also society as a whole certainly has become far more reliant on computers and that would be the way people are now taught in school and Uni....like you say perhaps forecasters are afraid to express an opinion that goes against the computer generated models or maybe it makes them too lazy and they don't have too do the in depth research and analysis to do old school forecasting...

I guess while models are still in their infancy we have to accept mediocre forecastsand a new breed of Meteorologist that is there for looks rather than brains.. grin ..

It can't be overstated just how much good this will do for the local reefs after the heatwave. A couple of degrees of very important drop in SST's

Yeah great observation guys..

I remember Ron mentioning last weekend SST's were 29-30c measured on sonar depending on the time of day ….it was the same off Mission Beach ...it wasn't very cooling , more like bathwater...

Taking a look at the AIMS site, the various reef weather stations already are showing big temperature drops over the last 4-5 days, not just at the surface but down to 12m of 1c or more....this is very significant and still dropping......if we hadn't had this rain event and associated cooling who knows what this summer would have brought...

Its a very welcome event for both the land and sea.. smile and as Dormant mentioned its not a destructive or flooding event ...just lovely widespread, soaking rain with the odd bit of bluster..

Marakai, with the low staying so far north at least you do stand a chance of getting a decent total yet..

Just checked the gauge and we have recorded 309.5mm so far for this event...just an absolute blessing and stress levels have dropped significantly..

God damn scott shocked laugh shocked spose they call it Gumboot country for a reason huh! Sort of torn between hoping for a heap and not as we are waiting on a main line repair of a 6 inch steel irrigation line that's corroded and leaking about 10 lpm which is in a "for now" dry creek bed. Wont be if we get anything near that amount though.

Really chucking it down. I heard a few rumbles too,- all to my north.
This should get a few streams running again. Cool enough to be back under the doona last night. Felt quite nippy.

With the rain I've also had lots of little flying ants in the house. They're fitting through the flyscreen mesh. frown

5mm some time late this afternoon.
Had hoped for more.
But it was cool enough to do some daylight gardening.

Thankfully the nasty miscellaneous tiny gnats haven't arrived yet. Not looking forward to them at all.

Noticed a few butterflies around again.

Reckon you will get yours tomorrow as it passes through Coldy. Was very dark all day here today... Non stop dawn/dusk all day.

About 80km for the clear circle in the middle of it to reach us and then, because the other sides don't appear to be getting replenished, that may be pretty much the end of the rain.
And quite enough I think, I just emptied 30mm.
Certainly nothing like Scotts total, amazing

Just got home to 42mm in the gauge. Very happy indeed. Looks like a small gap coming before some heavy stuff. Will have to make a quick dash around and lock up all the chook coops

Amazing total Scott

Was gonna mention that a bit earlier as well, something going on there that's not right.. Roosting bird maybe ?. Ex Owen looks to be dragging in a fair bit more moisture from the N/E now

https://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemiloops/shirgmscol.html

No rumbles here yet but the rain rate is definitely picking up.

Bout 70 so far today after 50 odd yesterday. With how slow that sucker is moving it should go for a while yet. And then we get to watch it for the next week or so if the models are correct or even close to reality. There is even a slim chance of this thing being a one event drought breaker although that is an absolute best case scenario and probably pushing hope too far.

Wow. Getting smashed right now. Cyclonic would be the word. Lightning, thunder and heavy rain.

I have a 4m deep deck and the rain is hitting halfway up the kitchen window. Talk about sideways.

LOL Nah M8, we pump out of the Mary Creek.
We are on an old 60-70's Tobacco farm with another Creek between our source (The Mary) and the homestead about 400mt distance and then another km or so of mains pipe underground to the other side of the property to water the cattle. Part of the pipe on the first crossing has corroded where exposed on the creek crossing and sprung a leak or five/six/seven... We need to get a digger in to expose the pipe running into the creek bank but with this weather dont like our chances for a while now.
The crossing is an overflow creek of the Mary and normally dry for most of the year but once the Mary fills it will run till the end of the wet.

The bursts of heavy stuff now are pretty wild. Wind gusting to 40 kts, and thunder,- (to my north) is back again.

Not a single fan on in the house now. Only worries are, maybe a heap of mozzies in about 6 days time.

Marakai,- tempted, but I may pass on your offer. Good luck. grin

I just woke up from a peac3eful sleep to find partner climbing creakily up from the tile floor covered in a makeshift quilt bed that I'm aghast that he tried to sleep on because he didn't want to bother me in my five foot wide futon. Oh dear, poor old man.
He said the thunder and lightning drove him in from the deck around 1am and I never heard a thing.
I mean I'm glad, being a wussy type, but how embarrassing to be so oblivious.
Just dumped out 125mm so that brings 24 hour total to 155mm and we've reached the so called eye.

Still pouring down at the moment but looks like we will get a break for a little while before we start to get the ass end of Owen.

Amazing start to the season. Only fair we got an early one after last seasons mid January start.

Oh and the termites picked the start of the rains for the 4th year running. It was 12 days ago they started building up. Starting to think it may not be a coincidence. 1 year to wait to see if they can go 5 in a row. poke

Smack on 100mm at the moment. Pool and rainwater tanks overflowing. Looks like the break wont be as long as I thought. It is going to be muddy doing the rounds this morning

Will check the Nylex too when there is enough light. Can't believe I have received double the MAP.

I had 95mm to 0530 but may have under read due to the sideways nature and lots of trees. Had to go find me thongs.. bar had rolled into patio corner, kids 1.2x2.4 blackboard blown off, small branches through the pool which I switched off till i can clean when i get home.

Two dogs and the missus for me but you can't say no to a staffy. I did consider booting her out though so the dogs had more space.

Ha, Brett, you're a brave man!

I guess we have the other wall to look forward to sometime soon. Almost looks like it passed over Saddle Mountain.
Most comments elsewhere so far are trees and debris down though what will happen when the river catchments disgorge is anyone's guess.

Not too much in the way of wind or storms here. Plenty of good rumblings but nothing close. Plenty of rain though. Didn't empty it but the nylex looks to be showing 215mm and two beetles. No need to water the lawn anymore

180mm since the start of the event, about 160mm from last night.

Pool over flowing, the new drainage along the house works well. The wind was wild over night - love this weather!!

151mm here , been and done the rounds , all fences still up , a few branches down , but we have had stuff all wind really. Sounds like the winds were on the south side like you would expect.
Not really expecting much on the back end but we will see what the day brings.

Yeah we share our bed with a Vizsla , She's not scared of anything but they call them velcro dogs for a reason, just wants to be with us at all times.

Cheers

Will have another consult with the termites. wink

There is currently a poll on Higgins Storm Chasers where you can vote Yes or No to say if it felt like a cyclone last night. Usual comments like:
"Should have been classified as a Category 1 and more warnings from BOM. The wind last night was so powerful it shook the house, brought trees down on the Gilles" and
"Aeroglen and it was a Zombie Cyclone. Very obvious that it was happening, but not quite there."

I am definitely gonna start calling more lows Zombie Cyclones though. Will tell family and friends down south they should call their lows that. Sounds Cool wink

190mm to date for the event at my Gordonvale spot

That blew pretty hard for an ex cyclone, thinned the tops of the trees a bit

It blew ok but not that hard really. Even Tasha went harder than that and tasha was a dubious cyclone at best. I think the recent heat stress that the local vegetaion has been under probably made things seem worse than they were

just 127mm here ..a bit of a piggy in the middle really..

Though it was quite squally..

I had some pot plants blown over and some palm fronds on the ground and a papaya tree blew over so I'd have to class it as a "Mini" cyclone, Simmo….I don't think it was quite strong enough to be a "Zombie' cyclone down here.. grin

Wouldn't surprise me. You are to the north of Larry & Yasi, this time you were right amongst it. I remember some Sydney storms (would've been 'east coast lows' I guess) that were pretty incredible. Horizontal rain, trees over, skyscrapers swaying etc.

Reckon that's it for us out here. Don't reckon anything will make it out this far. Expect to see bright sunshine all afternoon, if not earlier. frown

Haha your welcome C@28.

Not disputing it was windy I just find it funny when people start saying BoM should have classified it a TC. Would love to see these people go through a winter down south and the winds associated with a low when it goes through.

When Ita went through a lot of people I spoke to said it was worse, in Cairns, than Yasi. I have nothing to compare it to and, to be honest, I don't ever want know what it is like to be on the southern side of a cat 4 or 5, it would be terrifying. Cairns is very lucky it did not happen.
The winds I experienced in Ita were just like an average coldfront in SA. Just 3 weeks ago sustained winds of ~90km/hr and gusts of around ~120km/hr where recorded in SA. I think Vic and Tas had stronger.

As Ken kato mentioned on the TC Owen thread...all Lows are basically a Cyclone due to the clockwise rotation of the winds.... but the system also has to meet the official TC criteria to be called a TC.

In regard to wind speed to be classified as a TC from the BOM....

"Tropical Cyclones are low pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have gale force winds (sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater and gusts in excess of 90 km/h) near the centre. Technically they are defined as a non-frontal low pressure system of synoptic scale developing over warm waters having organised convection and a maximum mean wind speed of 34 knots or greater extending more than half-way around near the centre and persisting for at least six hours."

Its pretty simple really..I'm with Simmo and Brett here..I find it pretty bizarre that some people and media second guess the BOM and make up all kinds of crap based on no real knowledge...I saw on social media some people claiming it was a Cat 1 or 2 cyclone just based on localised squalls over their area...

Oh well i cleaned up what was on my side, i will leave the rest for him, gee aren't neighbours a**holes? laugh

Overcast at the moment, but it will be sunny again soon.
Reminds me of escaping south while Yasi advanced, driving through alternating sunshine with high clouds, and heavily overcast with torrential rain - only we're not getting torrential rain, in fact we're not getting rain.

Still quite cool. Nice.

Just finished the day on Green island. Lots of minor debris and one or two weak trees down but not too bad. The biggest effect is on the Torres straoght pidgeons. So many chicks knocked out of their nests. Sent a few off to wildlife carers but they will take a hit this year.

What a topsy-turvy few weeks we've had weather wise.

A bit over 100mm day so far, which brings our total for the past six days to 647mm. It has smashed our December average and with three weeks still to go, is the wettest December for 102 years.

Holy crap GnL..I think you win the lollies..!...awesome total..

Its a great start for the prawns and barra down there in the Hinchinbrook area..

I don't think there will be much action tonight DU...

I'm surprised you have lasted out there that long 28...17mm is ridiculous from an event like this..

Hey Brett, whilst sad to see the squabs knocked out of their nests, the pigeons can nest 2 or 3 times a season I thought and given their scrappy little nests they could potentially be ready to go again next week...I guess they are used to disruptions in their breeding cycle from living in the tropics...bit like the heatwave we just had...I'm sure that would have claimed a lot of feathery little lives as well unfortunately...

I also wonder what effect controlled burning has on springtime breeding on some of our islands like Hinchinbrook..?

Wowza GnL. That is a serious total for the beginning of December. I was stoked with my 150mm.

Yeah things are probably going to be quiet tonight with maybe a couple of mm here and there. Same for the next few days. All eyes will be on Owen in the GoC and if he can pull off that 180...

Thanks Scott. Would like to hope this would continue for the remainder of the wet, but that is a pipe dream. Regardless, it has brought the water table back up, our grass is starting to regrow and the creeks have been flushed and are running again.

It is only heresay, but someone told me Hinchinbrook Island was burning for three weeks. The logic behind it is baffling.

It's raining heavily again.

Fantastic totals so far GnL!!!

And here I was happy with the 389mm Bilyana has received so far for December lol.

Not included in that total is the 40mm that has fallen so far today, might score a few more mm before 9am to tomorrow. smile

Usually the second day after rain the place will be swarming with little flying gnats slipped past/thru the screen doors, and the bigger insects all over the screen doors, and batting themselves against the outside light.

Strangely, I've had no insects yet, apart from the occasional biting gnat. So that is rather weird.

No ants either.

Yeah mate the burn off was right through that heatwave..it baffles me too that fuel reduction burns are needed on an uninhabited island...it baffles me even further that the powers that be want to open the biggest island national park up to commercial development....all while the derelict Cape Richards resort site has never been cleaned up and Port Hinchinbrook marina is virtually unusable..... just seems to be onto the next thing and create a new mess and further set of problems …….you can join the Protect Hinchinbrook group to find out more if you haven't already........ https://www.facebook.com/groups/193570838202866/

Strangely, I've had no insects yet, apart from the occasional biting gnat. So that is rather weird.

No ants either.

But you've had no rain either.

Good morning weather watchers smile smile

A lovely night with some rippa lightening , the storm at the moment is just pouring down with great bang crashes smile

Birdie : Power is a luxury , you need to be self sufficient living in the north. Our power is also out and I have half a bullock in 1 freezer and plenty of seafood and assorted stuff in the other, not to mention cold beer. We don't have any aircon but I can't sleep with out a fan going all year, so that is on the genny too .Hope you can sort something out soon.

Too heavy to go and check just yet.

Looking forward to watching Owen give most of QLD inland a drink next week.

Cheers

It was so lovely and overcast and damp it feels like we got more rain than we actually did.

Looks like Owen does not want a bar of the NT. He is just going to cross over, poke his tongue out, turn tail and run.
Thanks for the warm water guys!!!

Unfortunately it seems that when he does go SE through QLD he will be travelling way to fast to do much good. Pity. Could have been a great relief for inland areas if he goes the right way at the right pace still. Can't rule it completely out yet.

Has anyone bought a BOM calendar? Thought it might make a nice gift but can't find any images of the inside showing just how big the calendar part is - need decent sized daily squares to write things in (like rainfall figures!).

Another 57mm last night.

The big one is fairly big. Bigger than the $2-$20 standard ones you see around. I bought it a couple times years ago. It also has a spiral top with a loop, which stops it curling in humidity. The smaller ones didn't, last time I looked.

Send them an email to check dimensions. They've responded to me in the past.
