From Sunday, a strong a High will move over Victoria and stall in the Tasman sea by mid week, extending a strong high pressure ridge over Victoria.

Things will start to heat up from Monday with Mid 30's in the north and temperatures around the high 20s in the South, with clear skys.
A very weak low dipping to the south on Christmas day and boxing day will deliver light southerly winds in the south keeping things around 30įC, while the north reaches the high 30s.

Once this clears by late boxing day things will really heat up with current models indicating widespread significant heat on Thursday, Friday before a weak mostly dry change sometime late Friday or Saturday depending on the model you look at. Beyond this model support at the moment is for this heat to build back up as another high moves across the bight right behind the change but model consensus at this range is very low. Due to this I have just extended this thread through to the New Year.

Anyway Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone, enjoy the near perfect Summer Weather over Christmas and Boxing day and may 2019 bring Victoria some of those wonderful Sydney Storms!

Cheers logansi for the thread 👍
Yep, going to be potentially a long period of heat
Which will set us up to be a lot drier a lot
Earlier than normal around here

Thanks Logansi, that'll dry the bush out, hope the periodic rain events keep coming as they have of late. .....if they do, it'll be after a 7-10 day lull!

Accessg showing some signs of possibility
Of shower or storm activity Friday night through
To Sunday?
Itís not a widespread rain event, but could be
Isolated falls.
Actually looking at it, probably more cause trouble
Starting fires, might change mind on those type 🤔

Still a lot of uncertainty beyond Thursday, here's a look at ACCESSG run for tonight, it been all over the place as to how far south the heat spreads next weekend which is depended on where a very weak trough in the south sits

This will bring the risk of storms from Friday onwards IMO but doesn't look like the falls will be very high, even the change now due Monday looks like mostly falls from 1-5mm with isolated up to 10mm with another ridge pushing in quickly.

Mildura forecast 46 for Sunday 30th! Very close to a Victora record for December ( 46.6c Robinvale, 1976 ).

Just having a quick look at the models and early indications is that even after a stronger change Sunday week the heat could continue well into the new year with Mildura back into the 40s by Wednesday the 2nd.

Stunning, Stunning day here today, top of 21, no wind and no cloud!

Yeah, it looks like a week change Monday week,
But it fails to really push that hot air away. So
It wonít take much for it to spread back down to
Southern vic

Accessg still trying to keep some moisture in the
Picture, with Friday arvo though to Monday offering
1-5mm through southern vic each day. Possibly
5-10mm isolated around rangers.

Very interesting to see what wins out by the
End of week?

Yeah, i'm assuming it will be from isolated high based showers/storms?

Mildura forecast sure is something
Tommorrow: 35
Christmas: 39
Boxing day: 41
27th: 44
28th: 42
29th: 43
30th: 46

Pretty much the whole north of the divide is looking at 7 days above 35įC, with a couple over 40.

As you can see still likely more to come beyond New Years day. Massive area of heat over 90% of the mainland

Thanks for the info Logansi and Doogasno. The worry with with this continuous heat predicted for this week is the drying off of undergrowth and the consequent risk of bushfires and the welfare of the very elderly, some of whom may not have air conditioning. Does anyone have any statistics of the longest heatwave Victoria has had?

Victorian record for consecutive 40+ days is 12, at Mildura during the 2009 Black Saturday heatwave. Haven't looked at December records yet.

Thanks Blair. 12 consecutive days above 40, at Mildura!! Lets hope the present run of above 40c days doesn't equal that record.

I reckon Mildura will give that record a nudge
To be honest and while weíre at it a lot of othe
Places in north vic might go close as well?

I did here someone say around the traps
That we could be in for a black Saturday type
Summer this year

Big thing which may stop any record is Monday week, doubt it will reach 40 in the north, more like 35 before it builds up again.

I do feel like such a large amount of heat circulating the mainland so early in the season may be a concern going forward.

The monsoon trough is hanging around the Aus tropics, and should remain for a week going by the MJO charts. Good chance this large heat build up will bring some humidity down into central Aus towards the end of the week, which may alleviate fire indexes and add a bit more rain to the fronts as they sweep through southern Aus over coming week or two?

Yeah fair point logansi and agree I canít see any
Substantial change in the foreseeable future that
Could break down that inland heat?
And to add to that, rainfall wise nothing over
5-10mm around anywhere either in the future

ACCESSG finally hinting at a stronger cold front coming in at the end of the most recent run, Thursday 3rd Jan. But still a long way to go and plenty can and will change.

Merry Christmas everyone and have a fantastic day tomorrow

Heat really cranks up tomorrow with 44 in Mildura, also a TFB in Mallee and Wimmera with the wind picking up and a weak change in the south.

What happens beyond Monday next week is still all over the place, EC and GFS have the heat moving in a bit more than ACCESS and lasting longer.

ACCESSG also introducing a bit more moisture this weekend than the others. Risk of storms over the weekend hopefully they bring plenty of rain because everything is going to be very dry.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the perfect weather.

MERRy Xmas everyone 👍

Yep logansi, still very hot Tommoz/Friday.
Still moving around a lot regards to rainfall
Amounts and who gets it? But accessg seems
The most bullish on the heavier falls 5-10mm(not
That is heavy)
What ever we get, I think there will be lightning and
I think they will mainly be high base storms, no huge
Moisture quantity with the trough I donít think?

That's my assumption, sometime i find ACCESS is to widespread with the heavier falls in systems like this, so I read the 5-10 falls as the far more isolated heaviest totals than the model would have you believe.

BOM storm forecast for Friday

There is a minor chance of afternoon convection over the eastern ranges and along the sea breeze convergence. The storms on the sea breeze will be short lived and relatively stationary.

The risk in the west and central is more from elevated storms coming in the evening, and into the night. Storms will move south east at around 120km/h with very little or no precip reaching the surface. Again the risk of the storms is very low.

Really hope we don't see any storms.

Getting hot out there, already nearing 40 in Mildura, 31 here in Portland.

38c up here today! Things really staring to
Brown off real quick around here this week!

Gfs has line of precipitation rate 10-15mm
from nor west of Melb down through
Southern strezleckis and continues out through
Yarram area on Sunday, this looks to really be the
Only time in the outlook that we may see half
Decent rain.

Still more heat to get through Tommoz first

Maybe a band of virga would have been a better description.

Despite the cloud, it has inched up to 26.5C here, so if hot air arrives from the Nth as the models suggest, we may see a 10+degC temp rise in only 30 minutes from midday on?

Was 25c all night now on rise to 35c at 10.45am.

Looks like Heat line sits half of Victoria until late next week. The Heat too strong for Cool breeze reach Northern Country is awful warm nights.

Just reset my max/min thermo, the max was 41, ...not 42C.

Light wind has gradually backed to SW over past hour, now a BBQ-friendly 32C here.

[edit] - light breeze, not light wind. ....a day of mistakes.

Lovely 28įC here today, a few spots of 'rain' in the last couple of hours.

Still hot over the weekend but not as hot for most but this brings the risk of storms with storms possible in the west tommorrow and East on Sunday into Monday. Hopefully we can avoid any fire starts because the heat won't be far away with ACCESS joining the others for a really hot end to next week before a weak change next Friday but again a high should ridge in very quickly.

Yep logansi, this change dosent really cool things
Off a real lot. Still not sure what sort of rain we
Will receive over the next couple of days? What
Ever it is itís not substantial.

Slowly warms up again to a few days in
The 30ís! And the change late next week
Dosent look friendly for rain either.

Interesting times ahead

Very nice for a change no sun overcast with light showers.
Cool breeze from South 23c was good break from hot spell.
Open windows for fresh air from too much A/C over past 5 days.

Nice 2mm overnight but more would be nice. Looks like the rain band is breaking up once it gets past Melbourne

1.3mm so far. Cracked 35 again yesterday. Wind has returned to North here despite big pressure rise overnight. 22/17 now with sun glare through an alto stratus type arrangement.

G'day from over the border thought i'd pop my head in seeing as there isn't much activity on SA forums, can honestly say that this December has been one of the hottest I've experienced since the 90's/early 000's

But having that been said we still have Jan/Feb to go yet even though the temps for this week coming are relatively mild being in the high 20's and low 30's it wont take long for mother nature to turn the oven back up to marrow boiling temps again in 2019

Well said, in 1990s we had normal 30c to 35c.
Now 35c to 42c for Northern Country and Milura always hottest town 35c to 45c.
We think 30c to 35c not that hot and now 35c to 42c is too hot for us.
See what happens in New Year will be devil Oven to come.

Maybe another mm overnight, great waking up to thunder again but fog has rolled in to block the view of the stormy sky.

Couple of MM's overnight, SSW breeze, very cloudy.

Might get the odd passing shower today, quite humid now.

We got 0.25mm from a lunchtime shower, then the sun came out for an hour or two, humid-as, but instead of a storm, we got a fresh southerly seabreeze arrive to diffuse it all frown

edit - 28.5C max

2mm of heavy rain with a little hail here and there for good measure yesterday evening in a localised storm with some rolling thunder and lightning. Shame it was still daylight. No rain recorded at Yarrawonga airport by the look of WZ stats.

Steamy around central ranges this morning. Currently 25.1/18.3 at home with very light SE breeze atm. Pretty unstable sky and can see showers storms to E and NE from here.

We will cool off here as Melbourne seabreeze funnels through the "gap" later, some models suggest a chance of a shower or storm around the C ranges this arvo. Would have thought we are S and W of where we need to be but terrain can help. Fingers crossed.

Backwater/Airly/Weirs Crossing for the "mountain bikers" Samboz.

Had a storm here briefly mid arvo, 0.25mm, 31C max.

December rain = 46.5mm.
