That waterspout was NOT from today. That footage was from years ago, November 2012 or something like that.

A rumbley afternoon here but as usual most activity has gone around us..

Neat waterspout E&S.

And still the cells keep coming, It's been thundering on and off for hours. It was bucketing down a little while ago although it's eased off now. I'm in a gap between rain trains. I see that OH has now built up a decent total of 13 mm.

I just thought I might post a final wrap-up of Sydney temperatures for the event:

The numbers include this morning's bonus additions at coastal sites.

So it was quite a pronounced heatwave inland, the 12 day average being 8 degrees above the long term average at Penrith. That must be unusual, even for a short record station like Penrith (23 years)

Bankstown, a long term station (50 years), managed 7 degrees above its long term average.

Even OH, cooled to a within a few degrees of average by sea breezes most days, finished 4 above average over the 12 days.

Bellambi had two brief spikes of heat around the time of the 9:00 reset, one on the 1st and one this morning. These pushed it two above its average for the 12 days.

BOM Sydney forecast has belatedly been updated to better reflect what is happening and match the STW.

Quote:
Sydney area
Cloudy. High (80%) chance of showers and thunderstorms, easing later in the evening. Winds southerly 25 to 40 km/h decreasing to 15 to 25 km/h in the late evening. Strong and squally winds near thunderstorms.

Lol. They clearly read these forums.

What was different about this heatwave though is that dewpoint stayed comfortably above 16.0 when usually heatwaves had dewpoints stay often below 10. This probably led to a build up of some sort to storms which we often miss just usually a dry change.

The local PWS which often reads just above saw a high temperature of 42.7 degrees and a dew point of 22.4 degrees. With most of the rain over I have recorded 18.5mm a good return for the forecast.

Downside to living in a unit, can't install a rain gauge anywhere. mad

According to radar, rainfall since 9 am puts my place in the green (second shade of green) zone. I note stations not too far but far enough when it comes to convective rain to my north are reading 30+ MMS with Merrylands West on 48 mm.

I'd say my place should have received somewhere around 30 MMS. Great rain, Just what the doctor ordered after this extended heat with a nice cool down. Windows and doors a open!

Great storm day, many many flangs. Seems like there were more CGs than CCs as each boom was a flang whether near or a bit further afar.

I agree that the runs of heat lately have had a more humidity and higher DPs than what I'm used to. Not bad if it ends in regular storms and rain like we've been having.

Well the southerly was only here for 5 minutes before it quickly became a scud fest. Some good gust associated with the change but seems to be easing off somewhat now.

Looking back in retrospect today was an amazing day for storm potential, the way it just improved from the morning sounding which was grim. There was a decent amount of lower level moisture. Slight capping with the grey line to the right of the temperature (my guess), to hold of storms till the afternoon.

Southerly came through here about 7 pm.all the storms so far are moving down from the NW just missing me to my SW moving SE,but they are back building to the NW so we should get something before long, plenty of lightning and distant thunder.

Cool, overcast and a bit windy here this morning. It's the first time it's been cooler than 20 degrees at Sydney OH since Christmas. Soundings show this cloud sticking around until tomorrow evening so I think it will struggle to make 23 today.

There were some useful falls around Sydney yesterday afternoon and evening. After the storms finished around 8:00PM here, there was steady light rain until the small hours. Near me, OH finished with 26 mm, Chatswood with 19mm. The Illawarra and Central Coast did well but it looks like the Hunter missed out. The change seems to have stalled around Taree.

Anyway, apart from drizzle or light showers adding up to a millimetre or so, the rain's finished, so all this cloud can go away now.

Our minimum of 12.6 a welcome change, the lowest since our week of single digit minima the week before Christmas. Love the highlands.

Had to go up to Tamworth during the week last week, relentless 37's and 38's, but no 40s like down here in the Hunter.
The current change won't reach there today either, still 36C.
At least the change has reached home, and some reprieve for a couple of days.
Most places running well above average for Jan, and may challenge Jan 2017 if it keeps up, which was relentlessly hot but with no individual or daily records, Tocal running at 37.6C.
Ironically Feb 2017 was even hotter, and many individual daily records were broken, including the Feb record for the Sydney Basin and Hunter.
