Great pictures Eddy and Jack

Welcome aboard ccfu.

That Westerly broke through here about an hour or so ago and I see it's pushed back the sea breeze. They sky is looking interesting although there's not much on the radar. Storms seem to be forming just out to sea and zipping away. A very lightning-active cell passed ove Broken Bay a little while ago.

EDIT: just started raining from a cell that sprinted across from near Windsor and developed further as it went.

Yes, a bit of a fizzer. It's back to clear, sunny with Westerly winds and temperatures in the low 30s. The action seems to have shifted North. Chatswood picked up a millimetre from that shower 90 minutes ago.

Forecast for tonight: Clear. It will plunge to 15-17 degrees across Sydney, cooler than it's been since before Christmas. Tomorrow will be sunny, 25-29.

After tomorrow, it will warm up for a couple of days, than flip into a cooler but still fairly dry pattern.

Bugger me sideways, this is one nasty front! shocked

Down to 7.7° C with ~30-35 knot squalls...BRRRR! Frigid! eek

Yet Cooma AP, ~400 m lower, is straddling upwards ~18° C whistle crazy poke

Nevermind! Cooma AP just plummeted to 12.8° C as of now.

Well, cold for summer anyway.

Looking back we have not had a proper NW flow leading to a warm day since December 2nd (in the Sydney Basin), pretty impressive for Summer imo. Also loving the noticeable drier air a nice change from what we've endured.

Today the Sydney basin is low-mid 30's, Mount Boyce on 20. That's usually what I see in summer under much more frequent northwesterlies. This summer has been much different, as Ashes said.

Today is a proper northwesterly flow. In January we had plenty of hot days but winds were from the east much more frequently with North westerlies unusually rare, and Mount Boyce was consistently as warm as the middle ring in Sydney which doesn't usually happen.

For example Jan 2009 vs Jan 2019, monthly average max for Parramatta and Mount Boyce:

Jan 2009 ... 31.3 ... 26.1
Jan 2019 ... 32.0 ... 29.0

Jan 2009 wasn't as hot in Western Sydney as Jan 2019, however it was much sunnier and drier with much stronger circulation and those proper hot dry days. It felt more summery. In Jan 2019 Mount Boyce was comparatively much hotter due to weak circulation.

And to think all these differences come down to a slight shift (few degrees north/south) and strength of the Tasman high. Amazing stuff.

Had a good storm interrupt my cricket game this afternoon, It didn't look like like much and it didn't last long. Some pea size hail and some brief strong winds, at a guess the winds were 90-100kmph mark. I did manage some photos and video, I will check them out later.

The rain yesterday was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Almost a complete white out as I was driving, could hardly see the car ahead of me. It was a bit scary actually.

Disappointing about the new weather pattern, we got enough sunny dry weather in winter to last me the rest of my life.

Re Jac0b: January's air masses were extremely hot - 850 temps in the high 20s, but the hot air didn't reach the coast. East of the ranges, the air mass was mixed with maritime air, especially sea breezes. Today's air mass is not particularly hot - 850 temps about 20, but a NW air stream brought the hot air to the coast. Sydney gets its hottest temps in a NW air stream. It gets record temps when a very hot air mass coincides with a NW circulation strong enough to reach the coast.

Re Eddy - look forward to seeing the photos and video.

Re Cool change: that oassed through Ulladulla around 7:00 PM, dropping the temp by 7 degrees so far, to 19.

EDIT: change reached Point Perpendicular around 7:25PM. It's about 18-19 degrees behind the change.

This is the structure I was talking about.

Quite possibly the best back end of a storm Ive ever seen. This was that black cored storm that tracked from Gloucester all the way down to Seal Rocks and every time I had a look on radar there was always some black in it.

Thanks Steve777, still have some photos and vids to go through yet.

Edit my photo does no justice to it!!

Cool change came thru about half hour ago from the South as still showing in a wide arc across the Sydney Metro on the BOM wind radar.

Saw some frequent lightning off the top of a thunderhead from my house at 8pm. Rather impressive given that the closest cell would have been around Nelson Bay.

Forecast shows 4°-5° C lows as far as the eye can see.
