Interesting to see BOM forecasting up to 300mm for Cooktown Tuesday and up to 200mm on Wednesday; not often you see get to see this.

Yeah Pacman according to forecasts it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the Low/cyclone will track back across the cape into the coral Sea.. pretty wet for the North of Cairns folk....

But what really annoys me is this afternoon's headline from the idiots at the "Daily Mail"..

"Thousands are told to brace for Cyclone Penny as devastating tropical storm bears down on Australia's coast"

I think we are desperately in need of legislation to stop tabloid Journalism and facebook/social media sites purporting to be real news...maybe we are already past the point of no return...is the world already too far gone..too dumbed down..?

The danger of inflated reporting is 'the boy who cried wolf to many times'
If TC's are over dramatized un-necessarily and repeatedly, and nothing much eventuates .People stop listening and send news to the keeper and yawn
Then when a real emergency occurs people send it to the keeper and become complacent.

I absolutely agree. It's down-right dangerous. Scaremongering at its best (worst). The great unwashed believe it, people at work were talking about how they had to prepare for a Cat 4, I have no idea where they got that titbit from...

Sigh...

Anyways, what are people's thoughts on the rain for Cairns area????

I would like to point out that now the MT has formed we have had no rain. If the current model forecasts come to pass we will have no real rain for the next 10 days.
I have always said that I find MT's to be a let down most of the time.
Wettest December on record for a lot of locations with no MT. smile

Happy new year all.

What a windy night! Some pretty decent gusts woke me up regularly throughout the night.
Not feeling confident about any rainfall today. BoM saying 4-20 today and 8-30 tomorrow for MAP.

Happy New Year all.

Spent the night with friends down on the beach, camp fire crackling, live music in the background, and gentle breeze. Great night and great company.

Ended up with 3308mm for the year out of my tin. A tiny little bit different to the huge figures of around 700mm out in Charters Towers.

Not sure what New Year Penny is going to end up doing but like most women I am sure it will be whatever she wants😜

Feels like this event (Penny) won't give us much - isn't she too far north now?

The further north she goes now the more likely we will get something if and when she returns. But you are right in that we will get diddly squat as she travels east

Sounds awesome Westy, do you know the last Cyclone crossed at Weipa?

Will be interesting to see how you guys fare with this system as im sure the BOM will be paying close attention to the obs there as Penny crosses over.

Cooktown 300mm and Cairns 80mm forecast rainfall have all been quashed which was feared would happen as this setup has shown before with any GOC cyclones feeder bands being blocked when another low pressure system forms close by in the coral sea.

With this setup we need TC Penny back in the Coral sea to witness anything noteworthy or to drag the monsoon down over us.

Cairns aero humidity is down to 53%, good laundry drying weather.

Not sure Pacman. Only just moved here. Quite a few trees down already and it's still 85km away.

You haven't had enough rain for the moment Pacman...?....I'm certainly not fearing a week or 2 of dryish weather...

Amen to that, Scott, am optimistic enough to have sown seeds of parsley, basil and celery which have all succumbed to sodden roots.
