Light drizzle falling here from that stalled trough. With the middle layer cloud deck and low level marine scum deck I can't see how most areas of the basin will even get above 20 today. Miserable, gloomy nuisance is all this is.

GFS fantasy hinting at a return to extended heat. Normally I wouldn't get my hopes up but it's been there for a few runs now and it nailed the heatwave we just had.
Should get a goat and make an offering to the appropriate deities to ensure it happens.

First session of day 4 has been washed out, where was this rain in Melbourne?

Come to think of it, I canít remember the last Sydney Test that didnít have some sort of rain delay.

Looking at it, since 2009 5 Sydney tests have had rain delays. 2009 and 2012-2015 were dry, the rest have had rain.

Looking at OH, if today stays below 20 it will be the first time in 3 years that January has had a sub 20 max. Currently it is 19.1c. Much nicer than 38c, gives the houre a chance to cool down and gives the AC a rest. Each to their own I guess.

What a sh1t of a day, 21.7c was my top today, too cool to get out and mow lawns today.
Currently 19.6c with some of the finest drizzle you will ever see.

You need to get tested for Alzheimer's. 2016 was almost a total washout.

With few exceptions the Sydney test, and any limited over match, has an uncanny knack of picking a day(s) of rain in between lengthy spells of fine weather.
This year has not failed to disappoint.

So now we've lost temp data for Penrith. Not a good start to the year for the basin sites. Four have incomplete data for the year. A year that is six days old.

Penrith
Terrey Hills
Sydney Harbour
Badgerys Creek

Badgerys has been offline for about 3 weeks now so not sure what's going on there.

Thatís what I said, that I canít remember the last test without rain... Iíd be worried to have Alzheimerís at 23! And it used to be annoying, but with the way weíre playing now it would be better if this rain happened in Melbourne.

Got to 20.8 today. Surprised that nothing got picked up in the gauge, there was a lot of drizzle about today.

I'm peripherally interested in cricket but not much into its traditions. But why can't they play the game when it rains, even marginal showers like today? Baseball continues in light rain. What about England, known to experience the odd spot of cloudy, wet weather. Do they stop playing if it's overcast, even without rain? Does drizzle too light to register stop games over there?

I think the game needs a few changes so that days like today don't cause interruptions. Yesterday was fair enough, with heavy showers and lightning about, but today? If that's not possible, test matches in NSW/ACT should only be played in inland centres like Canberra or Bathurst.

Anyway, a lot of time will probably be lost tomorrow as well, with 850 humidity over Sydney 90%+ until late tomorrow afternoon.

Gloomy, almost windless and 22 degrees in Sydney this morning. That's actually a degree bonus on yesterday's maximum. The drizzle seems to have stopped but soundings and 850 temps show the cloud sticking around until early tomorrow.

In spite of persistent drizzle here for much of yesterday, at Moore Park and presumably at OH in between those locations, the OH rain gauge did not register a drop of rain. Nowhere in Sydney seems to have registered more than 0.2 mm.

So humid, overcast but with little or no rain, temperature stuck around 20 degrees all day and all night. Warm clammy nights, gloomy days which feel cold if the wind picks up. My least favourite weather - whinge whinge whinge...

I don't mind one or two days like this in between heat events. It gives the house a chance to cool before the next heat event.

However, when we get overcast stratus, south-easterly, low-20's weather like this for a week in summer then it gets annoying. I remember summer 2011-2012, especially in December, almost every day was like this, not good at all.

In a word, it's safety. Low light and bowling up to 150kmph is a recipe for disaster for the batsmen, and a slippery ball leads to beamers (full tosses at the head), and the risk of slipping when coming in to bowl and doing damage to a bowler as well. Additionally, playing in heavy rain means the wicket gets wet, and players would have to bat on a sticky (drying and humid) wicket, that has variable bounce, leading to the risk of injury. Having said that, I don't think conditions were that bad yesterday, definitely not bad enough for light to stop play in the afternoon. As you say, if this test was in England I doubt play would be stopped. Unfortunately there's not much chance of the game going to inland NSW, as Canberra is only this season hosting its first test. Cricke is very inflexible... If a pink ball was used then play under lights could be done, which I think is essential, all cricket should use the pink ball now.

Onto the weather. Dreary day today, more like mid to late autumn than high summer, but I'm very much enjoying the cooler weather, I hope it lasts.

I like warmer weather but admittedly I'm kind of enjoying this weather as well. After two weeks of hot and/or humid weather, a couple of cool cloudy days are nice. It should be gone tomorrow and we look forward to more thunderstorms in this fantastic storm season.

There's no wind today so it feels mild, unlike yesterday which was breezy and felt genuinely cool in the wind.

Very much liking the look of the current GFS run. Shows a retrograding upper low moving towards the central NSW coast inside 7 days. Yes please. Storms before, storms after....and more movement in the uppers towards the end of the run. Much more the sort of model run I like. Keep it up!

Pizzle here on and off today. Very dry again other than damp pizzle grass. Dams almost given back what December gave. Still very low for me and many others....

Looking like a nice stream of moisture arriving in time for storms, hopefully those who missed out last time get a nice soaking. Along with the rest of us getting rid of those deficits.
