Thank you McBobbings - interesting. We don't want to risk player safety.

Re weather, after looking brighter this morning and starting to warm up, the gloom closed in around 9:30 AM, with drizzle mostly sticking around until about 4:00 PM. So after being stuck on 20 all night, it was stuck on 21 all day.

It's brightening up a bit now. The Sun even tried to come out, enough to get the cicadas going. They've been quiet since Saturday.

Work colleagues from Kiama said they were awoken by thunder around 4:30-5:00am. Slept right through it here at Shellharbour just 15kms north.

And that's what happened. The record will show that at Sydney OH, the temperature range for January 7 was 18.3 to 25.6. The 18.3 occurred at or shortly after 9:00 on the 6th, the 25.6 just before 9:00 on the 8th, 48 hours apart.

So 18-26 looks like a typical Sydney Summer day, slightly cool by recent standards, especially the minimum. The day itself was in fact a gloomfest with the temperature stuck within a degree of 21 for most of the day and night.

In either case, a bit different to the same day last year (22.4 - 43.4).

Right now it's sunny, warm and fairly humid with a light breeze and the cicadas making up for lost time. Maybe some storms later.

There's a new thread - and BoM has 'severe storms likely' right on the Illawarra.

GFS has mid 40's for Wednesday next week. EC not as keen with high 30's. Either way its sure going to be a stinker.

It's looking like the typical mid Jan heatwave it arrives like almost clockwork without fail. The difference with this one is that it will follow a wet couple months especially in the basin, expect a humid heatwave.

Nyngan and Coonamble look like standout forecasts to me at this stage. Consecutive days of 46C would be a good effort

Wish meteye would add a 45-48c instead of just colour coding everything the same for 45c+. Makes it a lot easier to see extreme spots especially since were in Australia. During heatwaves half the map is that dark maroon 45c+ colour haha.

With heat coming like this, we must get storms in the afternoons as well, because there is still a trough inland.

Does look to be a somewhat humid stormy heatwave unlike the typical dry ones we get this time of year. Wouldn't be surprised if we get more sea foggy days either, the SST anomalies have spiked up to +4C just off the Illawarra.

WZ forecasting DPs of 23-24C during the peak of the heat for coastal SYD. Will get pretty uncomfortable.
