A strong ridge of high pressure will develop over Victoria late this week and under current model predictions remain with us until at least Jan 18th.

Could lead to 7 days of 40+ temps in the North. Temps in the south less certain.

Min 8.6 Max 30.9 and low DP's a feature today. Currently 25.1 with DP up to 7.7 as Melbournes seabreeze has wafted up here though its very weak and near calm.

Tomorrow afternoon and into Sunday morning actually expecting a local wind event from SE or SSE. Should be pretty full on locally.

Real hot days for Melbourne and coast Monday and Tuesday

Bit of a stronger change Thursday/Friday with maybe 5-10mm for many but looking like heat won't be far away again.

Really, really dry out here in the west now, about 5mm since the mid December rain event here in Portland, many inland areas haven't recorded anything since.

Somehow got to 36.5C here as the wind gradually veered from NW'ly to now near due south.

Hotter than the 32C BOM predicted, maybe the swing to the south was a bit delayed.

Will be able to open up the house over coming hours to prepare for the hotter days looming Mon-Wed next week?

Drove (again!) to and from Geelong past couple of days. The area between west of Bairnsdale and east of Traralgon (and north and south of there - which would include Petros' and Samboz's areas) is really showing the effects of the mid-late 2018 drought. Conditions have re-intensified after some earlier scraps of decent rain.

Large areas are on the verge of (or maybe there) of being 100s hectares of dust - other areas have little if any grass left and what is left is just a cm or two high.

Between us we have covered Barinsdale to Portland and I can say it is very dry the whole way from Geelong to Portland, especially from Geelong to Colac was areas of rased dust even with only light winds.

Tb/logansi- Iíd extend that cured area of grass
Back through the Latrobe Valley to aroundthe
Moe area and out north of there around the Tanjil
South/hill end areas itís very dry!
The strezleckis back west of me and down on
The flats through Traf/tarragon/Warragul arenít
That far away either, with the grass going off
At a rapid rate now. Iíd say all that area will be
Cured by mid next week

yeah I wouldn't be surprised if more than 80% of the Grassland curing map is at 100% cured by mid next week. I think this warm week will finish off any moisture we got over the past few weeks. This driest I have seen victoria since I became a vol.

Yeah its as dry as I've seen it since 2014 for Mid January. Bush is now just waiting for a big spike day - we are lucky we haven't had much wind but we are bound to have such a day before the season ends so we desperately need a rain event.

Yeah agree with u logansi/dawman.

I reckon weíre about 3-4 weeks ahead in terms
Of how dry it is around my area! Usually itís early
Feb when things are pretty well cured around
Here.
But yeah just means a longer period of potential
Bad fire days.
Canít really see any worth while rainfall in the
Next week or so, accessg hinting at maybe 5-10mm
Thursday/Friday next week?? But thatís clutching
At straws this far out.
5mm here so far for January

40.3c 3.50pm at Cool SW breeze moves in about 6pm very gusty wind then at 9.25pm 19c.

Looks like next few days will be very hot Northern of Ranges and cool breeze weaken by Monday to warm stable nights.

Very surprised we didn't have much Gusty NW hot winds and looks like drought surface brown and cracking.

I am sick of trough starts firing thunderstorms good rains in NSW and Leave Victoria bone dry.

Need trough sits west Victoria to Queensland bring humid thundery.

Breazy day of 22 here in Portland, thats now 10 of that last 13 days in that 29.5-22.5 bracket.

Mildura now looking at 42 Monday, 46 Tuesday, 46 Wednesday, 41 Thursday, 41 Friday. Anyone know of a previous double 46? Even during the Black Saturday heatwave the didn't do that. It will also be there 2nd and 3rd 46 this month, another record I can't see.

The amount of heat inland at the moment is massive.

Yeah itís pretty impressive double 46c days!!
Most of vic slides into severe heatwave conditions
From tomorrow through Thursday.
Even for my area weíre looking at 3 day straight
Of 38-39c which is pretty rare for southern vic!

With no real totals showing more than 5mm!
Then it looks to heat up quickly once again

Really hating this really hot weather. With 4 days of 40+ here I'll be struggling to keep my garden plants alive - giving up on my lawn.

I've really never liked Summer, I like it even less when it gets to these temps. I hope our power supply manages to be maintained trying to keep business running and everyone's AC's on. Love Winter, enjoy Spring and Autumn and tolerate summer. Although I don't think I'd enjoy the winter that they seem to be having in a few places in the norther hemisphere.

No signs of decent storms either - I'll take Summer if we get some decent summer storms - strike out so far. Yeah ok I'm winging.

The only instance of a double 46 at the Mildura Airport site I can see is 46.3 and 46.0 in Feb 2017.

There was a triple 46+ run of days at the Mildura PO site in Jan 1939.

Summer 1892 and and 1905/6 had three triple runs of 46+ but some of those daily readings are too high to look real.

25.7 for a high today after a low of 10.7, very windy last night and this morning but just breezy atm and 22.5.

Interesting to see differences between UKmet and EC, Ukmet has some rain showers, storms around from Wednesday, EC has pathetic attempt Thursday and a bit better Friday but in model world that may as well be next year.

Because Gums trees and dry grass is killer now.

Last broken record 43.8c in 2014

New record 44.6c on 4th January 2019.

Last Saturday Jan 12th was 40.3c

With people returning from holidays this week, the Victorian electrical system loading looks set to touch 8,500 MW this afternoon, wholesale prices at this stage look to rise from $92 (the average so far this year) to $10,500 for nearly 2 hours (low wind generation in Vic/SA and a Loy Yang A generating unit offline).

That will be Victoria's highest load for 2018/19.

At this stage, the load demand is set to exceed 9,000 MW tomorrow. We better hope that it is a windier day!

37.6 for a high today after a low of 13.9, currently 25.1 with a DP of 16. Windy evening but dropping back now for what will be a pretty steamy evening for us.

Similar here to Samboz, 41C that backed down to 32C by 5pm by grace of the seabreeze.

....but its now stopped, so no chance to "purge the house" frown

Falling nicely here now down to 26, think we may be behind the weak change.

People in south are lucky as no cool breeze for Northern Country is less sleep.

2am - 24.4c

4pm - 42.2c

11pm - 30.1c

We have big problem next week another Heatwave with dangerous NW winds late of week.

A cooler 19C minimum here last night, calm sunny 29C her now, seems strange that we are only to get to 32C today, must be a seabreeze calculated to arrive earlier?

Third day in a row above 37 here. Don't laugh North of the divide folk, nearly at 600m here,

Was 37.8 by midday after a low of 16.7. With squally winds developing this afternoon dropped to 20.5 by late arvo but along with several places who had early wind shift the temp has been climbing since about 6pm. Currently 23.8 DP 9.7 and dead calm, some virga around also.

Ukmet has decent rain for here in the early hours. Was the only model that had this activity of sorts today a few days out so fingers crossed

Overcast day, with several periods of virga touching the ground, 32.5C with only a trace of mud at the bottom of the rain gauge. Very muggy, another uncomfortable night looming here.

The calm conditions would have been appreciated by the firey's who are working on multiple fire starts in Vic's SE ranges after yesterdays dry lighting moved through.

Just up on Nth foothills Dooga. Storms up around Eden/Merimbula are magic this time of the year, provided they dont leave you stranded from bushfire road closures wink

Had the odd storm along the foothills to our nth overnight, and probably about 1mm from the sth edge of it all down here. Very muggy and overcast 25C here atm, ....hoping for an arvo storm.

A period of clear sky coupled with no breeze has seen temp soar to 36C here.

....in our own "heat bubble", as Sale 33C, Mt Moornapa 27C and Traralgon 31C.

Should boost our chances for a storm over coming hours I hope.

....and did end up with a nice little 30 minute pair of storms that back-built from a light storm line grazing us from the NW just now. Auto gauge sitting on 11mm so a handy 10mm from it (about a mm from early morning storms). Temp now back to 22.5C.

Grass around the Maffra area will much appreciate this!

31.4 here in Red Cliffs today. Hit the supermarket, as soon as the doors opened this morning, to beat the rush, and so did a lot of others. I understand the town was a ghost town, during the hot weather. wink smile

Should we extend the dates on this thread to include the end of this week or start a new one?

May aswell just extent - wish I could edit it. TBH we should just have a 2019 summer heatwave thread at the rate we are going.

yeah extend the date to at least this weekend. I thought of another thread but in reality this heat wave is just an extension of the same weather at play from last week. - A continuation of the previous week with a couple of milder days to break the heat.
