On 9 news this evening, the weather section they said Brisbane was going for the hottest day on record tomorrow? That can't be right?

5 mm here tonight. This coming week looks quite promising for the entire SE including the D Downs after the heat. God knows we all need it. ASG.

Lol, we're about 7 degrees away from that, and 3 away from the March record. Maybe 9 News was counting Gatton's high temperature as part of Brisbane...

Not enough rain to even wet the street here this evening. Aside from the 5.5mm we had a month go, we are still waiting for our first rain of the year. Only decent rain we have had since October was on Dec 15 during a heavy shower where we had 38mm. This is beyond unbelievable. I hold out hope however that this week will produce the goods for us here in West Warwick.

15 mm of rain here at Sunnybank Hills on Friday, March 8th.

Total for March so far: 21 mm.

Yes, Warwick is suffering terribly. The last time I looked, Leslie Dam was at (i think) 5.5% of capacity. Its lowest ever value was about 4& back in early 1995.

The truth is that some inland areas to the west of Brisbane are forecast to experience their hottest March day on record. Brisbane's highest ever recorded temperature was 43.2 degrees celsius on January 26th, 1940. There is no indication that we're going to get anywhere near that.

With daytime temp maxs how much does day length contribute? Just thinking more sunlight = more heat energy. Its now March and days are getting shorter. Would the same setup make for scorching January days?

It contributes but is overshadowed by the effects from the synoptic setup and solar elevation angle (how high in the sky the sun gets) on a given day.

2nd image above - ACCESS-C accumulated precip between 4am today and midnight tonight suggesting northern parts of SE QLD more favoured for convection today (partly due to less strong capping up there) but with the outside chance of hit and miss stuff further south. Image courtesy of Weatherzone Layers. As always, never treat the exact positions of those precip areas literally.

Still looking like some inland locations are within striking distance of breaking their March max temp records today/tomorrow too (or at least challenged).

1st image above - latest Extreme Weather Index for max temps for today from the EC ensemble (+1 is good confidence of very hot temps for this time of year and area while -1 or purple is good confidence of very cool temps for this time of year and area).

I hope so, as a pom I'm completely over this summer. I was in Sydney last week and it was a novelty being able to sit in the sun and not immediately feel like my skin was melting.

Thank you Ken. Very informative maps. Hopefully this heat is on the way out now.

I feel so sorry for all the school kids without aircon, so much money being wasted on stuff that doesnt matter but our children dont matter apparently. Sorry Mod, there are things that need to be said & this is one of them!

On that topic of non airconned school rooms. Why don't they get direct solar connected air con units - eg they work when the sun is out and only during the day. On most days when the sun is out its warm to hot. So no running costs. Really its a simple solution. If it becomes cloudy, then so what - things start to cool down anyway

Hence my example :

Schools must be stupid or something for not using products like this. So backward is the thinking that only mains power will do
