TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for HEAVY RAINFALL

For people in parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:46 am Thursday, 10 January 2019.

Locally heavy rain likely between Bowen and Townsville, particularly with thunderstorms.
Plan Image

Weather Situation: At 10am AEST Thursday, ex-tropical cyclone Penny was located inland near Charters Towers. Bands of thunderstorms with locally very heavy rainfall have moved onto the coast and nearby inland overnight and through this morning on the southern edge of the system.

Locally heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding, is expected to continue over the warning area with thunderstorms during the next few hours.

Isolated six hourly rainfall totals between 150mm and 200mm are possible.

Thunderstorm activity is also expected to develop about the coast and ranges near and north of Townsville through to Cairns during today and may also generate some locally heavy rainfall - Severe Thunderstorm Warnings will be issued as necessary.

A trough associated with ex-tropical cyclone Penny is expected to move northwards along the tropical east coast later today and through Friday, gradually shifting the focus for thunderstorm activity with heavy rainfall further northwards.

An initial minor flood warning has been issued for the Burdekin River. A Flood Watch remains in place for coastal catchments between Proserpine and Cape Tribulation.

Locations which may be affected include Mingela, Clare, Woodstock, Giru, Ayr, Alva Beach and Magnetic Island.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Central Coast and Whitsundays and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

Strathbogie, inland south of Ayr, recorded 432mm in the 12 hours to 10am Thursday.

Groper Creek, near Ayr, recorded 187mm rainfall in the 12 hours to 10am Thursday.

Eton Vale, inland just south of Strathbogie, recorded 171mm in the 12 hours to 10am Thursday.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Thursday.

The centre of ex-Penny appears to be just North of Pentland at the moment, heading WNW.

The fact that most of this system has completely skipped around Townsville is astounding.

just cant fathom it hey. Tropical low and a coastal trough in January and best it can come up with locally is 0-40mm across the city. last month 100km north of us got hammered, today its 100km south. this isnt rain shadow issues either, these are systems coming from the east.

Rain showers this morning. Naff all in them though. My rainfall total is like watching paint dry. Pissed off that after 7 days of amber alerts the most rain in one day was 11mm, 6mm on another day 4 days later and nothing in between.

Another 3mm overnight. Paint drying is more interesting at the moment. This should be our second highest rain fall month and basically we have had 5/8ths of sfa.
