RE car temps, depends on the model. Mine has the thermometer next to the radiator so it always over reads, by 2-3c when moving, and after 10 minutes stationary up to 10c.

My car thermometer seems to be pretty accurate over the range of temps to which it has been exposed, -2° to 44°. It is normally within a degree of nearby BOM sites when I've had a chance to check. This afternoon it was showing a rather boring 18°. Occasionally it has odd spikes, usually in clear, sunny weather on a freeway.

----

Sydney Airport has picked up 10 mm so far this evening. I just had a look outside and it's been raining here. There are showers about. There may likely be a few more good totals near the coast by morning.

My car is pretty spot on, it’s located on the side mirror so not influenced thankfully by the engine.

Ah the old cold chase. On winter nights I thought were going to stay clear and calm, I used to stick a thermometer on a fence post in this open tussock swamp area at the bottom of the valley behind my house in the mid Blue Mountains. I frequently recorded -5C which usually correspond to about 1C - 0C up at the house, a few -6C’s and once an astounding -9C! I would sometimes take my digital thermometer down in the morning to verify, which it did. That layer of cold was easily disturbed though, you only needed a little breeze to come up overnight and the differential between the swamp and the house would vanish.

You could really feel the difference when you got down on the flat and little things like the tips of my dogs coat freezing after she swam in the ice covered pond (any excuse to get wet for her) definitely gave a sense of it being properly cold. I suppose it’s little things like that, my dogs coat freezing because it was -5C make me rather dismissive of feels like temps when I hear them reported.

-7C would be pretty cold for Jindabyne I would think? The lake must have some moderating effect on the temp?

I see there’s some cold nights on the cards for the CT’s too. -5C for Bathurst is pretty good, Marrangaroo will probably be about -7C or -8C that being the case.. I sorta think that Marrangaroo is a bit of a frost hollow/outlier in terms of minimums on the CT’s. That -12C it recorded last year was pretty nuts.
I noticed at the same time that Katoomba’s lowest over the coming forecast period is a paltry 3C... that doesn’t seem quite right if Bathurst is getting -5C. Seems to be a bit of trend this year in elevating the forecast minimums for Katoomba in relation to other areas in the CT forecast region. A -5C at Bathurst would surely correspond to a 0C in Katoomba.

I've done a few snow chases. But the lowest I've seen was actually during the record cold day last year where my car temp got down to -4C here in western sydney.

I find that for my car its often accurate outside of the sun. If i'm driving with the sun out it would over read by a degree or two.

The coldest temp I’ve had was in Canberra on a clear crisp Winters morn with -4 on the way to Tuggeranong. Second was the snow chase to Kangaloon with -1c and ICE WARNING as wet flakes fell.

Cool, overcast with persistent light to moderate rain here. I'm in the path of a rain train moving in from the ENE.

Overnight rain had been concentrated on the coastal parts of Sydney, rapidly dropping off as you move away from that area. Noting that Nobbys had a minimum of 7.8, with lower readings in the Hunter, it must have been mostly clear up there.

Unfortunately I don't have a car thermometer and my car is way too reliable and trouble free to get rid of for another one! And it's worth basically nothing so I might as well drive it until it dies. Hopefully my next car will have one smile

But I reckon the coldest I would have driven would be about -5 on the very cold Highlands mornings.

I saw that someone on the Tamworth weather page recorded -11°C at Bendemeer and had recorded as low as -13°C there before. It is in the NT's sort of between Tamworth and Armidale, located in a small river valley at 820m ASL.

–7° C isn't too special for Jindabyne, and the lake isn't large enough to moderate temperatures, and neither is Eucumbene. Jindy—that is, Lake Jindabyne, lies in a deep valley dropping from ~1,100 m AMSL at the crest of East Jindabyne-Tyrolean Village (climbing just above 1,200 m atop the hill), then steeply descending to 902 m AMSL at the lake surface, encircled by steep escarpments. Where I commonly fish around Widows Inlet, on the Western angle of Jindy, the temperature often plummets notably lower than Cooma, dare I say about ~2° C colder oftentimes...I wouldn't be surprised if the record low down there straddles the –14° C mark, or lower.

Doesn't compare to the North-Westernmost reaches of Lake Eucumbene, however; at Providence Portal, where the Eucumbene River flows into the lake, readings of –10° C or lower are not unheard-of each year, and the river itself (used to be part of the main lake before Snowy Hydro started pumping Eucumbene dry for energy since the closure of Hazelwood back in March 2017), often freezes-over from June through to September. I can wager a slightly warmer climate than Kiandra Chalet at Providence Portal, as it yields similar geography but lies at ~1,200 m AMSL as opposed to Kiandra's ~1,395 m AMSL.

On second thoughts, Providence Portal's geography is even more akin to a proper frost-hollow than Kiandra is; here's my splendid album of it from January, 2019, showing its vast meadows and surrounds—featuring Denison Mount, 1,397 m AMSL:

Maybe GFS wasn't on the drugs quite as much as it seemed, with ACCESS now showing a Sunday week rain event for the far south coast.
Bring it on!

I'll cancel building the ark though -

Persistent light rain here with bursts or moderate stuff. No where near enough as yet, hopefully those heavier falls push onshore as the ridge strengthens and then flow increases.

The BOM radar and obs are fine. The radar on Weatherzone, as well as "Layers", are stuck at around 7:20 AM, while obs are not available.

Brightening up here. Hasn't rained for a while.

Keenly waiting for a bout of heavy rain that is inching westwards along the East Hills line hopefully it keeps its shape. Looks like the warragamba should get a decent drop due to it, looking at some orographic lift.
