Just joined Ski....always enjoyed the no hype nature of this forum, so looking forward to more of the same over there in the future with what looks to be most of you lot over there already. Went with a name change though on the new site, now using my postcode instead.

I am Flowin along onto ski.com to the next generation of community forum for weather enthusiasts in the neNSW seQLD region.
I have lived in this region for around 45 years minus two years in TSV.
I still find it amazing how diverse our weather influences are in this region.
When our weather gets going it can go off with a bang, cause a lot of grief, and give us much more to learn and also enjoy. We have our boring weather periods as well.
Along the way I say big thank you to all who contribute and share knowledge, observations, experiences, opinions, and postulations, and the great pics and videos. It all creates a valuable online community.

Will all of the posts and information on this forum be archived somewhere? I'm sure a lot of it will be archived via the Wayback Machine, but the W.B doesn't always get everything.

I have also just jointed Ski.com.
I have used my previous name of "Comet"
I feel sad...and somewhat lost that WZ is closing.

Cool night of 10įC then a mild summers day of 25įC for Thursday. Just a bit of trivia. 😳🤓

I go away on holidays, come back to find my fave weather site is closing. I have been a member for 18 years and even though I don't post much, I have always been reading and lurking around, and learning so much from people like Ken.
I thought a couple of months ago how dated this site was and it probably was not surprising that 9 media decided to cut this place loose.
Also some of you may be aware that there is a recent court case that made the owner of sites like this liable for what is posted if it is libellous or hateful.
I wonder whether that was a consideration in the decision to close the weatherzone forum. They relied on volunteer moderators and this may not accord with their corporate responsibilities.
Anyway adios people. It has been great meeting some of you, especially when I was living in Cairns, and posting during some of the cyclones we went through. They will be remembered, as we shared experiences and fears together.
Cheers
James

Yes a real shame. Plenty of people, businesses and agencies used the information shared here to help with planning and response for both normal and severe weather.
Great work by the Mods over the years too, taking the heat out of things when needed.
I will be giving Ski a go too.

Just wanting to check... is ski the official new replacement? Iíve seen a few other sites mentioned, but more seem to be migrating to ski?

The 2 main sites are Ski.com and 2nd site is The Australian Weather forum. Both really good. I am on both and so are a few others. Ski is brilliant and probably has the most of the ex WZ members.

AWF is very similar layout to here and Jake is restructuring the site to improve it. Both really good. There is another site but ............. that is all I will say.

Hopefully see you on Ski or AWF or both.

I've had a bit of a look at both sites and think will go with Aus weather Forum there just seems to be too much of an over riding influence on skiing and snow Country weather on that other site which I find off putting considering our whereabouts.

A final Weatherzone post after 18 years! It's been amazing - some incredible events in that time. Black Saturday, the Queensland floods and close to 500mm in one afternoon here in Bellingen are the standouts for me. I'm now over at ski, hope to catch many of you there as we head into Spring storm season. Kev

Not sure if youíre still reading this thread but was meaning to get back to you about that, sorry.
Deep accumulations of small hail happen pretty often in various parts of the world. A typical setup for it involves very cold air aloft as you mentioned, often associated with a cold pool/upper low, reasonable moisture through the low to mid levels, steep lapse rates, and modest instability (doesnít have to be huge). When this is combined with weak steering winds, you get slow moving or even stationary cumulonimbus clouds dumping lots of small hail over the same area for awhile.
Accumulations can sometimes be up to a metre or more.
