Looks like the first sub-zero temperature here this year. Reached 0.2 degrees on the 6th of June. Already at 3.7 degrees, when i saw the clear skies I was like here we go. You can all be assured i'll be having a sleep in.

Just drove back from the Lake Macquarie area. It was a beautiful starry night with a 3/4 Moon and small Moonlit cumulus clouds.

Car thermometer report:

As low as 4° in the in the flat rural areas near Cooranbong, with patches ground fog.
On the M1/F3 it was mostly 5° to 7° with patches fog. 8° at home. Even at Sydney OH it's down to 8.6°,

This morning would be almost perfect for that, 6°C and a 26km/h westerly.

Low of -12.0°C at Perisher, -10.0 at Thredbo Top and -9.1 at Cooma Ap are the coldest. Followed by plenty of -6 to -4 temps on the Tablelands.

Surprised to see frost out here this morning, usually we are warmer than Albion Park at night, they got 3.3 but there was a bit of wind. It must've dropped all night here to give a light frost and slight icing of the windscreen so it probably got down to 1 or 2°C

A note on temperatures and 'apparent temperatures' around Sydney at 7:30.

Sydney OH: 6.5, 0.0
Bankstown: 4.7, 2.4
Richmond : 3.7, 0.9
Camden : 1.6, -0.2

(Everest: ??, ??)

I note in passing that the wind, used in calculation 'apparent temperature', is measured at Fort Denison 1 km to the East for OH. However, I exoect that the OH site is almost certainly, like the rest of the CBD, windy pretty much all of the time. So it may not be as cold as Everest, but it can feel as cold as sites in Western Sydney.

EDIT: coldest temp and first sub 7 of the year at OH (minimum 6.1). Looks like Camden, bottoming out at 0.0, was coldest in the Sydney Basin. Bankstown Minimum (3.5) was warmer than the coldest May minimum there (2.4 on the 27th).

EDIT2: I note in passing the consistency of Sydney OH and Mt Boyce minima this morning, 6.1 vs -0.4, pretty much what you would expect from an elevation difference of 1,040 metres alone. I expect that both sites are minimally affected by inversions.

Is the OH comparison site still running? It went about .5-1c colder than the OH site on nights like this. I'd be curious to see if it might have snuck a sub 5c minima in.

This morning's similarities don't end there. Very crowded, as usual, at Wynyard. Just like on Everest.
No bodies though.

Obs Hill, as the name suggests, is on a hill. The ground slopes away on all sides so a ground inversion is a challenging ask.

You have to wonder if Perisher could have gotten lower than -12 this morning. There was a spike in the wind just after that and it would appear some mixing occurred and lifted the temperature.
Charlotte Pass village PWS was -13 an hour later http://www.charlottepass.com.au/weather.html.

Angler's Cold-Chase ~ 20th June, 2019

At my property, a minimum reading of –10.7° C was recorded; heading north-westwards to Providence Portal, the reading was a frigid –14.1° C, by comparison to Perisher Valley's –12.0° C and Cooma AP's –9.1° C; severe frost all around the region, due to very moist air (>95% RH). However, there was a persistent on-and-off breeze during the midnight and foredawn (particularly about Perisher and the upper ranges), thereby halting the temperature from plummeting to its coldest. Minimal wind around here.

Without doubt—it was well and truly cold—but it was also a fizzer due to the interrupting breeze(s).

Those are pretty impressive cold temps AA.

Yes, you can find it on the BOM site under "Climate and past weather", site No 66214. On the coldest mornings so far this year, June 4 and 6, OH dropped 7.5 on both days and the Comparison site dropped to 7.3 and 6.9 respectively.

----

Back of the envelope calculation for Everest.

Latitude 28 deg North, similar distance from the Equator as Brisbane but remote from the sea. If the average climbing season temp is equivalent to, say, 28 degrees at sea level, it would be about 9*6 = 54 degrees cooler near the Summit, so about minus 25 to minus 30. Also pretty windy I expect.

Which would mean about a 0C to 1C low for Katoomba. Exactly where I would have pegged it given the forecast mins for the other locations on the CT's a few days back. Always nice to know you know your own 'Hood'.

In regards to the other forecast I was talking about the other day, I'd be interested to know what the max is in Jindabyne today. After such a cold night down that way, a cold day should see the daily mean come out firmly on the negative side of things. Not too often you get that outside of the Snowies proper.

Low of 6.1 here this morning. Nippy.

OCF going for tonight to be about 1c colder than last for this location, not sure about that if the cloud hangs about.

I like to think that OCF is indicating the cloud will bugger off.
This will give us some clear weather before the next round of miserable gloom arrives for the weekend.

I see this next event just downgrades every run - hoping that this is an artefact of the new model runs still bedding down.

I bracing 8C at my home at 7am this morning, but I live on a hill 200m from Lake Illawarra and <2km from ocean. Car outside temperature dropped to just 6C on flatter areas of Warilla within 1km of ocean.

Coldest so far this year for this close to ocean.

By comparison Albion Park only bottomed at 5C, which is nothing even unusual for that area.
