I recall reading that too. An SMH (?) report from the time listed temperatures, including 120 or 122°F at Jerry's Plains and even a 120 from Windsor...from memory. These were mentioned in a blog article by Jo Nova (but let's not go there).

For whatever reason - maybe not standard equipment, maybe measured on someone's back verandah - these records aren't official. However, the 47.8 at Richmond is the real deal.

I tried looking for the article on Trove but to no avail. I'll check again later.

It is interesting to note that January 1939 was only an average month in Sydney (average max 26.1). The maxima for the four days after the big one were 20.5, 19.3, 19.5, 21.1. That would be regarded as an extraordinary cold spell for mid January now. With only 0.5 mm of rain over the 15th-16th, the 15th would have been a marine layer day. There was 33 mm over the 17th-18th. Given that Brisbane continued in the low to mid 30s, that would have likely been rain delivered by SE winds on the Southern side of a trough over NE NSW.

EC seems to hold the heat back a bit more than the other models and comes through a bit more hard and fast towards the end of the week. Seems wetter post event too.

Whats everyones take for peak coastal temps and what day? Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, or Sat?

What's the highest minimum temperature record for NSW in January? The Borrona Downs site is showing a minimum of 34.6°C for this morning.

I've seen 35.5 for WA/SA as the record for Australia's highest temperature , but haven't seen anywhere which lists NSW's record.

Weatherzone lists NSW's highest minimum as 34.4c for January in Gunnedah in 1905. If the 34.6 stands in Borrona Downs then there's a new state high min record.Definitely possible as the surrounding stations all had mins in the low 30s.

Depends what you mean by coast. I have always maintained that with a NE wind in place my place at 2km inland never really gets past 30-32C. But the same NE wind at Albion Park can see 2-3C more, but rare.

I guess Im asking what day do people feel the seabreeze will be pushed out right on the coast if any.

Or maybe I should ask if the seabreeze will reach Penrith on any of those days?

All the models look a bit different

My reading is that the seabreeze will be active each day except possibly Saturday. There is a weak N-NW General circulation or even N-NE offering little resistance once the sea breeze gets going. Access has a late Southerly with NW'ers possibly reaching the coast. GFS and EC feature an early Southerly Saturday.

EDIT: re Penrith, the sea breeze can reach there, but it tends to be late afternoon if it does and it doesn't greatly affect the maximum.

The seabreeze picking up on the coast, may potentially turn into a sea gale later on.
Tomorrow forecast to be even windier, up to 25kts near the coast toward the evening.

Even here (Macquarie Park), the NE'er is quite brisk, but warm.

Sea temps off Sydney have shot up to 23.65 after a period of being fairly cool. Don't know whether that helps beachgoers where the water might still be cold: Manly Hydraulics Sydney SST. Five or six days of brisk NE'ers might send them tumbling again.

If it wasnt for the seabreeze penrith would probably hit mid to high 40s during the heatwave.

Even a 39km/h gust recorded at Bankstown 20kms away from the ocean. The Seabreeze established itself from about 11 am keeping a lid on temps.

Meteye forecasts 36°, 35° and 35° for Wed, Thur, Friday here. If it comes of it will be truly remarkable. We're talking 3 days in a row of 99.97+ percentile maxima. 36°C here is equivalent to 49°C at sea level.

Gust up to 56kmh at Syd airport. Can't see the coast escaping the seabreeze for this event except maybe Fri, but even then it's not a very strong NW component

The models are now all favouring an early Southerly Saturday, as well as the BOM forecast. Saturday will still be warm and muggy in Sydney until mid to late afternoon.

Until then, it looks like the sea breeze dominates coastal areas.

If Katoomba’s run of 4 days above 35C comes off as per the current BOM forecast, I’m pretty sure it would be a record, not to mention that if Friday’s forecast of 38C is reached, that will be an all time record maximum for Katoomba. Absolutely ridiculous.

Condo has four days in a row of 45C+. Surely that has to be unprecedented. 45, 46, 47, 46 from tomorrow though to Friday.

Plenty of 32°-34° C days in the forecast according to Meteye, but what is more astonishing are the 18°-20° C lows.

Bloody remarkable! Now that's what I call Summer laugh
