why aren't there standard general "heat Warnings" issued by the BoM, similar to flood or severe weather warnings?

DOn't know. I think they have them in the USA. Also the UK (where I think 30 degrees warrants a 'heat warning').

---

Mount Boyce at 1070 metres is on 25 degrees, similar to Sydney sites and equivalent to 32 at sea level.

Sydney's minimum was also 22.5. It's dropped be below 20 only five times in the last month. It's been a while since I've needed a blanket. It is very humid - the NE'er kept going all night.

The forecast for Sydney Olympic Park is 34 degrees with about 50-55% humidity, probably the best indication of what most Sydney people will actually experience today.

The Bureau issues the heatwave forecasts but then warnings based on those are issued (or not issued) by state health departments. SA (and to a lesser extent Victoria) are quite active in this area.

Driving to Kangaroo Island at the moment, currently stopped in Buronga until tomorrow.

Enjoying my morning coffee on the patio as the dry 37c northerly washes over me. cool

Northerly really kicking in here now with a temp of 40.3c!

Few shots from the swimming hole yesterday arvo. There's something special about those deep blue skies against the Aussie bush that gets me every time. I know where I'll be this afternoon. cool

Richmond's 47.8c record will be surpassed at Penrith on Friday if the NWerly wind picks up.

Katoomba on 38c in a dry NWer with no cloud is equivalent to 48c at Penrith as per the dry air lapse rate.

Badgers Creek has just come back on line. Unfortunately at this stage there are no observations since Dec 14.

Sydney's outer West sites (including Badgerys) have reached 36 rounded, with a bit more to go. The Middle Ring is up around 33. OH has probably maxed at 29.

It's very humid. In the outer West, 35 degrees with humidity in the 40s percent as it is now would be much more uncomfortable than a Melbourne or Adelaide 35.

Yeah 36/23 at Penrith. Proper warmth. Edit. Now 37/24.
Just like Summer at my parents in law's place in Gunma prefecture.

There was a boat fire off South Head a while ago. Huge plume of black smoke wafting across the eastern suburbs. Someone's nice day on the water was spoilt.

Warm here, but not terribly hot. Just perfect summer weather really. Can see a bit of Cumulonimbus cloud to my far north west, but otherwise clear.

Just noticed a 40C isotherm at 925mb over Cobar on Thursday according to GFS. I have never seen that in NSW. If that area was at sea level we could get a 50C day, but I think only 48 will be achieved as that area is about 200m above sea level.

Can now see quite a lot of storm development to my west/north west, although nothing is showing on the radar yet. Any chance of storms on the coast?

A thunderstorm has just sprung up in an isolated area between Colo Heights and Putty NW of Sydney. More cells seem to be forming further North.

Penrith and Richmond look to have maxed just short of 40. The wind is actually blowing weakly from the NE there, but it would be mixed in with the hotter air above and the NE'er has crossed a lot of land by the time it gets there. Mount Boyce reached 34.5, equivalent to at least 41.5 at sea level.
