Somehow managed to avoid the power outages from the wind damage tonight.

Walking home into the cooler Southerly Buster from the train station was joyous.

It felt like a new era was dawning.

I'm good again, apartment cooling down. My body cooling down. Sleep beckons. Wind abating now. I am glad the weather pattern was broken. Bring on my birthday next week!

Thanks Homer

Bit fresh this morning, wish I wore a jumper. Smell of drizzle certainly beats the smell of smoke that we have been having of late.

Yeah brilliant stuff there!

I remember we were talking about the 45C in Jan 1939 a few days ago and how the temp dropped all the way to 19 by the next morning. Someone said that those sort of southerlies probably would not happen again. It reached 40 yesterday and currently it's just 18.5 at Obs Hill so they still do happen.

Got a minimum of 17.2 this morning which is the coldest temp since January 4th, even though that temp is bang on average for February. January only had one single below average night. Meanwhile last Jan we got our coldest night on record with 8.6C.

Mins were 3.0 above average (19.9C) and maxes were 2.0 above (28.9)

Will be wearing the jacket to work today I reckon, just 13 up there!!

Here are the numbers for Sydney for January 2019:

Code:
Sydney OH:
Average Max: 29.6 +3.1 Equals record set in 2017
Average Min: 21.7 +2.1 New record
Rainfall: 48.8 mm 51% of average

Sydney Olympic Park:
Average Max: 31.3 +2.6 0.3 short of 2017 record.
Average Min: 21.5 +2.3 New record
Rainfall: Missing data

Bankstown:
Average Max: 32.3 +3.9 New record, +0.5 over old record set in 2017
Average Min: 21.5 +3.3 New record, +1.2 over old record set in 2017
Rainfall: 97.8 mm 107% of average

Richmond:
Average Max: 33.8 +3.5 0.4 short of 2018 record.
Average Min: 21.1 +3.4 New record, +1.1 over old record set in 2017
Rainfall: 121.2 mm 148% of average

For Sydney OH, I compared against 1981-2010 averages
For Olympic Park, I combined old and new sites to get 1996-2018 averages
For Richmond, used the current RAAF site (1994-2018)

So, a hot month, a record in some places, but fairly wet in the West (more thunderstorms). It was a bit cloudier than average, with 7.3 sunshine hours / day compared to an average 7.6. Seven days had little or no sun (< 1 hour).

The old record was 21.6 set in 2017, so this year just pipped it.
For OH, the January average max and min were both the warmest for any month.

For the OH comparison site the averages were 21.4 - 29.6, pretty much the same as the current site.

The comparison site seems to shave a few fractions of a degree off of the min temps, will be interesting on cold winter nights.

Lol I must have misread the article where I thought the next days max temp was around 19 degrees. I definitely agree min temp like this after a hot day are still happening in a decent frequency. I love how southerly buster properly knocked off the humidity as well. I wonder if Jan registered any WGBT records across the basin.

-------
Looks like an above average week for Sydney but the west should see cooler than average or on average temps. With a more easterly flow taking over, a proper change in the pattern.

Big thanks Steve for all the work you put in.

Thank you everyone.

I've always been fascinated by the weather and I am also a bit of a numbers / stats nerd. I'm glad that people find my posts interesting.

A big contrast to yesterday. It's cool (20 degrees), completely overcast with not even the possibility of sun or blue sky. It brightened up a bit in the late morning, but now a fine drizzle has set in.

Locally, many monthly average max records fell as expected.
Tocal, hottest ever month, 35.3C average max. Easily defeats December 1990 which was 33.5C max.
Maitland Airport 35.2C average max. (no long term records)
Cessnock 35.6C average max, defeats Feb 2017 33.6C max.
Scone 37.5C max, defeats Feb 2017 with 35.8C max.
Williamtown 33.3C average max, defeats Jan 2017 31.5C max.
Singleton, disappointingly has been offline and numerous blanks, but would have defeated Feb 2017.

Haven't had the chance to go through maximum temperatures yet at the site level, but of the 24 NSW reporting sites in the long-term data set, 20 had their highest average monthly minimum on record, 1 equalled it, and of the 3 which missed out, 2 (Deniliquin and Port Macquarie) have moved to significantly cooler sites in recent decades. (Yamba's the other one).

My site, at Manilla NSW is on the north-east edge of the zones of maximum temperature anomaly for January, as shown on BoM maps:
http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/awap/temp/inde...d=month&area=ns

Results are:
Max temp anomaly: BoM +6.1; My site +4.6.
Mean temp anomaly: BoM +5.5; My site +4.8.
Min temp anomaly: BoM +4.5; My site +5.2.
https://climatebysurly.com/2019/02/03/january-2019-very-hot/

This is good agreement.
I have interpolated on the BoM maps. I suspect that there are few stations or topographic controls on the mapping near Manilla.
My normal period is from March 1999 to February 2009, not the BoM normal period 1961 to 1990.
