Windy in Hobart right now with a lot of smoke. Wind still coming in from the north-west even though the trough has gone through and temps are cooler, but not by much. I'm guessing the smoke is drifting into the south-east from the Central Plateau

Evening all, another warm day, although not overly hot, reached 26.8 įC about 2pm this afternoon in Brighton, windy again averaging between 40-50 km/h most of the afternoon with gusts topping out at 77 km/h.

No rain in the foreseeable future either, i'm not even sure we have recorded any rain at home for the month.. However will follow up at the end of January.

Still the smell of smoke outside! Everyone in the TFS and all those involved with the fires are doing a great job protecting those at risk! Hats off to them, lets hope we get some better conditions for them in the next couple weeks!

Evening all,
Been out on the fires, the last 2 days down here in the Huon.
Things are not good out there with very dry Bush and plenty of fire in the environment, mixed with properties.
3 houses lost I have heard on Bermuda rd plus TA Ann mill is gone confirmed.
Things looking really bad tomorrow and Wednesday.
My thoughts are this fire will go right over to the Channel.
Hope I am wrong.
Night all.

1967 seems to be on a lot of people's lips right now.

Hobart is over 30 degrees again today, the sixth day this month and an equal record for any month ( with December 1994 ). A record seventh day possible tomorrow.

So not funny any longer , really considering spending Summers back in Cairns. At least it rains every once in a while and don't have to put up with putrid smoke 6 months of the year.

Surely February will be a bit cooler and wetter.

Right?

From my understanding with where the fires are in the Western Arthurs at the moment (hard to find precise data) it looks like there's a chance of light snowfalls over any high altitude firegrounds, assuming the fires are exceeding about 1000m altitude. Interesting combo.

Hopefully the accompanying rain and briefly cooler temps with this front can slow down some of the fires

My fingers are crossed we don't get any gale force NW winds until rains arrive that seriously dent these fires.

Cold smoky and dry in Hobart and 12c.
Looks and smells like a typical winters day years ago when most people had wood fires for heating..

Any snow up on the peaks? I had a look at Mt. Wellington and it appears to be hovering around 2c. Crazy stuff down there.

Pretty big storm down my way last night.
Didn't get much rain out of it, just a sprinkle.

Lots of thunder & lightning though!

Can people confirm that January was the equal driest month for any month for Hobart?

Gotta a hunch a few inland sites will nudge toward a frost tonight. Cressy is a chance, already 11. Low dewpoints, calm and clear skies - unlikely to be foggy. Tip is a min between 2 and 3 at home tonight, Cressy between 1 and 2.

I agree Snowies re frost.
Tunnack has been down to 6 degrees.
Liawenee has been down to 0.7 degree.
Spent the last 4 days on the fires down south,
not a good situation, fingers crossed light winds will allow us to put in fire breaks and complete back burning.
We had 6.4mm for the month.

Can't imagine snow/frost during a bushfire! Tassie in summer is a crazy place.

Liawenee -2.6, Cressy 1.4, Smithton 1.5, we reached 2.5 at home.

Saw a pic from a farmer in the midlands with frost - he was hoping his beans were ok.

I say this with a degree of caution, but there is potential for substantial rain in parts of the state (North and East) on Wed/Thurs - maybe not a NQ style deluge of a meter, but enough to green things up a bit.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel - if current predictions are close to the mark, with widespread rain during the week (Wed/Thurs) and the potential for follow up rain in the western half + cooler weather, the current fire danger could pass reasonably soon.

Hi all,
Good see you about Dave.
Yes we had 46.2mm for the last 2days, very happy with that.
Fires have slowed a lot and more showers to follow. With cooler conditions this may give us the chance to get on top of the fires.
Even the forecast of snow on the higher peaks on Tuesday night.
