Wow, by the looks of the radar you guys in Townsville are experiencing or about to experience the heaviest line of storms so far. It really is incredible the persistent and quite localised nature (for the heaviest of the heaviest rains) of this monsoonal activity.

Crazy weather!

Our Ross River Dam is at 201% (catchment area 750 km˛).

Our Burdekin Dam is at 129.9% (catchment area 114,220 km˛ - England is 130,373 km˛ for comparison)

Total rain in my rain gauge since Australia Day (26/01) is 818 mm, being 2.68 FEET.

Far out!

Well mowing done, shed squared away, and car washed, and washing done. now kick back and watch the cricket.

Nice breeze drying things out, but wasn’t game enough to squirt the weeds.

Doing the same here, SF, two hours water blasting over 1000 slippery black concrete pavers in our atrium, - did think I'd only be doing it after the wet.
Same again tomorrow with pathways maybe if this weather holds up.

Yes Dormant, all you could here this morning was lawn mowers.

Starting to get a few showers flow through now. Moving fast.

What does happen if Tinaroo goes over? I asked a colleague today who has lived here all his life (40 years) and he didn’t know - and good old Google didn’t help.

So far as I can see the weatherzone forecast is at odds with the BOM forecast for Cairns - Sunday. BOM indicating quite a bit 30 - 70mm, WZ 10-20mm

Anyone else have an idea of what might show up?

Getting pumped down here at Mission at the moment. Gone from 3mm at 5pm to up over 70mm. Most of that falling in the last half hour.

Wow sf...it looked like there was a small convergence zone sitting over the top of you for a while....really strange weather ….watching all the carnage around us,particularly to our south but meanwhile we have only been getting between 1 and 2 inches a day for the last 5 days...

Yeah Scott as heavy as I have seen it here. Slowed down to a drizzle now, but you’re right it looked to be generating over the top of us. Up until now our totals have been pretty modest as it seemed to skip around us.

Anyway was rather impressive

SF, you must be getting a decent total by now...?..I'm glad the boy wasn't called into work tonight at Sth Mission...sounds like some streets are flooded and some people have water in their homes and the Pumping station has been overflowing sewerage onto Mariner Drive for more than an hour....How lovely... frown

Which hill are you on Sf...?

Not that one thank god!

If I had to hazard a guess I would say around 275mm. Looks tobe about 2 inches up the outer tube. I has already emptied it.

Very low Mariner Dr end. I am always amazed it doesn’t flood worse than it does.

Over 18 hrs now since any real rain. Backyard is hardly squishy at all now, and has lost the swampy smell too.

Another dry day or two, and I might be able to get the mowerman in.

Hectic fall there SF.

Only 5mm here. But DP is at a now 'normal' level of 25.8c

Yeah was looking at that RH, Sunwater has a 0.8% drop at 8am on their page, but BoM is still showing 3cm under spillway?

Was just about to post that too rawhide. Why such a massive drop. They can't do any big releases. Only has one 500mm outlet to the Barron and two 500mm outlets for irrigation to my knowledge.

Who knows what’s going with the telemetry at Tinaroo. Those sudden drops must be glitches somewhere. Sun water have two gauges at the wall , one is showing 0.03 below the wall the other is showing 0.88 below. In the end it doesn’t really matter, it’s full

Here's some good footage, as you can see currently adds very little to the flow of the Barron. only 25% of the Barron's catchment is above lake Tinaroo.

https://www.facebook.com/jase495/posts/10156289219013721?__xts__[0]

Looks like some more fast moving showers on the way.

Great footage there RF. Thanks for sharing the link. Will take a drive out there today or tomorrow.

Has been a bit wet here. 91mm so far. Would be great to get the allusive 100 before 9am but do not think its possible.

Just on the earth nullschool page.
Looks to be a little low just off the coast on the monsoon trough , that could change things fairly quickly.

The Mareeba Barron river height is still not reporting properly. How does the device work? Is it like a float sliding up and down pole?
Looks like is gets stuck at a certain point but slowly loosens whatever is stopping it each time the river goes up. You can see each time it goes up it can move a little higher before it gets stuck.
Anyways I am sure the council are fully aware and have reported the fault.

I will have to try and get down to the Ville Wednesday/Thursday to help clean up the Old Fellas place. He was lucky, just outside the flood zone, but still had a lot of water through his garage and bottom rooms. He said this morning he could hear the river raging. Not far from Blacks Weir.

Agreed Marakai.
Sun is shinig at the moment. A week or 2 of dry weather would be nice now.
Does anyone know what the wettest 7 day period around Cairns is? Has it ever been as wet as some of areas around Townsville have been?

Just broke my highest DP record again with 27.5c. No wonder I was sweating so much. DP been hovering around 27c all day and zero wind since 11:30am too. Yuk!!

Just had a quick check and compared 7 consecutive rainfall days at Cns airport 902.8mm in 1981 against Tsv airport 1050mm in 2019; Tville blitz Cairns by 147.2mm for title holder over the 2 cities...Great achievement but i'm sure it wont be long till Cairns ups it wink

Townsville aero has the higher 24 hr record 548.8mm in 1998
Cairns Aero record 24hrs 402mm in 1967

Overall Cairns has wetter months and years over Townsville of course smile

Reckon they can keep that record for a while Pac, Imagine all that coming down over the Cairns catchment area on a High tide ?

looks like that low has moved north east a tad to just over Canobie in the Gulf country at the moment, wonder where it will end up, off the coast or ??? .

Thanks for that Pac. Townsville definitley has us beat for the short term totals. Hopefully our region does not beat any of those records while I am here. Hahaha.

3.8mm today. Hopefully things can start to dry out a little before that low starts to head towards us.

The waterfalls on the pyramid have probably not run for so many consecutive days in a good while

If it doesn't rain again in the next 24hrs I will be thinking about applying for drought relief lol

Some things I don't wanna see...

But yes, we're clearing up, ripping out dead veggies, even planting seeds (what a hope!) and pruning the pink bauhinia in the atrium, seems we don't need total shade after all, it sure surged ahead with wet feet.

Can someone tell me why the pressure is so low at 996 when the actual low is so far away?

It's just under 30°, so it's not hot, but with a high RH and DP it is oppresive at times.

Sun water have opened the “left dam crest” of Tinaroo for viewing the spillway. They say the last time it went over the spillway was March 2012

New record again today for highest DP with 27.8c. It was gross. Only 8mm here and very happy that the heavier rain keeps missing me as 8mm is enough to make everything very squelchy again.

My pressure also went down to 995.67hPa today which is by far my lowest since being here. Was thinking I need to re calibrate my base station but if other people recorded low pressure maybe not.

At the moment some water is headed down the Georgina, Dianantina, Thomson/Barcoo rivers, all of which pretty much head to Lake Eyre.

The headwaters of the Darling River system start in south eastern Queensland & NE NSW west of the Great Dividing Range.

I believe most of the rivers west of the Great Dividing Range in northern Queensland feed the Diamantina & Georgina rivers which empty into Lake Eyre given enough rainfall.

We had maybe an hour of real proper sunshine late this morning. But the rain has just come back.

Whaddya think that low will do? Will it continue to sit there or follow me over to Cairns tomorrow morning as Windy would have it do?

I like it where it is. I want another month of this weather at least, even if I start sprouting mushrooms.

To mourn the passing of the rain, as one should in a dry continent smile its always dry soon enough but you can never be sure when the wet will come back

A dry period now for a little while, maybe some showers this afternoon

DId the banana crops get affected by the floods? I ask as my local Woolworths has bumped up the price to $4.90 a kg, IGA TO $5.70 and the local vege shop to $5.95 a kg. Seems expensive for this time of year.

4.8mm overnight. Once this low goes it looks like it will be mostly dry for at least a couple of weeks. Most likely we will not see anything significant till the end of the month maybe even till March.
Not going to lie, I am happy with a few weeks reprieve. The rain that falls now really is doing nothing. Dams full, creeks and rivers flushed.

61% to go in excess water volumes, should lower faster as levels get closer to 100%, Then we have a safe storage volume for the Ross Dam. So looking forward to some hot sunny days.

Another 40mm in the past 24hrs, that makes 21 days straight with rain, and only 9 rain free days this year.

Did not get my wish for no more rain. About to tick over to 30mm. Meteye was only forecasting 0-8mm at my location for today.
Mareeba TM gauge is on 33mm from an earlier storm. Should be ~40mm on the 10pm update.

Looks like it will be a very wet night

Call me crazy but disappointed we didn't get more rain out of the convergence/low which BOM was harping on about on the radio Thursday which could possibly deliver 100mm or more to Cairns region; models stated otherwise though.

I wonder if Cairns airport 1042.4mm will end up passing Townsville's total so far of 1,421.4mm for 2019?

Wish I could have given you mine Pac, nearly 40mm here. Mareeba alert got 49mm.
Some other good falls around with Flaggy Creek being the highest with 76mm.

GFS going with some stormy weather this afternoon with falls ~30mm. EC saying 2mm. Hoping EC is on the money though GFS was closer yesterday.

Me too. I love this weather. Perfect temperature perfect humidity. I like it humid. I'd love another 2 or 3 months of this.

11mm since 2.30pm yesterday when I got home.

A couple flashes and a really loud close crack of thunder yesterday evening, mostly sprinkling on and off 24/7.

McLeod river was 1.8-2 mt this morning cutting the highway north to Cook Town but dropped back a bit through the day to 1.2 ish probably be back up again now though witgh the recent rain passing through. Bushy Creek at Julatten was up to .5 over night but is apparently open again now, we just got in and out to pick the Kids up yesterday arvo as the local Copper closed it about 4.30 pm yesterday arvo came up from .175 on the way in and .350 on the way out over about 30 40 minutes.

I was hoping to be able to listen to the rain on the roof all night, last night. Such a relaxing sound.

Started looking good a bit before 21:00h, but then only about 17mm for the next 10 hours. 25mm all up.

Yeah M8, we need some sunshine for a week or so to get the grass going at least if not just to dry out a little bit, we've got a foot of water flowing in some areas of our paddocks. Even got a bit of mould going on around the place over the last few days... mostly in the teenage girls clothes draws though so not sure what to blame that on.

yes marakai..some sunny days will be most welcome....nobody likes a mouldy merkin…

Got the ride-on bogged a few times today before I gave up...the rest can wait..

It wont take too many 37c days to start drying out though...Cairns is only forecast for 35c tomorrow...wonder why we are a couple of degrees above that..?...

Its hard to believe that we have had so much damage from natural disasters in the north and Tully didn't feature at all.... sigh of relief but feel for all the poor bugga's that got water through their homes down in the 'ville and particularly all the farmers that persevered through years of drought only to have been devastated from the outback flooding....all the stock losses and fences and infrastructure ….cruel world..!

A day or 2 of sun would be nice, but I'd still rather have more rain. The creek is running, but dams out this way are still not full. Our water table might have a bit more in it, but it still won't be near enough.

And... here's tonight's sky

LMAO Awww.... Damn Scott you just made me spit Mohito all over my my lap top M8 with that Mouldy Merkin comment.

On a more serious note though.
Have to agree though with your comment about those poor bastards that have suffered for years with drought and then getting hammered like this with ridiculous floods wiping out whats left of what they have struggled to preserve by hand feeding over the last few years... absolutely tragic circumstances that they face right now.
Just can't Imagine struggling for so long waiting on rain... and then this happens.

Well apparently you're the man with the merkin, marakai….I'd never even heard of the damn things till you educated us... wink grin

I'd say there would have been quite a few farms out there that were just trying to hang onto what breeding stock they could, till they got a decent season and some feed growing...bad enough not being able to fatten cattle for market but even worse now to lose your breeders...its a tough game..I couldn't do it...

Hey merkin....marakai... I can live with that.:) least I edufacated a few of you all about genital wigs... god knows, at least half the population needs one now days apparently , especially in winter. How else are they keeping their googlies warm in winter ?

Know a few people who have already lost a large portion of their stock that had already sold off everything but their main breeders. Now they are just holding their breathe to see what is left once they can get out and see what is left.
Going to take a lot for many people to get back on top after this has all finished. Years of struggle with drought... and then over a couple of weeks when the rain does arrive it screws them like never before.

People who have never cared for livestock before just can't understand what it feels like to see your whole meaning in life destroyed by a massive change in the weather that you were actually hoping for.

Year after year of spending day after day of keeping their stock alive by hand, feeding them while watching many stock die due to dry conditions and then over a couple of weeks watching as many of them drowned or the very soil they stood on turn to slop and trap them in place because they are too weak to move... just as the rain is about to turn their country into a field of green not seen for over two decades.

It takes a very strong character to survive and make it through such events... But that is what Aussies are I guess.

My heart really goes out to all the people affected by flooding but especially the farmers. Hopefully they have a few easy years now to help them recover and restock.

All the rain missed my place yesterday so very happy. Only 2mm. Looking forward to this week of sunny dry weather.
This has definitely been the longest period I have witnessed with out really seeing the sun. Mareeba will not have its 300 sunny says this years.

Imagine how fast the grass is going to grow. It has been relatively slow growing over the last 3 weeks. I mowed the day before the rain arrived and it only just needs a mow now. It usually needs mowing every week at this time of year.

There has been a lot less storms this year too. End of January through February is usually very active up here. I go away for 2 weeks from the 18th so there should be plenty of storms around then.

She is a warm one. Currently 36.3c but luckily the DP has dropped back to 22c now though it was sitting at 27.5c till around 1pm.
Really hope those cells don't make it as the lake out front is finally shrinking.

Indeed Simmo, our temps here didn't peak until almost 2.45pm when it reached 39.5'c.

Cold@28 would have thought your temps to be higher though it appears the coastal fringe have really copped the brunt of this heat.

Cairns Airport peaked at 37.5'c

Would love to go for a swim right now in the creeks to cool the bodies core temperature down a bit!

After a quick calculation, today was our hottest day since the 18th Dec. (54 days).

And just had a nice little storm to cool it down nearly 4 degrees.

That was at 2.30pm, which is usually the hottest part of the day, then it starts to cool off.

Think I might have to water some of the plants in my food plot though. Have a rampant pumpkin vine stretching through the yard. Took off with the prolongued rainy weather - it will probably die of shock after a few more days with no rain. Leaves looked a bit wilted.

Not sure of actual temp here but she was HOT. I did 10km walk thismorning then spent some time out in a boat, I am now various shades of red all over, despite using 50+ sunscreen.
Hoping the storm makes it all the way up here, even just for the cool downdraught.

GFS going for a stormy weekend for the last few runs now with falls 50-70mm on the tablelands. EC not so keen with falls of 10-15mm.

Not sure if the ground would have dried out enough for some heavy storms. The lake out the front will hopefully go today but if we get a good fall so soon it will be back. The mosquito population is exploding and most other insect populations will probably explode with this heat speeding up the larval stage.

The evening storms were good, temp went down and humidity up a notch, the rain was welcome. I suspect its more of the same for the next week or so, late storms each day?

Hi all,

I just returned from almost a fortnight in Bali. I had a cock up with flights, and ended up coming home via Adelaide and Melbourne. Gah! So, I got into Cairns yesterday at 4pm, took the doggo for a walk at yorkies and got absolutely soaked. Then got home to no power. After 2 days of travel and junk food, I are crackers and hummus for dinner haha.

Then, no fans, no aircon, no nothing, I tried to sleep...not a great night sleep to be honest. Power came back on at 2am.

So I missed all the news. I know TSV flooded but I read / saw no details (I made concerted effort to disconnect whilst away). Were records broken? It sounded pretty bad. I guess they got what we had for a few days, I wonder if they have the same good drainage that we have?

Anyways, day of laundry and nappy. The heat is feral. In contrast, Bali forecast storms every day but only had two lasting an hour each. Bali was cool and windy for most of it.

It was much, much worse than that. Most places had 1500-2000mm in 9 days.

Nothing in the gauge today so looks like the rainy day streak is at an end. 19 consecutive days all up!!

Maxed at 36.5c yesterday but the DP dropped to 20-22 all day so not too sweaty. Should be hotter today.

It was much, much worse than that. Most places had 1500-2000mm in 9 days.

Disconnected or not, half a minute of reasearch would show you what happened. Guess that comes with being ignorant. I had 1603mm in 10 days including 4x200mm plus daily falls and another falling 4mm short of 200.

Boy o boy! The bloody mould!

😂😂😂 got the whole week planned out...., cleaning mould😢

Did I mention my distaste for hot humid weather? It is a real battle between my hatred for this weather and my out and out hatred for the cost of electricity.

The battle continues......

Hey DU, don't take the comments personally, people have been through a lot in and around Townsville. The rainfall and resulting floods were devastating.
They were much wetter than Cairns has ever experienced in a 9 day period. The ross dam nearly reached 250%. Over 2,000 homes were flooded. A lot of records were broken.
If you have a look online you will find plenty of footage showing the extent of the flooding.

Out West has also been devastated by flooding with a terrible amount of livestock dead and farmers lives completely ruined. The photos and videos showing up on social media shows the horrific loss they are going through. It is an incredibly hard time for a lot of people.

Yes reports of up to half a million stock lost Simmo, that's just, woah..

Sounded like perfectly reasonable question DU, no need to "Pull ya head in"

Looks like hot and dry for a while now. Returned from 4 days off yesterday to 36mm.

Wow @ the attacks on Drivenunder.

What Ronfishes said ! He only asked a question and oddly enough he did so in a weather forum. What happened in Townsville is not his fault.

Cloudless sky this afternoon and evening, although there was the faintest pink vapour in the west just before light disappeared.

Back to watering the "food plot", and the 3 new trees I planted, battling the mossies in the shade of the afternoon.

Valid question DU. If you've been out of contact for a period of time it's understandable. I don't have TV, so most of what I know was only prompted by twitter videos and links, and the fact that we got rain almost every day here in Chillagoe, and I have more time on my hands than I know what to do with.

December gave us 146mm
January gave us a whopping 321mm
and the first 10 days of February made 156mm

Some wet seasons here didn't even make it to 300mm.

Dawwg and gazz the same person ??? Both of them should pull their heads in in any case, uncalled for and out of line. Yeah people are hurting, but it was an innocent question guys.

Meantime we have a mosquito plague of biblical proportions up this way, literally millions of the little suckers the likes we have never seen over the last 27 years here, had an interesting little localized thunderstorm build over the range behind us the other night over Spurgeon and Carbine that just sat and boomed away for hours while all was dead still down here in the valley... The star's were chrystal clear right over us but you could see the cloud towers lit up by the lightning a mere few kilometers away and hear the near instant crackle and boom of the lightning... was quite surreal.

Grass is growing at a phenomenal rate now with the sun out but so are the weeds, so been running the spray tank all over the place to try and keep on top of the nasty's... Still running on tank water for now and probably will be until well into the dry at this rate.

Still fairly early in the season yet for us all...Fingers crossed any where south of Cairns who got hit with the worst doesn't cop anything else for the rest of the wet season.

Maxed at 35.7c yesterday. DP was below 15c all day and dropped right down to 9.4c. Was great mowing weather.
Min temp was 19.9c this morning. It was chilly.

Another Hot one here today marking 4th day @ 39'c with 39.6'c.

I'm just in awe at this weather, extreme heat followed by prolonged rain and back to extreme heat again. I've never seen anything like this in Cairns before and neither have my Grands who were born here too.

This round of heat has been nice, not too hot, the nights are pleasant also. Last few nights you might even say cool, as we had to resort to getting under the sheets.

This morning the breeze was like a sauna.

36.8 degrees
41% humidity
Lovely big white clouds to the east and northish.

This is the hottest part of the day, can only look forward to cooler.
Last two nights were around 28 degrees, reasonably warmish.
The pumpkin vine is looking sad, after tearing down the block in the rain and cloudy weather.

Sunny and hot again though RF.

Sitting here listening to the distant rumbles. Knew there would be storms about even though the forecast did not mention them, it just had that feel, and the look pretty decent too.

The wind is in a battle as to which direction it will come from. It is west then east then north then west again and everything in between, basically leaving it dead calm most the time.

Had a storm skirt past here, was heaven! Blew all the hot air out of the house and the temp dropped by 8 degrees in 20 minutes. It's about 30 now and it feels so good smile Happy me can do some sewing!

It has just started to rain. Sounds good. Frog just started croaking...he's happy. Neighbour's cat has disappeared, he gets terrified. Usually comes inside.

Three guinea fowl sheltering under my young lemon tree. And I can't hear the rain any more. It's a whiteout though. Weird.

Geez, that's hot for Cairns Pacman.

Doesn't take long to dry the ground out in the north.

I think the rain has stopped properly. Better go look at the gauge.

....Grand total of 3mm.

Well that's 3mm better than we did on the coast. 3mm is 3mm,-every little bit adds up.

I think Marakai may have got a few more mm out of it.

Yes, definitely better than nothing, and 10 degrees cooler, even the house is cool again now. Everything is fresh. The pumpkin vine has revived.

Has that storm feel again today. A lot more so than yesterday it feels like it could dump at any moment. Also some serious haze out there.

34.5 degrees already at 9.45am
48% humidity

The sky is weird.
Not a cloud in the sky - it's a complete whiteout of haze.
Not a scrap of blue anywhere.

Haven't seen it like this here before.

Temperature's dropped from 38 at 2.15pm to just over 32 degrees 3.30pm.

Cool breeze is very nice.

Big puffy clouds all around us, still strangely overlaid with white haze, as are the bits of blue sky overlaid also.

Don't know whether you can see if very well, but here's a couple photos.

Beautifull day! We drove from home out to Wondecla to see a horse. My first time to Atherton and beyond - sure is beautiful up that way smile Stopped at Mt Hypipamee to look at the crater on the way home, very impressive.
Enjoying the cooler temp today greatly.

Do you have a Nylex pro for accurate records, or only the WS, Simmo ??

How often does the coast get 40 degrees? I thought it was more like 32-37ish.

The radar should not be devoid of rain, and the pressure map should be full of lows for the SW Pacific region -- shouldn't it???

We're not doing too badly out here, considering.
Better January results, and already reached February totals and only half way through the month.

Hoping for another 3mm this afternoon.

Well there ya go...the missus must be right...I can barely remember what she said yesterday according to her......!... wink

2016 was the end of a 5 year well below average rainfall period for us.. 150mm for feb that year..!.this place just never ceases to amaze me....Damn...who would want to be a BOM weather forecaster..?

and 28 if we got 40c next week it would be an all time record for Feb...fortunately the forecast has now been lowered to 39c...oh so much better...

Not looking forward to 39 degrees, although 38 the other day wasn't as bad as it could've been. :-/

Wooeee we just had a nice little storm. Bit blowy, gorgeous storm light, but no thunder/lightning. Blew the lid of a compost bin, not that it was on very well.

11mm.....which is much better than 3mm.

I'm still wondering if I should go out and get wet in the rain and water my plants, since even yesterday's 11mm didn't get them comfortably through today. And it was only about 34 degrees.

You got any humus in that soil of yours out there C28 ? If not get some horse dung into your garden beds or some cow dung with a bit of dolomite mixed in as well, that will help your soil hold some moisture.

As marakai said c@28. Sounds like you need to build your soil up. When you plants are wilting dig down in the soil a little to see if it is damp. A lot of vegetable plants like pumpkins will naturally wilt in full sun during summer. I have made the mistake before of thinking that if my plants are wilting they need water. Killed some from over watering.

Off to Adelaide for 2 weeks now. Looking forward to no humidity for a little while though in 2 weeks time my skin will look like a snake ready to shed.
Also looks like nothing much will happen weatherwise up here while I am away, unless Oma does was EC is saying and starts heading up the coast. Even so, nothing much will happen for at least 10 days or so. I just hope we get enough showers to keep things growing

Hi cold@28, if you're soil is all potting mix, then if it's gone dry at any stage, it can be really difficult to rewet. I would suggest putting some soil wetting agent on the soil which should help the water penetrate the mix.

Years ago, I dunked some pots which contained very dry potting mix in them in a bucket of water & all the potting mix came floating out of the pots. I repeated the exercise with some Wettasoil in the water and all the mix got soaked through. Until then I didn't believe in soil wetting agents.

You can get the wetting agents either in liquid form or granular form. Hope this helps.

Sure is dry here Werner. Always a shock when I come from FNQ to SA at this time of year. Is pretty chilly here though. Glad I bought my trackies and hoodie.

Gotta admire a bit of public service double speak some times

In response to criticism about the Mount Isa BOM office closing, the spokesperson said the office was not closed, but automated.

"In 2016 the Bureau of Meteorology automated its remote weather station at Mount Isa," the spokesperson said.

"The automation of the Mount Isa weather station has allowed for an increase in the quantity, quality, and availability of weather observations, improving both the forecasting and warning services provided to the community."

As long as it’s got reasonably vertical sides, the depth of the water in mm is how many mm you got

Can't complain at 2mm and huge drop in temperature. By 2pm today partner and I were feeling distinctly unwell - not weather for oldies w/o a/c but we manage...somehow.

Toss up between whether it's green and I pay for mowing too often, or bleak beige and no expenses. It's a sticky wade thru the paspalum on the way to the rain gauge, which thankfully sometimes has something in it, and makes it worthwhile.

Seeing a bit of lightning in those clouds now.

Bit coming up from the south in a few minutes, hopefully we'll get at least 5mm, but hope for more.

Looks like yours is on the way C@28, we had some ripper lightning this arvo, over 25mm in the gauge over an hour or so and round two on the way at the moment.

Came home to 42mm in the guage. I was watching the radar from CBD and could see the nice blob of yellow/red hit the beaches. Know doubt would have been more a bit further north. Would love to know how Port Douglas fared with the big blob that went their way.

Fingers crossed, everything crossed. I've seen blobs that look like that part around us...

I think we're only getting the white bits of that blob.

Edit: Now we're getting a bit of the blue, nice.

Nearly 2.5 hrs without power this arvo as lighting knocked out power in this vicinity.
Just looking outside when it hit,- I thought a bomb went off. Rattled the joint a bit.
22.2mm from the storm.

We had some real sphincter squeezing moments here with a few very close strikes right over us, the light and ripping sound were near instantaneous.

I drove past the Mobil at Yorkeys Knob, it looked like the big sign out front was hit? With a large tree next to it in pieces. Didn't look like wind damage, it looked like a lightning hit...

Can only imagine this will fuel tomorrows high temp to reach 38c early at airport. Suburbs might even break 40c again for the second time this month.

The temp is never too much of a problem on the beaches, it's the hot westerlies I can do without.
A nice 15kt Sth Easterly is the go. Straight in through the back sliding door and windows, and out the front ones. May be back to S.E. flow by Fri arvo.

Gusty here now but not too bad in the night. Didn't drop below 33 inside or out last night, I got up and opened the front and back doors to at least get the air moving, then had a 2am shower to cool off abit, helped me get back to sleep.

Wish my house was all Feng Shui and all so it can let the breezes through, unfortunately the developer didn't have the elements mind with most homes here blocking the SE breeze, capturing the westerlies and becoming heat boxes which need aircon to cope with the conditions... bring back the old Qlder design!!

A few small clouds, and a slight haze in the distance.

Last night around midnight it was 28, so not that hot.

Well its certainly a lovely afternoon on the Cassowary coast as well..

Thankfully its cooled off a bit from the 40.4c registered at Sth Johnstone mid afternoon...

Only 39c showing on the Thermometer here now...

At Sth Johnstone, if that 40.4c is correct it seems not only is it our highest recorded February temp but also equal with the highest recorded for any month along with 29th Dembember 1971....edit so I see it hit 40.5c so I guess hottest ever day officially recorded...

We have a couple of Canadians staying with us this week....when they left home a couple weeks ago they tell me it had been down to -40c ….that's quite a temperature differential...they sure do like to immerse themselves in our creek here...

I saw it hit 40.8 at one stage during the afternoon. Funny thing is, even how hot it is, the area out the back still has that wet creek (mud) smell to it, and it is still quite wet on the surface.

I love it here but I really really really miss having rain.
Don't think I've ever complained about Chillagoe itself, just the lack of rain since Yasi. This has been a good wet season so far.

Finding it strange, though, that our daytime temps are well below the coast.

I must say, one good thing about this last round of heat,is that it has knocked the Mozzie population around, same for the sand flies.
There was stacks of them around not long after the last lot of rain.

Yeah I'm hearing you mate...Fortunately those annoying little knats/midgies/sandflies only lasted a few days and then the mozzies came to visit for a few days at the beginning of this week but they are gone now too thankfully.....

Nice day today but the SE breezes and showers are forecast to pick up during next week...must be the remnants of Oma coming to visit, is it...?..A bit of rain and stormage will be most welcome after this hell week..

47.4mm since midnight.
Nice change from the westerlies of late.

It's like an early autumn day out here. Very comfortable, odd gusty breezes mixed with gentle ones. Sometimes it's overcast, sometimes it's not.

Today's rain was a fair whack more than forecast.
4.4 mm to 09:00 and another 82.4 mm when I checked at 16:00.

Anymore tonight and I'll have to put the mower man off for a day or two. Backyard has gone back to being squishy again.

Very brief shower moving quickly past dropped 2mm, which is just enough to cool things a little.

After emptying 58mm this morning and nothing all day, it's saving the plants by showering again. Glad to see.

22mm overnight and 735mm for the month of Feb.

Doesn’t look like too much is going to happen in the foreseable future, so let’s hope temps stay low.
