It's sunny and humid here, a rerun of yesterday, although not quite as warm as this time yesterday. There's a bit of high cloud about, with a cloud bank off to the South.

About 25-27 across Sydney, with the NE-er trying to get going.Sea temps off Sydney are still cool, a little over 21, having recovered from just above 20 a couple of days ago. The boundary of the cold water, about 20 km off the coast, shows up clearly of 'Layers' (enhanced infrared).

Mentioned a few days ago that this is the most humid summer I can recall. At home (no AC) I went to print a page on the ink jet and had a paper jam. Took me a while to work out as the paper was just not being picked up. It had swelled under the conditions of the last few weeks, and each page against the other did not slip. I had to feed the printer single page by page.

It really depends where it falls though there are some fast flowing rivers around the Mid-north Coast and adjacent areas along with rainforest. They may be reasonably well-versed. But then Lismore which is prone to flooding will be inundated.

Dropping it inland is a tricky one because the geography is poor for a fast removal of water, but then soil moisture is a record lows or well below average along with many dams and rivers like the darling struggling to flow so an interesting battle.

Drop it further South on Sydney it's like the 5th of August 1986 multiplied by a factor of 5 so I would leave it up to imagination. Note: That event saw 327.8mm in a period of 24 hours, absolutely insane.

Looking into the Illawarra looks like it would've surpassed the 1998 August floods so quite eerie thinking about it. The monthly rainfall of August in 1998 was Kiama 728mm and Darkes Forest 744mm so more than double that. Don't know much too much about it though not a local, but I found an excellent write-up by Ozthunder.
Ozthunder Diary 1998

I would imagine that every dam would be filled if you look on the bright side though. Again i've not been alive for the comparable events that may be sitting around.

I could see some distant towers away to the West when I was out and about earlier. There's a chain of cells over the Divide West of Sydney. They seem to be moving slowly Northwards. There's another cell South of Putty and a small cell just passed between Campbelltown and Waterfall, probably the source of the thunder Chapo heard.

We'll see what develops.

EDIT: no sign of any "Southerly" as such. Winds are N-NE on the Illawarra, more E-SE South of about Moruya.

For the second day in a row here - storms to the north, south, east and west, but nothing overhead. Seems to have been the theme here this summer. We only got 82mm in January (below average), while 154mm in Bathurst, 171mm at Bathurst Airport and 183mm at Mt Boyce were all well above. You can see how much greener it becomes when you drive down the hill to Hartley. Normally it's the other way around - it becomes browner and drier in the Kanimbla Valley.

58.7 mm this past January—about average. The usual dry summer.

Winter is always much wetter here (>120 mm), which is chiefly due to snowfall.

Awesome lightning from 8 - 10 pm last night around bungendore near Canberra. I’ll post a video when I can edit it. Shelf cloud pumping out bolts that were 10 km away at first but slowly closed in to 2 km away, not too much rain either. Michael (pingtang) was also in the area so keep an eye out for his video.

Lightning at night is the best because when filming it with a good high frame rate camera, you can see the return strokes much more clearly than during the day.

The minimum temperatures around the Sydney basin this morning were between 23°C-24°C with Observatory Hill and the airport at around 22.5°C. So the Western suburbs had higher mins than the Eastern suburbs this morning which is very unusual.

I noticed that too. I'd say that's a result of sea breezes continuing well into the evening, followed by a weak Southerly, possibly boosted by cool inshore Oceans.

It's been cloudy with a brisk Southerly (10-15 knots earlier, now dropping). The Sun's tried to break through a few times and is trying again now, urged on by the cicadas. It's about 25 near the coast, up to 27-28 inland.

Has also been pretty consistently warmer for mins here vs Bellambi as well. And yes it is usually the opposite way around in this area too with the average min being 17°C. Last night was well over 20 but not uncomfortable because the days have been fairly cloudy and not that hot so the house hasn't heated up much since the big southerly change.

It's cloudy today but still rather warm and muggy. We had light rain hanging around for a couple of hours just before but it has cleared now.

This summer reminds me of 2017 for minimum temps. Only rarely dropping below 20, which is quite different from last year when some short term sites had record low January temps (10c). Just hasn't been much of an opportunity to escape the warmth.

Southerly is blowing now in Sydney.

Models showing some heat and then a cool down next Tuesday and Wednesday, with the change coming Thursday. Only a small amount of rain. Access, EC and GFS mostly in agreement at this stage.
