Feb 2005 is stuck in my mind! The local park turned into a rather large dam.

Petros, the main reason for that is there are so many more members now on the forum, a huge number really. This forum has become extremely popular as more people take an interest in the weather and climate. Amongst these members are people with a wide range of knowledge from experts to novices and interested in the weather for a wide number of reasons and on a large number of levels.

Really, the only people responsible for keeping a record of historical weather events are the trained professionals working for the BOM as part of the federal government of the Commonwealth of Australia, they are paid for it and it is their job. Internet forums are a lot more low key particularly when they are completely open and unrestricted to the public.

Well Melbourne weather at its best today.Cool and sunny and very beautiful. At work in the garden in Toorak everything already looks so much better than last week.Nothing like heavy rain to perk up the plants.
I went plant shopping at Olinda today and it was cold and low cloud around lunchtime.People up there said they had over 100mm on the weekend and it sure looks green and beautiful.

I still can't believe that rain we had in Melbourne! I was this close to giving up hope.

Yes, a perfect Melbourne day, If it was mid September! smile

After a cool and cloudy start, the sun broke through the clouds to a mostly sunny afternoon. Made the day feel nice and warm but as the temps show, it was still quite a few degrees below average. Mind you it is great to see water everywhere, there were puddles on the roads this morning, dry creek beds on the way to Tarneit had water in them, and the water in Kororoit creek is higher than I have seen for a while.

Well, we're currently running on November average max temps for December after the first half of the month, so mild temps basically, one day above 30C, 2 days above 25C and 6 days below 20C. Really a godsend when you consider temps over the last few years in particular. Remember March this year, (how can we ever forget) so it is nice to see things balancing out a little.

This event to me was half of 05 I had 79mm this time around 05 I had around 140mm so thats about right be similar in alot of places in Melbourne roughly half the figures of 05

I am glad we have finally gotten a decent rain event...mind you I spent the whole weekend down at Torquay! not the greatest beach weather...Hope for some more rain to come soon! but also hope the temps increase slightly more by about 3-5 degrees...so instead of a week in the low 20's a week in the mid to high 20's...just to take the chill off cause in my opnion that is only the negative of decent rain events the cold! I feel it too easily LOL smile

Plant life here has gone berserk today, people have been out frantically mowing their lawns this evening, looking really green here now.

Even the paddocks around Gisborne/Riddells Creek/Sunbury etc. are showing the slightest tinge of green now in amongst the yellow.

Essendon Apt temps average December Min and Max compared last year to this year so far......

2007: Min 13.9 Max 26.7c
2008 so far: Min 11.1 Max 21.9c

Melbourne Apt 2007: Min 13.7 Max 26.3c
2008 so far: Min 10.4c Max 21.9c

Laverton 2007: Min 13.7c Max 26.2c
2008 so far: Min 10.9c Max 21.8c

This is a better indication of the REAL differance of what temps are this year and the differance so far to last year instead of comparing the CBD as the Heat island has more of a moderating effect with the temp and the differance isn't as strong. And as we can see there is 4-5c differance with the Maximum temps compared to last December so far which is a HUGE differance, the minimum is also a good 3c or so the differance.

I tell you what John, I wouldn't mind a few 25-30c days, as long as we keep getting follow up rain. The cool days are finally getting to me and some nights have been so cold for summer. Maybe this is actually the beginning of the drought breaking cycle which has been going for so many years now. I suppose we wont find out for another 12 months though. Crossing fingers, it's going to be a long wait confused

well another cool day, but I think alot more humid. There was some sun this morning which gave a little bit of warmth to the air, but as the clouds got thicker, the air felt cooler but still humid. Also there was some drizzle during the day but that all cleared to humid overcast weather.

Caroline Springs: Min: 11.3 Max:20.7
Melbourne: Min: 13.0 Max:19.9

went for a walk this morning up the Moonee Ponds creek and it was flowing nicely. Would like to see it used as a wetlands system with water grasses and breeding sections for birds. The water would also be purified by this system. It all seemed like a concrete channel and the polluted runoff water would only spill out to the Bay. Makes no sense to me.

Back in Adelaide the Salisbury council made made a bold decision to water proof themselves about a decade ago, with a wetland system where the water was naturally purified, and was used to fill up natural aquifers.

So when it does rain here, all the water goes to waste.

I am not sure what happened with the weather today. With the cloud cover the weather felt very humid. And then when the sun came out almost felt quite hot! But looking at official temps, was only about 20c. I just don't get it!

Anyway as I have just said, cloudy and humid but dry.

Caroline Springs Min:13.1 Max:20.2
Melbourne Min:13.7 Max:21.3

Oh well another cool humid and mostly cloudy day. Again when the sun came out the humidity in the air made it feel warmer than what it really was. There must have been some rain this morning down Werribee way because I left home with dry roads but got to tarneit in almost flood conditions! Roads were amazingly wet even some deep puddles on the road.
There was a shower this afternoon down there when I left but again dry conditions here. Mind you I can see some amazingly dark clouds just to my north which seems to be a storm in the Sunbury area. Pity I don't work there anymore, would have been great to see what it was like!

Caroline Springs Min: 13.7 Max:20.5
Melbourne Min:14.1 Max: 20.3

Hey I was just thinking, with this rain that seems to be missing me, where do people think would be the driest part of metropolitan melbourne? I know we have official sites and we could say one of those, but unofficially I would think it would be somewhere between Werribee and Rockbank? What do you guys think?

I'd probably go as far North as Diggers Rest, and West to Melton.

I would have thought Diggers rest and Melton with slightly higher would therefore have slightly higher rainfall.
