I'll be looking around this side of the planet for typhoons and cyclones of interest, so I'll dump them all in here I think.

Super Typhoon Wutip has been swirling around in the northern hemisphere for the last few days. It had a very clear eye last night but it seems to be weakening a little now. It's had an interesting core structure during this time. I wouldn't like to be in it. Best seen from far away.

644nm single band, Himawaricast from Jcsat2B. Received with a 2.3m solid dish and Novra S300D DVB-S2 satellite receiver.

Cyclone Pola near Fiji has arrived. Has an unusual feature of a vertical rift running through it. Quite bizarre.

Hey Learjet - Wutip had a similar feature on the pic you posted above (albeit it was more circular and wrapping into the typhoon)? Could it be a receiver error?

I was thinking of that, but it appears on images all through last night up until about 8am this morning where it fades out on both internet and satellite versions. I think it might be a real feature.

I've found images where this rift is present on NASA worldview (different satellite) so it's a real thing, whatever it is.

I contacted the BOM about the rift feature from cyclone Pola above. I'll paste their comment here.

"Our meteorologists reckon it's some type of 'soliton' or solitary wave—possibly an 'undular bore'. These can be triggered when a gravity current (e.g. convective outflow) impinges on a low-level stable layer. Downdraughts and cold pools are mostly weak with a developing cyclone (due to moist mid-levels), but on the periphery of the main circulation there could be some drier mid-level air. Cool sea-surface temperatures just to the east of the main Fiji islands might provide the stable layer."

Fascinating, thanks! Bizarre that they are so linear though.

Love your photos Learjet. They supersonically beautiful from up there.
What does our little faded ExOma looking like? She is about 600kms WNW of Cairns - a little blob but she is moving back towards Qld as if she wants to visit us again.
Apart from the massive damaging rains she dumped, she also caused a ship to be grounded on a World Heritage reef on Rennell Island, Solomon Islands while collecting bauxite ore and has spilt up to 75 tonnes of oil.
Bad Oma.

Thanks Kowee. Another Haleh first but I noticed some rotation where Oma might be. I'll have a look and check back.

I'm not sure if this is ex Oma or another low. Just above and to the right of center. It's rotating, whatever it is.

Yes Learjet, that is ExOma and my big bad on last post. It was about 1200 kms ENE of Cairns (I'm blaming a mild hiccup in my health on that stuff up!).
Now it is approx 950 kms ENE of Cairns but doesn't look as neat as yesterday.
I am a very amateur weather watcher!
